Amazon.com Product Description

The JBL On Stage 400ID loudspeaker dock is a complete sound system for iPod--one that will become the new centerpoint of your personal entertainment space. Imagine a total audio system in one place, with no extra wires running across your table or desk. Connected to your iPod, MP3 player, or other music source, the JBL On Stage 400ID system produces clean, powerful sound, letting you take complete control of your music.

A total audio system in one place, with no extra wires running across your table or desk.

Combines many proprietary technologies for the highest quality sound, offering astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction.

Compatible with dockable versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPod nano 3G, and iPod classic 6G.

Which Dock Is for You?
JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are:

For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies
The iPhone owner--if you can stand to put the thing down--has a couple choices. The On Stage IIIP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the On Stage 200ID gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well.

For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers
Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons, more lights. Others just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. If this is you, then the On Time 200ID and 400IHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). Of course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The On Time 400IHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen.

Something for Everyone
All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge iPod even when not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL.

Compatibility
The JBL On Stage 400ID loudspeaker system is compatible with docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPod nano G3 and iPod classic. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radio, and laptops. Specific dockable iPod compatibility: iPod mini 1G; iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G; iPod 3G, 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G; iPod touch.

Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls
Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, browse songs, playlists and photos, change tracks and settings, and more. With the JBL On Stage 400ID RF remote, you have complete control of your iPod, as if it were in your hand.

Connection Versatility
The JBL On Stage 400ID system is a multimedia focal point. Enjoy your iPod, view photos or videos, and listen to virtually any other auxiliary audio component, all through the JBL On Stage 400ID loudspeaker dock. Connect the USB cable to your computer for full compatibility with iPod and iTunes.

Digital Power and DSP
The system features a powerfully tuned digital audio path. The clean and compact digital amplification, coupled with DSP (digital signal processing) equalization, efficiently provides the transducers with cool-running power.

Additional Features

  • Smart remote--The Smart remote has several modes of operation. The Music mode allows you to control the volume, change tracks, fast forward, and fast reverse. The Navigation mode allows you to navigate menus for your iPod, just as if you were controlling the iPod itself. You can access your music, view your slideshows, and find and play your videos.
  • Evercharge topology--The JBL On Stage 400ID system charges your iPod, even when not connected to the computer or if the system is off.

Advanced Technology
The JBL On Stage 400ID loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies for the highest quality sound, offering astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction.

  • Odyssey and Atlas transducers--The Odyssey drivers provide accurate high frequencies, while the Atlas woofer produces clean, powerful bass.
  • Slipstream port design--The JBL On Stage 400ID port minimizes boundary layer separation, resulting in high-output bass with low distortion.
  • COE (Computer-Optimized Equalization)--The JBL On Stage 400ID system equalization is computer-optimized, for a rich, complete soundstage.
  • OCT (Optimized Compression Topology)--The proprietary compression technology ensures clean, accurate sound at high output levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Exceeded My Expectations!, April 19, 2009
This review is from: JBL On Stage 400ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I used to think that no sound system would surpass the quality of sound I have in my car... of course four good speakers connected to a superb stereo in a totally isolated environment (if your windows are closed!) should produce an incredible sound..... well, this speaker started to question what I thought...

I bought the JBL On Stage 400ID after doing some serious research... I went to the Bose and Apple Store. At Apple Store I could try I lot of iPod Speakers... even with the same song... I could listen to the Bose (besides the Bose Store), Altec Lansing, Logitech, iHome, among others, until I finally got to hear the JBL 200ID and it just put an end to my search... The sound was so clear and defined, and really was what I was looking for.... Compared to this one, other speakers, in my opinion, sound muddy or boomy, not clear or crisp enough.... It really made my decision pretty easy!

Then I saw this one on Amazon... the 400ID High Performance. So no doubt I got to go with this more recent and powerful version.

You don't need to read from me all its features and technical specifications since they're on the website, so I'll focus on the sound.

What amazes me the most of this device is the clarity of the sound that comes out of it. I'm talking about really crisp and clear sound!.

It handles lows really good, so you can hear really loud and clear bass sounds, and pretty punchy also if that's the case..... But don't think it is made to be a "Bassy Speaker", so you can hear crisp, clear and articulated treble sounds, being able to produce incredible highs, thus producing an amazing, balanced, quality sound.

Another feature I love of the speakers is that it really fills the room they're in with music... You feel the sound in every corner.

So, if you want a speaker for your iPod that produce a clear, crisp, articulated, quality and really balanced sound, this is the one for you....

3.0 out of 5 stars Great sound for footprint but disappointed by quality, 1st one did not work consistently, March 15, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JBL On Stage 400ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
JBL On Stage 400ID - High Performance Speaker Dock for iPod.
Out of the box, the unit did not work. Played around with unplugging, plugging back in and/or, turning off/on unit, removing and replacing iPod. The unit eventually produced great sound (for it's relatively small footprint) but it does not work consistently. Have to play with the cord, button and/or remove and replace iPod. There is no apparent rhyme or reason as when it will work or not. Arranging to send back for a replacement. We will see how the next one works.

Will update the review after the replacement arrives. If the unit worked consistently, would have given it five stars for the features & sound quality.

3/18/09 - received the replacement unit and this one DOES work out of the box so far. Will up date again after a burn-in period. It's probably worth noting also that the tech at JBL said it SHOULD work out of the box and recommended returning for a replacement. Here are additional notes about the usage & sound. It was purchased to replace a previous onstage, little donut shaped unit, that was discontinued. I used to use that thing to go from room to room (even outside occasionally for parties/gatherings). I loved it. I read a review that the new on stage II was basically comparable to the 400ID. Based on what I could see via the JBL specs and have heard so far, there is NO way! I am hearing nuances my old iPod tunes I never heard before. I am hearing things that are lost with my PC's Bose Companion 3 series II, which have their own quality issues, i.e. lacking clarity and they emit constant audible hiss (regardless of the volume level/muting). Hopefully, I'll get as much and more enjoyment out of the On Stage 400ID as I did out of the little sibling.
3/19/09 - Only took one day for the replacement to start 'acting up' moved it from one room to another and it would not produce sound without going through the motions of plugging/unplugging, on/off, removing and reseating the iPod a few times. It is working again but for the $, this unit should work consistently. Also, this replacement is brighter than the first 400ID (the first one was a little warmer sounding when it worked).

2.0 out of 5 stars Just OK., August 14, 2009
This review is from: JBL On Stage 400ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
The unit has alright sound, not a lot of bass. I wasn't expecting sub-woofer bass but I was expecting something with a little fuller sound. Don't expect a lot of volume either. Better sound quality at low volume. Lack of bass gets worse at higher levels. Doesn't work well with the 4th generation nano. The holding fixture doesn't allow it to seat properly and the unit cuts in and out when trying to change songs.
