EPIC, Earbuds Reimagined. Revolutionary Fit. Radical Sound. 8 Years. 1 EPIC pair of earbuds. That's right. The EPIC is the result of eight years of engineering, research and design. They're the new bad boy of sound - and they were created directly from customer feedback, reviews and industry know-how. 1,000 ways to rock. Comfortably. We straight ran out of ways to make old technology comfortable. So, we got innovative. Introducing Cush Fins, the revolutionary earbud system that guarantees a perfect fit and ear-lapping comfort. Coupled with seven gel tips, Cush Fins give you 1,000-plus formulas to fine-tune your listening setup. Whoa, this is big. Sound not forgotten. Just because they're comfortable doesn't mean they won't rattle your globe. The EPIC uses C3 technology to deliver clean, crisp sound no matter your flavor of music. Drench your ears in vibrant highs and song-defining mids - all delivered through JLab's high-performance 13-mm drivers, the largest driver we've ever packed into an earbud. Perhaps. But how epic would these earbuds be if they weren't built to last? Featuring a universal mic and simple track control, the flat, tangle-free cable offers additional strength when things get messy. Seriously, we tested these during a death match with a cobra, puma and liger. OK, no, we didn't. But they're pretty dang strong.

I was suspicious of the number of 5 star reviews before the official release date, but recognized that Jlab makes a few excellent headphones, so I bought on release date anyway.

I'm a semi-audiophile of the budget variety, and am comparing to ~25 of the best budget earphones, which I own. For reference, my hearing goes to 15.9Khz, which is not bad for my age, and I can hear/feel down to 10 Hz.

I have the Jlab J4, J5m, and J6m. To compare, the J4 has midbass bloat, way too much for an audiophile to tolerate, but it was extremely well built. The J5 was a drastic improvement. It a great, well built, and comfortable earphone with a nice bump in the bass without being bloated, excessive, or midbass focused. The J6 required 100 hours of burn in , but was then excellent and no longer sibilant, and pretty balanced and flat sound signature, perhaps my favorite before the Epic.

In comparison, the Epic is a perfect bass connoisseur's earphone. Compared to the J5 it has deeper and more powerful subbass lows and makes the J5 seem like it has a midbass hump. The subbass is what the bass connoisseur desires, but excessive midbass is what lower quality and famous name earphones usually have. The Epic has both subbass impact, quantity, and quality. That is an unusual combination. In comparison, I have the highly rated Philips Fidelio S1 which costs $100, it has a somewhat similar angled shape. It has excellent subbass impact, but lacks the subbass quantity of the Epic. So in proportion, the S1 seems to have a little too much treble energy, while the Epic is just right.

The Epic also wins on comfort.

I was initially disappointed by these headphones, but now I am satisfied. First the positives: the memory wire wrap-around for the ears works great, keeping the earbuds in place while exercising. The sound quality, like many JLab headphones, is good, with a nice mix of bass and highs leading to a clean sound. I own many different models of JLab headphones and these are by far the best fitting I've had yet. Now the negatives: I purchased these earbuds for walking and exercise. The first time I used them for walking on a cold (19F) and very windy day, I placed them in my ears and let the microphone/volume control module dangle under my chin. During the walk I experienced lots of drops from the Bluetooth connection leading to poor sound quality and choppy playback, either from the wind or the bouncing of the reception unit under my chin. The earbuds were paired with an iPhone 5. The next day, which was equally cold but not windy, I arranged the earbuds in such a way that the microphone/reception unit was around my neck in the back. Configured this way, I had no issues with connectivity and the sound was smooth and clear. If my experience is typical, I suggest you try the latter configuration if using these earbuds for exercising. Of course, this makes accessibility to the volume controls and the on/off switch less convenient, but in my case that is not a problem. As long as this behind the neck configuration continues to work for me, I'll enjoy the freedom of no wires while walking and exercising. This is particularly helpful while practicing T'ai Chi.

Seriously, you're wasting your time, just buy them.

Oh you're still reading? Seriously? Well fine then, if you're going to make me type. These are Hands.Down.The.Best.Earbuds.I've.Ever.Used.Period. You could call me a earbuds junkie, I don't mind. I've been around the world and back again. J3s, J4s, J5s, Beats by Dre. Monster. Shure. Skullcandy. Bose. Tried them all.

The JLab EPICs absolutely destroy the competition in all aspects.

- Clarity is unreal. Highs like you were sitting on the bench right next to Beethoven.
- Lows like you are inside the woofer in Ibiza. Like IN the Woofer. The bass is off the charts.
- To top it all off, they stay in your frickin ear when active.

Hallelujah! Praise the new king of music bliss. If you are putting anything else in your ear you should feel filthy and probably get checked.

Let me start by saying that I have been a faithful JLab customer since the beginning. The reason why is because I am an audiophile on a budget. This will be an in depth review, covering sound, design, and comfort.

Firstly, I am testing with an HTC One M8 (which supports aptX), and music files of 320 kbps quality. I use Viper4Android (EQ) to add natural bass (which I do on all headphones/earphones). I can share my specific settings upon request.
___________

So when JLab announced they would be putting forth a Bluetooth version of the EPIC, I was overjoyed. The EPIC is my favorite product to date, with great sound. Before this announcement however, I tried to get on the 'wireless earphone' train, by picking up a pair of JayBird BlueBuds X earbuds. Oh my word were they horrendous. The sound was awful, with absolutely no bass, and muddled sound. Instantly returned those suckers. That being said, I was then apprehensive about any Bluetooth earbuds. JLab however, did not disappoint with their sound. So let's jump right into it:

___________
The sound:
- 'Highs': JLab seems to have revised the audio profile in these earphones, compared to the original Epic, cutting out some treble. This was a step in the right direction, but I believe they cut out a little too much. In songs with any bass (let's say a bass guitar, or deep keys on the piano), higher notes are hard to make out. So in a song with an orchestra and drums, the violins are barely audible. However, with little-no bass present, this is not an issue. The Highs simply seem under powered.

- 'Mids': The mids by themselves are great. I have yet to hear if they play well with other 'sounds'.
