This review is from: JDS 15000 Dust-Gate Start-Up Kit 110V (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have tried using the remote operated switches and could never keep up with the remotes so I ended up walking back to the collector and turning it off manually. I saw this and was impressed with the price so I figured I'd give it a shot before spending a bundle on the one that opens and closes when the machine is started and stopped. The set up consists of replacing your old blast gates with the new ones and running a wire from the gate back to the control box that your dust collector is plugged into. It took me about 4 hours to install this unit and 4 additional gates. I have been using it for a little over a year now and have been extremely happy with it. An added benefit over the remote control is that you cannot forget to close gates since the collector keeps running until the gate is closed. An added agrivation is that the collector keeps running until the gate is closed so you do find yourself turning the unit off and on more that necessary. I'd still prefer the automatic gate solution, but for the money saved and my overall satisfaction with this unit it will never happen since I will always find another tool that I just have to have.

Quick Synopsis: Great, well designed product that works well, built with quality material, but the assembly quality, though easily corrected, is sub-standard.Recommendation: If you are comfortable with a Philips screwdriver and a pair or pliers to tighten loose binding posts, you should not hesitate to buy this product. Full Review: My wife and I own a custom closet and home organization company and have nothing but JDS Dust Collectors (3 - 3HP Cyclones and 2 1.5HP Dust Forces), purchased at three different time. All of their products are very effective, very well designed and built with quality materials. In general, we can highly recommend them and can attest that they are sold at a very good value. JDS Company is located in South Carolina, and every conversation I've had with them it was apparent that they truly care. In one shipment, the dust collection bag was missing and was immediately shipped to us as soon as we called. So, all that good stuff, why 3 stars? I purchased 2 Dust Gates recently. Upon opening them, the binding posts (red and black knobs) on top that are used to connect the wires were loose and could rotate within the housing. After a few minutes of playing with the posts, I heard a nut fall within the housing. I opened up the case to tighten the nut that holds the binding post to the case and to re-attach the nut that holds the wire to the inside of the binding post. This was relatively easy to accomplish, but while open, I also noticed that one of the spade connectors for the internal circuit breaker was not properly attached and was instead being held against the metal spade of the circuit breaker simply by the clear plastic shielding around the wire end connector. This would have caused arcing to be sure. This too was a simple fix and both problems were as a result of improper assembly in Taiwan. I found the 2nd Dust-Gate also had loose binding posts so I disassembled that one too to tighten those and check the circuit breaker connections. With those problems corrected and the devices installed, they work flawlessly.

For just a little more than the price of regular blast gates I got full shop automation. Do NOT underestimate the importance of dust collection to begin with, (health, cleanliness, etc.) but make dust collection convenient and you'll be more productive and LOVE your shop even more than you already do. I've worked in shops without dust collection so I KNEW I needed to add it to the shop I was building. I didn't like the idea of having to turn on the machine, open gates, close gates, turn off the machine, and remember which gates were still open, etc. With the JDS system, the gate IS the switch, and dust collection is easy: Open the gate, cut all you want, close the gate. You can get into a groove with your projects because you don't have to stop to close another gate or turn off a machine on the other side of the shop. If your collector is still running, you know the gate you just used is still open. No more guessing or closing more than one gate because you forgot 2 operations ago. No more 1/2 suction. The metal blast gates are sturdy, I even drilled a couple of them to insert threaded rod to make remote levers. Now, instead of bending over under my mitre saw, I pull a lever. When the cuts are done, I tap the lever back, usually with the workpiece, and the machine shuts off. On my downdraft table, the gate is under the table, so I ran threaded rod straight up through the table top and threaded a wooden knob onto it. Pull up to turn it on, and again I tap it with the workpiece to turn it off. When it's that easy, you don't ever think "oh, it's just one cut, I don't need to do all that..." and your shop stays MUCH cleaner. So does your nose, so I can only assume your lungs too! Now, for the reason I didn't give it 5 stars: The screws that hold the switch in place are just too small. They loosen regularly and when they do, the machine won't shut off. I haven't stripped them out yet, but that's only because I read reviews and was forewarned that they strip easily so: BE CAREFUL. This isn't a show-stopper, I knew about it before I went with JDS, but it sure would be sweet if they fixed the problem. (maybe they already have, I've had mine for 9 mos. already) BOTTOM LINE: You can't beat the convenience of this system for the price!
