2.0 out of 5 stars Very noisy
Although the product description says "whisper quiet", this thing makes a racket. Even on the lowest speed it is very noisy. On high it is intolerable. While it filters the air as advertised it makes so much noise that there was no way I could use it. I returned it and got the Jet AFS-1000B. While the Jet is not silent, it's a whole lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Variable Speed a Big Plus, December 12, 1999

The variable speed feature of the JDS unit is a real benefit as are the two speed ranges. At the low speed setting you can barely tell the unit is on. The only noise you hear at the maximum setting is from the rush of air, not rattles. Delta's unit moves more air, 850 cfm vs the JDS units 750 cfm, but is not as quiet (based on sample size of one) and is single speed. The JDS unit has a pull chain that allows you to turn the unit on and off and change speed range when the unit is ceiling mounted. The Delta unit has a rocker on/off switch. Get help mounting the unit on the ceiling, its awkward to handle and heavy. Mounting hardware and rubber feet came with my unit, a nice touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Quality, Great Value, February 21, 2001

I locally purchased the Delta Air Cleaner prior to this unit based on price. Once getting it home I realized that I had given up many features to save a few dollars. I returned the Delta and got this unit, it was worth it!

The JDS quality of build is far above the Delta. Heavier gage case and better attention to detail in manufacture. The eloctrostatic air filter is a real value (since it is the outer filter that needs the most frequent replacing/cleaning), and the infinitely variable speed adjustment and pull switch all make this unit well worth the little extra money. The pull switch will half whatever setting you have as high on the variable speed adjustment (each pull is - high, mid, off).

I have reviewed the Jet product as well (only in literature, not hands on) and feel that the JDS is still a better unit. The Jet has the remote control feature which sounds good at first. I have a stereo in my shop that has a remote, never use it. It's never in a convenient place relative to me or I can't find it! I feel the remote for the air cleaner would be the same, and I feel it's just one more gizmo to break or get lost. The air cleaner goes on and off only once a day, no big deal.

It would be nice if the JDS had a timer as does the Jet, but it's an easy addition if I find it necessary.

The JDS says lifetime warranty, that's on the case only, the motor is 1 year. Not sure about the other brands.

One more little thing. I've worked to create a nice atmosphere in my shop and I really dislike products that are sticker laden billboards for the manufacturer. I felt the Delta was an eyesore hanging from my ceiling and the Jet looks to be the same from the pictures. The JDS is subdued and professional looking, a small thing indeed, but perhaps something to consider if you dislike visually obtrusive logoism.

I would buy this unit again and highly recommend it as a necessary safety item in any dust laden environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Protect The Most Precious Tool in Your Shop - YOU, November 14, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JDS 750-ER 14022 3 Speed Air Filtration System with Remote and Electrostatic Pre-Filter (Tools & Home Improvement)
I had a body shop for 20 years. We did a lot of high end cars. At the risk of sounding stupid, I always wondered why the spotless shops always had smokeaters on the ceiling. (That is what they called them) Being that the shop was large enough to hold 20 cars, I would need two, and that would run me about 4 grand for the size that I needed. It always got put on the back burner.
I no longer own the shop, but now have a pretty elaborate home woodworking shop in the basement. Even though it was in a separate room, and I would frequently install a fan in the high windows, the whole basement still managed to get dusty. Yeah real dusty. Now thanks to the JDS Air Tech, the shop, doesn't even get real dusty. I get some wood chips on the floor, which to some extent can't be avoided, but the air is clear. I still use a mask while sanding or using saws. Not a litlle white cotton thing, but a real mask like the 3M R6211 Dual Cartridge Paint Spray Respirator. The simple dust and pollen masks don't do the job. They leak around the edges real bad, almost like not having a mask on at all.
After twenty years of exposure, my lungs are clear, thanks to always using a quality mask. In the woodworking industry, their is a disease they call brown lung, or black lung, and it is a result of years of exposure to fine wood airborne dust.
Wear a mask, get a shop vac to hook up to your equipment, and buy a JDS Air Tech Air Filtration system. You'll have a much cleaner shop, healthier lungs, and the quiet hum of the motor gives a warm cozy feeling to the shop that is hard to describe. Now on to the nuts and bolts of it.
I considered the Delta models, and became concerned when I read the reviews on their dust collection systems. Several people had blown motors in the first month, and many more of them were blowing circuit breakers. I didn't know if that would spill over into their air filtration units.
The Delta's had a timer and a remote control. The timer was set in 1/2 hour incrementals up to 7 1/2 hours. What if you only wanted to leave it running for 15 minutes when you left the shop?
When another reviewer mentioned the thin gauge metal used in the Delta, I decided to try the JDS. I'm glad I did. It included a free electrostatic filter, something that I had to pay for on the Delta. All in all it was one hundred dollars less.
You would have to position the delta so the proper side was exposed for the remote control to work.
I decided with the money saved, I would install a switch timer on the wall for twenty bucks and keep the eighty in my pocket. That way I can set it to constant on, for long term use, or set it for precisely the amount of time I want to leave it running when I leave the shop.
The JDS does have a pull chain on it if you want to use stop, slow, or full on. In addition the variable speed knob gives you infinitely variable speed settings between 200 and 750.
That is one thing about the Delta, it moves a little more air at 1000 CFM instead of 750. My shop is 30x15 and the JDS clears the dust out of the air in only a minute or two. I guess that is because it is located in the center of the shop, directly over the dustiest production area.
One other thing is that I like the idea of having both ends of the unit being all filter area. The Delta has a little opening on one end. Makes me think that the little opening filter would require more cleaning or replacement.
The JDS boasts a cleaning rate of 99% of the airborne particles. The Delta advertises 91% of the particles 1 micron or larger. At a woodworking publication site, they had a review of the different air cleaners, and the JDS came in at 80% of particles 1 micron in size. Then they explained that different manufacturers used different standards to determine their filtration specifications, so that was not a reliable method of comparison. I'm up in the air on that issue. :-) No pun intended.
The Delta appears to be louder, made of thinner gauge metal, and related to it's cousin dust collection series that is fraught with electrical problem reviews.
The JDS is super quiet, even when running at top speed. At the lowest setting, you barely know it is on. It is a solidly built unit, and well packaged from the factory.
All in all I give it 5 stars for price, performance, and usability. I give it 100 stars, for being part of a package, that protects the most important tool in your shop, and that is you.

I have found this filtration system to be invaluable when used with a proper dust collection system. While the dust collectors pick up the large pieces of sawdust, the filtration makes the air in the shop comfortable to breathe, especially for someone like me who has allergies to dust. Getting the electrostatic filter with this unit gives it great value.

I purchased this unit from Amamzon about 9 months ago and it worked exactly as advertised. However, one day I went into the shop and it wouldn't operate. Called the company; these guys don't have a clue about modern customer service. Not only did I NOT have to go through 20 minutes of nested options or get put on hold, I was put through to customer service immediately. GET SERIOUS! So, I explained my problem to the customer service "rep" and the first thing he says is "Don't worry this won't cost you a penny." See what I mean; clueless. So he talks me through a diagnostic routine and determines right away that it's the circuit board, says he'll put it in the mail today. Imagine my disappointment when it arrives 2 days later, denying me the oppurtunity to call them back and say "where the Heck is my circuit board?". So I call them anyway and ask for the "rep" (who was foolish enough to identify himself by name) to express my displeasure at being treated as if my satisfaction with their product actually mattered to them. So get this; it turns out the "rep" was no "rep" at all, he's the President and owner of the company! What's next, house calls? Come on guys, you're giving bad service a bad name.

Ps. Kudos to JDS Tools for a great product and world class customer service.

I just intalled the air cleaner in my 3 car garage/shop. I am amazed and how much cleaner the air is! I wish I had done this sooner! I wouldn't exactly call the low speed "whisper quiet". "Reasonably quiet" is more apt. To be practical, though, I have an attached garage and the air cleaner cannot be heard through the closed door even at the highest setting. The remote control is very convenient. (even comes with a mounting clip). Fit and finish are excellent. Well packaged and arrived in perfect condition. A few things that I'd like to point out.
1) The "manual" is taped to the outside of the box. I discovered this after ripping it in half. No problem, it's only a single sheet of folded paper. It's pretty obvious how to use it anyway.
2) This is a huge (for my garage) 12x24x34 and 65lbs.
3) Removing the filters for maintenance or replacement is very easy due the thoughtfully designed and well made case.

I nearly fainted when I saw the Made in USA sticker on the side. Thought for sure it would be Taiwan (other reviews were too positive for it to come from China).

This is big and heavy for a basement workshop, but boy is it nice to have up there when you run a power saw. I actually managed to get the thing up to the ceiling on my own though using ropes and knots I remembered from my seafaring days.

The timer feature is nice. I can set it to run for up to 4 hours after I've finished kicking up dust. I have noticed a big difference in dust in the workshop since this unit has been installed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top shelf product!, January 7, 2002

I've been using the JDS 750 for a almost 2 years now and I'm still very happy with it. I added the charcoal filter for days when I'm finishing. The helpful people at JDS told me that to to extend the life of the charcoal filter, keep it in a plastic bag when I'm not using it.

I just purchased a retro-fit kit to add the remote control and shut-off timer features. Originally, I though the remote wouldn't be necessary but after using the unit for a while it seems it would be more convenient to have the remote. Plus the shut-off timer is a great help. I've left my unit on overnight more than once...

The competing Jet and Delta units are also nice. I checked them both out at shows and local stores. I thought the fit and finish of the Delta unit was not quite up to par with either the JDS or Jet units. This could certainly have more to do with how the Delta units I have seen were handled by resellers rather than anything to do with Delta. I own many Delta products and they are a fine company so I suppose you'll have to use your own judgement on this point.

Customer service from JDS is great. They happily answered all of my questions any time I called.

All three units seem to have similar features but what made my decision was the fact that JDS specializes in this area and their customer service is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased, August 9, 2005
This review is from: JDS 750-ER 14022 3 Speed Air Filtration System with Remote and Electrostatic Pre-Filter (Tools & Home Improvement)
After much research and thought, I purchased the JDS 750 from Amazon. I couldn't be more pleased with my decision. I compared similar units from Delta, Jet and Grizzly. The JDS beat them all hands down and it should. JDS specializes in this type of equipment. Ordering from Amazon was easy and the free shipping was great. I received it 3 days ahead of the est. delivery date in perfect condition.

The only problem I had, was deciding the best place to locate it in my shop. I have an L shaped space to work in and wasn't sure how effective the cleaner would be. Little did I know, I really had nothing to worry about. I keep it on medium and it's amazing how much cleaner my shop is now. Don't worry about the noise from this machine. After I turn it on the quiet hum blends in and you don't even hear it.
Actually, I kind of miss it when it's not on.

Do your self a favor and get this unit. You and your eyes and lungs will be much happier and healthier. Not to mention how much cleaner your shop will be. It really is an amazing difference.

I hope this has helped with your decision. I'm really glad we have this kind of resource to go to when making these kinds of purchases.

I finally decided to break down and purchase an air filter for my shop. I've noticed that there is a lot of fine dust collecting all over the shop. The shop vac does a good job of getting up the chips and sawdust, but even though I don't spend a whole lot of time in the shop, that fine dust floating in the air and setting on everything was not good. I needed to put a fininsh of polyurathane on a desk I'm building, and I was worried about the dust settling on the top, so I purchased this. The first day I got it, I turned it on and with the air compressor, blew every thing off in the shop. With all the dust now in the air, you could see a flow into the air cleaner. I decided with that much junk in the air, I needed to be somewhere else. I came back in about 15 minutes and the air was clean. It was fairly amazing since when I've done this in the past, it has taken hours for the dust to settle back down.

The first coat of polyurathane I put down ended up with a fair amount of dust in the finish. I sanded this down and with the air cleaner running every time I was in the shop, by the third coat, I was seeing a remarkable difference in the amount of dust in the finish. By the way, the timer on the machine works great, turn it on and walk away.

I should have purchased one of these years ago.

My only complaint is that the unit comes with almost zero in the way of instructions. The only instructions were to removed the styrofoam from inside the blower. Not that a lot of instruction is needed, but it turns out that you have to remove the screws from the top to put in the hooks for hanging it from the ceiling. Also, the remote is a little wierd in that sometimes the on/off button and the timer and speed settings aren't quite intuitive. The first night the fan ran all night even though the indicators said 2 hours. Of course this didn't hurt anything given all the dust in the air. I've got it figured out now, but a little instruction wouldn't have hurt.

The packing job isn't that great either. It arrived with one corner slightly dented. Not a functional problem and since it is up in the air over 9 feet, I don't even see it. It certainly isn't worth returning such a heavy unit just for that little damage, but it would have been nice if it arrived perfect.

Having the remote is great given that my ceiling is over 10 feet high and without the remote, I'd have to get on a ladder to reach the controls.
