4.0 out of 5 stars Joe Lynn Turner is like fine wine, December 10, 2003
This review is from: Jlt (Audio CD)
Joe Lynn Turner is like fine wine. His solo efforts "Holy man" and "Slam" was indeed good albums and the collaboration with legendary Glenn Hughes (ex Trapeze, ex Deep Purple) have resulted in two excellent vintage sounding rock albums ("HTP 1" & "HTP 2"). It sure seems like Turner have regained his musical spark, and the mediocre "Hurry up and wait" seem miles away.

"JLT" starts with "In cold blood", a fast rocker in the same vein as "Devil's road" from "HTP 1". But this album isn't a furious rock attack, and besides from the speedy "Drivin' with my eyes closed" (a modern "Death alley driver"?), the material is mostly in mid tempo with fat guitars and roaring hammond organ. You can sense a clear vintage Aerosmith touch in the strutting "Let's go", while "Crying out loud" with it's opening "Fool for your loving"-riff (Whitesnake) reminds a bit of Alannah Miles' world wide hit "Black velvet". "Blood fire" makes me think a bit of Paul Rodgers' Bad Company and their finest moments, and "Hit the switch" is a fat piece with a satisfying groove. "Jump start" is a blues inspired number with a typical rock lyric that in these days is totally political incorrect ("I was feeling run down tonight / But your skirt is high and your shirt is so tight / And those suicide heels just gave me a kick and a shove / Jump start my love") - keep it up Turner! If you have followed Joe Lynn Turner over the years you know that the man has a thing for ballads and of course there are a couple included even on this album. But the fact is that Turner have recorded much stronger ballads before and these slow numbers do not get me excited. The album closes with a heavy and slow instrumental guitar orgy that sadly lacks emotion.

"JLT" is comparable to "Holy man" as well as to "Slam" and which one is the better is hard to say. But I believe that if you're into the likes of Deep Purple and Whitesnake there's a big chance that you'll be satisfied with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible, July 30, 2004

I have been a fan of bands JLT has been in beginning in the early 80s when he was in Rainbow and through the deep purple album. I recently returned to some rock and roll roots and picked this cd up and I was really suprised. One of his earlier releases, name alluding me presently, left a poor impression on me and that made me even more happy to hear this one. there is awesome dirversity here. the quality of the tracks are top notch and jlt's vocals are great. i think this cd matches up to some of the stuff he did with Rainbow and i highly recommend this disc.

Sometimes you are just pleasantly surprised by something you purchase; and this is one of those times. We buy anything JLT or Glenn Hughes puts out before previewing the album, and have never been disappointed, but JLT is truly a magnificent disc!! In Cold Blood is a solid rocker, but "Excess" is a masterpiece and a tune that deserves radio play and should be a staple for rock DJs everywhere. Joe Lynn Turner can sing with the best of them, and now he shows he can write with them too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just a great vocalist, June 19, 2011
This review is from: JLT (Audio CD)
Solid songwriting, driving guitar riffs, fantastic vocals ... what more do you need? While not one of my favorites (maybe yet), the album fits well in my stack of not so loudly rocking albums of JLT. Some of his work doesn't let you enjoy his range and depth. This album does. Nothing fantastic in ways of standout songs but nothing gross or irritating either...not that I'd say that about any of his solo records. "Hit the Switch" really has a great intro to it. Let me caveat this review by saying I listened to HTP 2 right before this album and this album was such a refreshing and pleasant change after it that I might be a bit more favorable. "Driving with my eyes closed" is a bit too screamo for me but it is fun lyrically.

4.0 out of 5 stars pleasantly suprised, June 29, 2004

I have been a long time deep purple and rainbow fan. For me, I have been looking at JLT for a while to see if he still can rock. I was pleasantly suprised when I listened to this one. Great production, vocals and musicianship. At times heavy rock and at times bluesy. I have listened to the album in its entirety several times and believe that this is up to par with some of the rainbow cds. Highly recommended!!
