At the beginning of WWII, Paige became a gunner in the 7th Regiment of the 1st marine Division. He was one of the 4,000 men who landed in the invasion of Guadalcanal. Paige survived an intense defensive battle that saw his entire platoon killed or wounded in hand-to-hand combat. Because of his brave acts in this defensive battle, Paige was awarded the Congressional Metal of Honor for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty. Had his position fallen, it would have surely led to the enemy recapture of Henderson Field, and the outcome of WWII may have been radically different. His great personal valor and unyielding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service and the American military!
