Book Description

July 1, 1995
From the world-famed Joslin Diabetes Center, here is the definitive guide to diabetes self-care -- an indispensable resource for everybody with the disease. The Joslin Diabetes Center, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, is considered the preeminent diabetes research center and clinic in the nation -- and indeed in the world -- and "The Joslin Guide" is without question the most up-to-date book in its field.

While diabetes and its complications kill 160,000 Americans annually, this book's goal is to significantly reduce your risk of becoming one of this disease's grim statistics. Based on the latest important new research, "The Joslin Guide" reveals the results of a ten-year nationwide study (DCCT) showing how people with one major type of diabetes (Type I) were able to reduce by 50 percent their risk of developing serious long-term complications.

Written under the leadership of physician-author Richard S. Beaser, M.D., working with Joan Hill and a team of experts at the Joslin Center in Boston, this book addresses every important issue that patients face in managing their condition. As practical as it is current, "The Joslin Guide" in easy-to-understand language and charts explains what and when to eat, how to monitor blood sugars, how to administer insulin and oral medications, how to treat high and low blood sugar, and how and when to exercise.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The nation's third leading fatal disease after heart disease and cancer, diabetes is the primary cause of blindness in working-age Americans and the cause for most cases of end-stage kidney failure and lower-extremity amputations. With judicious self-care and medical treatment, however, diabetics need not become part of these statistics, observes Beaser, chairman of Patient Education at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and associate professor at the Harvard Medical School. In this excellent, no-nonsense introduction to self-care for both insulin-dependent and noninsulin-dependent diabetics, he emphasizes the need for proper diet, weight control and exercise, and for frequent monitoring of blood sugar and ongoing medical supervision. Suggesting guidelines for office visits, medical tests that should be done regularly and questions to ask one's healthcare team, Beaser discusses insulin pumps, diabetes pills and what lies on the horizon of current diabetes research. Most valuably, he offers diabetics procedures for controlling their disease and, thus, their lives. This book belongs in the hands of all diabetics and those who share in their care and well-being.

5.0 out of 5 stars overview, February 21, 2000
This review is from: JOSLIN GUIDE TO DIABETES : A Program for Managing Your Treatment (Paperback)
The Joslin Guide to Diabetes: A program for Managing Your Diabetes copyright 1995 (may be updated soon?) is a comprehensive easy to use text designed for the person who has become a patient with diabetes. If you become familiar with the information in this book you can not only manage your diabetes better but you can make meetings with your physican more rewarding for yourself and your physician. This book contains less technical information on pathogenesis etc than the outdated (1989) Joslin Diabetes Manual which may still prove valuable to those so inclined. I highly recommend this book for diabetics and their families.

I bought this book because I liked the information from Joslin online. I'm a Registered Nurse and have read lots of things on diabetes. This is one of the best books on self care that I've read. It has a wealth of information presented in a readable style

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful guide with some good insights, March 17, 2006

This book has a wealth of useful information and would be equally useful for people that have had the condition for a period of years or have only just been diagnosed.

The book manages to combine a useful introduction to diabetes (including a lot of information that I personally only discovered the hard way) with more advanced material that would appeal to an individual that wanted to improve their overall diabetic control.

There are some drawbacks: the breadth of the audience addressed by the authors means that some of the early chapters seem overly simplistic; and the book is very much geared to the US ("cups" for dry measure and ounces for wet measure, what are you people thinking?). However the comparative dearth of diabetes literature aimed at the patient and the overall quality of the work means that this is one of the best buys on the market.
