Book Description

November 1, 1998
Dawn Miller's marvelous debut novel is a grand adventure -- and a glorious love story -- experienced with all the passion and yearning of a heroine you'll never forget: eighteen-year-old Callie Wade, whose hopeful heart is as rich with promise as the frontier, which calls her family from their Missouri farm to a new life out West. "The Journal Of Callie Wade" invites us into a world long vanished, brought to life once more in the pages of a young pioneer woman's diary.

April 12, 1859: ""What you can't duck, you best welcome." That's what Mama used to always say, anyway....Even though it was in me to fight going West, I couldn't; there's a light in Pa's eyes, a kind of hope that our Rose will find health and I see it in Jack's eyes, too. As wild and reckless as my brother can be, I know he dreams of better. When I look into Quinn's eyes I feel my own dreams, too...and the love. But everything is so unsure on the trail. Sitting here, staring at the scattered campfires of the train, I can almost hear the prayers to make it through another dust-choked mile, over another river, another birth...another death. Maybe Pa is right, maybe we'll all have a new chance at life in the West. But at what price?"

From bitter hardships to moments of shining joy, from unexpected friendships to Callie's blossoming love for Irishman Quinn McGregor, "The Journal Of Callie Wade" is a chronicle of courage and faith, an inspiring tale of hope and endurance to treasure for years to come.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Miller adds a feminine touch to the frontier in the voice of 18-year-old Callie Wade, who describes a wagon-train journey from Missouri to California in 1859. In a diary given to her by her late mother and in letters to a friend back home, Callie records daily routines, dangerous encounters and illnesses and tragedies. In addition to her family?her father, her brother, Jack, and her sickly sister, Rose?the entourage includes Zach Koch, a preacher's devilish son; blacksmith Quinn McGregor, Callie's eventual soul mate; and Grace Hollister, courageous widow and mother of four. Soon, Callie is torn between her budding love for Quinn and her responsibility for tending Rose. The journey is perilous, and sometimes even the resilient Callie has trouble maintaining her faith. But the wheels of the wagon train grind relentlessly on, stopping for nothing?not childbirth, nor cholera, not even heroic death. Homespun epigraphs from Callie's late mother intrude on the story, and Zach's sudden change of heart after he attempts to rape Callie is not entirely credible. While pleasant, Callie's simple, homespun voice is rather flat, and the narrative carries none of the lyric beauty of another recent epistolary novel of a wagon train journey, Karen Osborne's Between Earth and Sky.

From Library Journal

This first novel, comprising a collection of fictional letters, is based on many true events that occured during the opening of the West. Hardships of leaving behind familiar surroundings, childhood friends, and beloved household items are told with poignant elegance by Miller. She describes how women bore children between storms and visits from starving Natives. Two of the most compelling images in her story about brave women involve men: one is of Stem, a mulatto with a wooden leg; the other is of a Native looking over Stem's shoulder at the line of covered wagons, knowing his world is coming to an end. Loss of family and faithful animals as well as loss of virginity are all told in a gentle, hushed manner. The general public will find this book a welcome change.?Mary Chitty, Cambridge Healthtech, Waltham, Mass.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE JEWEL OF A BOOK, July 31, 2004
This review is from: The JOURNAL OF CALLIE WADE (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. I loved that it contained all a good book should...some historical background, excitement, intensity, and romance.

Callie Wade is leaving her hometown, Independence, to go out west with her Pa, her brother Jack, and her little sister Rose. Rose is a little girl of a sickly constitution and the journey is mostly made to see if California will help cure her, as she is failing where she is and hope could be found out west. Callie is soon torn between caring for dear little rose, and the handsome Irishman, Quinn MgGregor. Should she stay with her sister and always care for her, or marry the man she loves? Well anyway, Callie's journey is filled with trial and hardship, but also with triumph and love.

This book was amazing. There is a little scene with Quinn that could be left out of the story, but if you just skip over it this book was PERFECT. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well, read and enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, April 7, 2003
By
Marissa (Front Royal, Virginia United States) - See all my reviews
I initially chose to read this book because of the pretty cover. I also love historical journal/diary form books. This seemed like a perfect pick for me. Boy, am I glad I chose it! This has become my favorite book of all time. I make a point to read it every two years. If I read it any sooner, I will remember everything and it won't be as exciting.

Callie Wade is angry at her father for dragging her away from the house she loves, her best friend, and the life that she has known forever. Using a diary her mother gave her before she died, Callie records the perilous, and sometimes wonderful events of her wagon train ride west. She records illnesses on the train, including her young sister, Rose's. She also records her blossoming love for a mysterious blacksmith named Quinn.

She must learn to deal with the dangers of wagon life, from dealing with death to dealing with a devilish preacher's son. Throughout it all, Callie's endurance and her love for Quinn and Rose is constant.

This is a marvelous book. Warning to readers: Do not listen to reviewers beforehand who claim that this book is not very good because it is not accurate. If some minute detail isn't correct, the outstanding characters and the plot itself makes up for it. This is a charming book that will endear itself to your heart forever!
