5.0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE JEWEL OF A BOOK
I loved this book. I loved that it contained all a good book should...some historical background, excitement, intensity, and romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars doesn't really make use of the diary format
The thing I liked best about this book was the author's beautiful and evocative descriptions of the land through which Callie travels. I really felt as though the author has actually been to the places about which she writes and has walked and ridden more than a few miles along the wagon trail. I liked Callie and her family and the people she meets but thought the...

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE JEWEL OF A BOOK, July 31, 2004
This review is from: The JOURNAL OF CALLIE WADE (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. I loved that it contained all a good book should...some historical background, excitement, intensity, and romance.

Callie Wade is leaving her hometown, Independence, to go out west with her Pa, her brother Jack, and her little sister Rose. Rose is a little girl of a sickly constitution and the journey is mostly made to see if California will help cure her, as she is failing where she is and hope could be found out west. Callie is soon torn between caring for dear little rose, and the handsome Irishman, Quinn MgGregor. Should she stay with her sister and always care for her, or marry the man she loves? Well anyway, Callie's journey is filled with trial and hardship, but also with triumph and love.

This book was amazing. There is a little scene with Quinn that could be left out of the story, but if you just skip over it this book was PERFECT. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well, read and enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, April 7, 2003
By
Marissa (Front Royal, Virginia United States) - See all my reviews
I initially chose to read this book because of the pretty cover. I also love historical journal/diary form books. This seemed like a perfect pick for me. Boy, am I glad I chose it! This has become my favorite book of all time. I make a point to read it every two years. If I read it any sooner, I will remember everything and it won't be as exciting.

Callie Wade is angry at her father for dragging her away from the house she loves, her best friend, and the life that she has known forever. Using a diary her mother gave her before she died, Callie records the perilous, and sometimes wonderful events of her wagon train ride west. She records illnesses on the train, including her young sister, Rose's. She also records her blossoming love for a mysterious blacksmith named Quinn.

She must learn to deal with the dangers of wagon life, from dealing with death to dealing with a devilish preacher's son. Throughout it all, Callie's endurance and her love for Quinn and Rose is constant.

This is a marvelous book. Warning to readers: Do not listen to reviewers beforehand who claim that this book is not very good because it is not accurate. If some minute detail isn't correct, the outstanding characters and the plot itself makes up for it. This is a charming book that will endear itself to your heart forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, emotional and heartfelt story., November 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The JOURNAL OF CALLIE WADE (Mass Market Paperback)
The Journal of Callie Wade is a wonderful story. It is written in a journal format, and feels as if one has discovered a long-lost diary which has been hidden away in an attic trunk. Callie is a terrific character - sometimes introspective and thoughtful; sometimes feisty. The secondary characters are equally intriquing. This book made me laugh aloud. It also made me shed many tears. Callie's heartaches and family tragedies are written with so much emotion, that I felt as if I were right alongside her during the events. The Journal of Callie Wade is a truly wonderful reading experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traveling the Trail, April 23, 2006
This is the story of Callie Wade, an 18 year old woman who leaves behind all she's known in Missouri to travel with her family to California. Callie is a thoughtful writer who recounts the days' events faithfully as she finds herself facing more hardships than she ever imagined. Not only is the trail an unforgiving obstacle to be overcome, but Callie must fight off unwanted suitors as she finds herself falling unwillingly in love. Managing her own personal losses as she strives to stay positive begins to take its toll as the road seems never-ending and Callie finds herself battling her own hopelessness at times.

Realistically done, this is a fine novel that brings to life the incredible hardships the pioneers faced as they moved across our country in the 1800s. There is plenty of predictable heartbreak, but there is joy, too, and we come to understand that it is the glimpses of that joy that made the journey worthwhile for so many. Based on a family story, Miller has written convincingly and touchingly of a time that many of us today could not begin to imagine. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Power to the women!, June 1, 2004
"The Journal of Callie Wade" is full of hope, sorrow, joy, and truth. Dawn Miller wrote a diary that reads fast - too fast. I didn't want the story to end. I wanted it to go on forever, to see how their lives lived out in their new homes. This book is another perfect example of what women endured while traveling to find new homes and lives. A strong and powerful message is conveyed. I recommend.

This review is from: The JOURNAL OF CALLIE WADE (Mass Market Paperback)
The book, The Journal of Callie Wade, was a wonderful story of courage and the struggle of a young woman through life's hardest years. It takes the reader on an adveture to California and shares Callie's most inner thoughts and feelings with the journal format. A short, great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars doesn't really make use of the diary format, July 14, 1999

This review is from: The JOURNAL OF CALLIE WADE (Mass Market Paperback)
The thing I liked best about this book was the author's beautiful and evocative descriptions of the land through which Callie travels. I really felt as though the author has actually been to the places about which she writes and has walked and ridden more than a few miles along the wagon trail. I liked Callie and her family and the people she meets but thought the book had a very abrupt ending. I also think the author should have just written this as a first person novel. This would have allowed her to add more depth to her characters without having to keep them within the confines of a diary format. Still, it's a pleasant and interesting book and well worth reading.
