This is high-quality braided 16ga x 2 conductor speaker wire. It is quite flat, and only slightly visible underneath carpet. Probably would be invisible under the padding. It is from JSC Wire and Cable, pn# 2410-0050. Much, much cheaper that other flat wire. If you don't subscribe to the "you need gigantic, expensive wire" mumbo-jumbo and need to run under a carpet, you have found your product.

As the review above says, this wire is just about as high as regular speaker wire. The jacket definitely adds to the height but unless you coat the copper in rubber impregnated kevlar I'm not exactly sure how you would make it much thinner.
I used this wire to create two 20ft runs for rear surround speakers. The house had hardwood flooring with a rug between the couch and the entertainment center. No padding. The reason I still recommend this stuff is because:
1. It lays flat. It doesn't want to stay curled or kinked or twisted the way standard speaker wire does
2. It's wide. If you were to step on this stuff underneath an unpadded rug you'd notice it but not nearly the way you would with regular wire. Regular wire would form much more of a hill or pyramid that your feet would feel. Because this stuff is flat it blends into the rug a bit better.

Sound wise I can tell the difference. I'm using an all in one receiver/dvd player so it's not like the source is amazing but the tiny wires the rears originally came with couldn't deliver the goods. Not that rear speakers get much of the audio range but I can tell it improved the audio quality.

I've recently moved to another house with hardwood floors and as soon as we get a rug for the living room I'll probably need to order another 50ft. of this wiring.

This is very nice wire, but the thickness of the plastic shield adds too much to call this flat wire. Its about the same thickness as normal speaker wire.
