3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Stars for JSRF? Now here's why.......
When you buy a game there are about five things you need to look at. Graphics, sound, gameplay, value (how long will you play it), and basically wheether or not you think you will like enough to shell out [the money] to buy it. Jest Set Radio Future is the sequel to Jet Grind Radio (another good game). And for the most part it carries on the serious in serious style...

Jet Set Radio Future is the sequel to Jet Grind Radio on the Dreamcast and it is the epitome of a great game.

JSRF is set in 2024. A huge corporation has taken over Tokyo and bought the police. You play the skaters who are taking back the city . . . by tagging just about everything in sight. Okay, so it's not the most sophisticated plot in the world, but this is an amazingly fun game.

The gameplay is pure enjoyment. You pick a skater, then take on various sections of Tokyo, all of which are huge in scope, packed with human and vehicle traffic, and intricately designed. You'll find yourself grinding rails, staircases, power lines, and more. While grinding and skating, you pick up cans of spray paint, then use those cans to tag various buildings, vehicles, etc. Sometimes you are starting from scratch with the graffiti, and other times you are covering the tags of rival gangs.

In addition to tagging and grinding, you will find yourself fighting the corrupt police. You generally will come across the police in specific sections of the level or at the end, once you have completed all your tagging. To defeat the police you have to knock them over then spray paint their white uniforms, leaving them a huffing, puffing, multi-colored mess as they turn tail and run. Trust me--this is great fun. But don't slow down, or else the police will pile on you and drag you down and the chief, Hayashi, will take aim and shoot. (He's a bit crazy, and doesn't like you one bit.) Once your stamina is up, it's game over, so don't let the police drag you down.

In addition to the cops, you'll find yourself racing with fellow skaters to turn them into playable characters and battling with members of rival gangs, which often entails emulating a series of grinds. This is a nice addition to the gameplay and it helps increase the amount of playable characters.

There's so much more to the gameplay. Let me just say this: tanks. Oh yeah, the police want to take you down. And the grinding is not limited to flat surfaces. You can grind UP objects, which adds a nice dimension to gameplay. And believe me, you'll be needing to move up high to find all the tag spots.

The graphics are beautiful. The game sports a graphical technique called cell-shading, and the original Jet Grind Radio is the game that started this much-copied trend. This is also the game that does the technique the best. Cell-shading allows for 3D graphics that have a 2D look, creating something of a cartoon. Except this isn't kiddie stuff--we're talking a much more sophisticated, anime-type design in this game. The graphics scream cool, and you'll never get tired of staring at this game.

The music plays a huge role in the game, and there are about thirty tracks to listen to. The music is top notch, with beats that will stay in your head long after you've turned off your Xbox. The music, like the graphics and game play, is just plain cool.

Jet Set Radio Future is cutting edge, it's furious fun, it's hip and sleek and just flat out cool. Trust me, you will love this game. Buy it. Play it. Learn to love Sega, because they're the company that brought you this blessed work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars I gaming Experience, not just a game., February 9, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
I will make this short since I am sure it will not be seen very often since the last review I noticed was a couple years ago.

Lets be real. Today, eat console game you see that has a sports theme, besides one made by Nintendo, sports a medicore soundtrack, same dark and bland color theme, and does esentially the same thing. Jet Set Radio Future puts you into the shoes, or rollor blades, of someone and something a bit different. Sporting an excellent soundtrack you make your way around a huge city inspired by Current Day Pop Tokyo. The Colors used are bright and exciting and you can be assured when you play at least one thing in the game will give you a smile. The moves are simple enough to do and actually rather limited but that isnt the point of the game. You get points for moves but what you will find yourself doing most is either spraypainting walls for an objective or merely skating around while looking at the massive amount of detail that the developer put into this game. I would recommend this game to child or Adult alike. It is different and it is fun. I have logged over 70 hours in the game. Thats more than some multi-disked RPG games (FF7 took me 37 hours).

My personal experience on this game is very positive. I almost feel I owe it this review for the days I was able to spend on it. Days where life beats you down a knotch and you need a smile. This game, to this day, puts a big smile on my face when I play it. I just love it. How can you not? A developer created a game that is upbeat, positive, and extremely entertaining without using blood, gore, evil, or anything negetive found in most games now adays. Dont get me wrong, I am an advid Silent Hill Fanatic so I know my share of dark games, but sometimes you want to explore the polor opposite of things and Jet Grind Radio Future is always an awesome way to do it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hyper Adolescent Dream!, December 31, 2002
This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
This original game allows you to become an animated rave-kid on rollerblades, free-skating, grinding, and spraying graffiti all over Tokyo circa 2024. As a 37-year-old male, I understand the importance of these things. You can even spraypaint the cops to make them go away. Add to that the impossible air and extraordinarily long grinds, and you get a pretty fun game that's easy to learn and fun to play. If you're looking for a realistic extreme rollerblading simulation, look elsewhere. It ain't no Tony Hawk, but it's quite unlike anything else out there. The soundtrack is entertaining, although it can get a bit dull to hear the songs over and over again if you get stuck on a level. Basically, you have to hit "targets" with your spray cans to "tag" them with graffiti. Miss one, and you may be skating around trying to find it for a while. Also, in the beginning the dialog segments get pretty lengthy, so save your game immediately after you finish that phase. All in all, a pretty entertaining little game. I got mine along with Sega 2002 GT (also a fun game) in the XBox promotional package.

4.0 out of 5 stars JSRF, now discontinued. Get yours before its all gone!, August 4, 2002

This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
Jet Set Radio Future (JSRF) is a phenominal Xbox game. released when xbox was only 4 months old, Feb. 2002, it is already discontinued due to mediocre sales. however, do not let that phrase , "mediocre sales", affect your decisions of buying this game. it is excellent, but suffers a few flaws

Graphics:
The graphics of JSRF is "cel-shaded". meaning it takes on a "cartoonish" look. the graphics run at 60 Frames Per second, meaning that you will never notice choppy gameplay. however, there is one place called "The Garage" where the game slows down to about 3 Frames a sec. but that is only one place where slowdown happens in the entire game. overall, they are pretty solid. 4/5

Story:
Tokyo 2024. there is a business man named Gouji Rokkaku who is buying off the police, government, etc. causing much smack to be laid down. you are new to a gang called the GG's. there are only 3 members, but there will be more. there are many rival gangs, but their name will not be important until you play the game. as a member of the GG's, you gotta keep track of your territory, keep the police away and keep rivals from spraying graffiti in your place. there are many twists in the story. 5/5

Gameplay:
If you are confused about what you do in this game, you are a teen-ager in tokyo, 2024. you skate around with "roller blade" like skates. i think that they are magnetic, but that doesn't matter. JSRF is basically a skating/grafitti game. you skate around, covering rival gangs' tags and taking care of police men and police vehicles. the camera is in the 3rd person perspective, meaning there is a camera above your character's head. 3rd person games, usually have a problem with their camera and JSRF is no exception. however there is a camera reset button. there is no blood and the violence is pretty low. 4.5/5

Sound:
The soundtrack for the game is very appropraite. some may find this soundtrack of hip-hop, techno, and some other genres a bit repetitive, but i think it is excellent. 5/5

Fun:
This game is FUN!! although on your first run through the story mode, it is very difficult where you have to find all places to spray graffiti. after that, it is followed by a person representing the gang whose territory you just made your own wanting to battle you from spraying graffiti on your back, to flag collecting. and once your done with the story mode, you can unlock "Test Run" stages, where you can get extra characters. if you unlock every single character, then you will see a suprise of some sort. 5/5

JSRF is Fun, stylish, difficult, and discontinued, so get your copy now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Soul Brotha, December 29, 2004
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
Jet Set Radio is the best Xbox game next to Halo. The game has so much style that it's not even funny and it's a shame that people thinks it stinks since and I think it's dumb that this game comes for free(it's another way of saying the game stinks so it'll come for free with the xbox). The game is excellent. It has amazing Visuals. The Visuals are just as good as Jet Grind Radio but a tad bit better. The game is probably one of the best looking Xbox games around and has superb character models.

The games controll is very well down, smilebit and Sega did an excellent job with the controlls and I give them credit for that but not as much credit as I give them for the amazing Music! The music in this game is ten times better then Jet Grind Radio. Some of the best music I've heard in a game acctually. Very well done I must say. The only problem is that it doesn't have a time meter and there are occasional slowdowns if you're close to too many characters of yours.

I'll make this short and sweet..

Good
-best looking Xbox to date with amazing visuals
-great fast paced gameplay
-loads of stuff to find and characters to unlock
-A pretty cool though kind of lame storyline
-The seqaul to the best DC game ever, in my opinion..

Bad
-Some slow downs here and there
-The game can be completed very quickly
-Needs more music

Overall this is my favorite Xbox game and it has great visuals, awesome music, terrific fast pace action is the best Xbox in my opinion. Heck I think it's better then Halo!..well sort of...Overall this game is terrific and that is why I give it a..

4.6 out of 5 stars.

Very awesome Xbox game...

Lates..

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
Dude, seriously, not everygame needs a complex storyline behind it. If you play a game like Metal Gear Solid or whatever, its like a mini-movie. Now jet Set Lets you get away from all taht. It lets you just mess around in an awesome 3D world. So what if its cell shaded, its the awesomeness =D
Skating around and tagging thing IS THE MOST ENTERTAINING thing to do. You can make your own graffiti, play with some freinds. Its a video game heaven.
If you're artsy, or want to stop being a slave to the machine (and the nerds who gave this a bad reveiw)..then get JSRF..its not just a game, its a revolution..

The bottom line is this: If you played Jet Grind Radio for the Sega Dreamcast, you'll LOVE JSRF. If you didn't find the gameplay in JGR compelling, or were overly annoyed with its camera, the sequel will more likely than not not change your mind.

That said, JSRF is one of the most visually interesting games to come around in recent memory, and it takes the cel-shading technique pioneered in JGR to new heights. The individual levels are enormous, and the sheer amount of detail is impossible to take in immediately. From a Shinkansen among the skyscrapers in the Shibuya terminal, to the intertwined rollercoasters of Sky Dinosaurian Hill, JSRF is a distinct generation leap in technology forward from anything else out there.

The controls have been refined and simplified somewhat, from JGR - gone are the directional arrow markers for graffiti (and it's not an omission that detracts from the game at *ALL*), and the camera and graffiti buttons have been separated (easily, the best control tweak made). Rails are easier to grind on, but the control scheme can be a little frustrating at times. Halfpipe controls are still quirky, and you'll sometimes find yourself going the wrong way on a rail, and be "stuck", unable to get off it safely.

Still, the minor control issues and finicky camera don't detract from the *experience* of the game much - JSRF is still a fantastic world to explore. The soundtrack is *fabulous* as well, largely done by The Latch Brothers and Wavemaster's own Hideki Naganuma (who should be releasing albums of music independent of videogames, dangit).

Again, the bottom line: If you liked JGR, it's everything taken to the next level. If you didn't like JGR, JSRF isn't going to change you mind.

Personally, I *LOVED* it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing game..., June 9, 2002

This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
This game alone is reason enough to buy an Xbox console people! A virtual city is your playplace, art studio, and fighting ring as you express yourself on walls, buses, pillars, and sewers through graffiti. The music is stunning, (Get "Aisle 10" by Scapegoat Wax now!) the graphics are hip and cartoony, and the gameplay is excellent. A variety of activites are given to you,f rom races, to copycatting moves, to finding someone as they runa way from you, to the classic spraypainting. The moves in the game are pretty simple, a major plus since some Xbox and PS2 games have about 60 moves you can preform with 3 buttons! Each new chapter you venture into has amazing scenery (If you don't believe me at least play the game till you unlock 99th street...its stunning) and best of all you can design your own graffiti to put into the game that you spray on the walls. Besides unlockable characters their are the unlockable spraypaint designs that are totally amazing. Plus there are the multiplayer games which range from a battle-style race, to a spraypaint tag, to a get the most spraypaint up game....buy this game!

4.0 out of 5 stars Grind your way to success, March 6, 2002
By
This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
JSRF is a very fun game. It has some great features which include: Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, HDTV support, Widescreen support, 4-player battles, and killer tunes. This is the sequel to the game that started all of this cel-shading madness that you see in so many games these days. However, no one does it quite like Sega. If you're expecting to push up, down, and around to spray your graffiti like in the original, you can forget about it. JSRF controls like a dream, but to spray your graffiti, you simply press/hold down the spray button as you pass the graffiti points. The graffiti editor is still available to make your own tag-marks for use in the game and most of the characters are back for a second helping as well. If theres anything to gripe about, it's that the camera could use a little work. After playing the game for a long duration, the occasionally jerky camera could make you sick and force you to take a break. All-in-all, a must have for XBox owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent, January 17, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future (Video Game)
By far, this is one of the best Xbox Games around. I bought it, and purchased the soundtrack as well because I loved it so much. This remains one of my favorite games, as I grew up in around grafitti, and that's not something usually included in a video game. The game play is innovative. What other game has such lovingly crafted cell-shading, or allows you to skate AND spraypaint?

It's easy to be immersed in this game. Anyone with a brain can tell you this game is loads of fun. I've spent hours exploring the different parts of town. There are occasional boss battles and encounters with rival grafitti gangs, but the premise of the game is mostly to throw your tags/grafitti up around town as much as possible, and pull off some neat tricks and stunts. Not to mention the fun you'll have spraying the cops. There's even some racing involved, and different tasks to do when in town, especially when you meet up with some of the other "gangs".

Personally, I don't really care for skating games. Tony Hawk gets more and more boring abd redundant each year, the first few were fun, but this is definitely something new. For each new unlockable part of town there is a set of unique challenges. Just about anything you see is accessible. Want to grind up that giant dinosaur? Go right ahead. Ever want to skate across the power lines? Have at it; the world is your oyster. You can literally spend hours just exploring and finding secrets, and looking at all the amazing things going on in town. The dialogue is funny as well.

The graphics are kind of similar to Okami or Legend of Zelda: Windwaker, in that it's cell shaded, but in an almost "Harajuku" style. Bold and vibrant colors, distinct characters with lots of funky accoutrements (like boom boxes, large headphones, funky clothes). Game play is smooth, little or no lag at all, even though this was an Xbox original game.

This isn't a violent game, no blood and guts, but instead this game is purely about sitting down with a controller and having a rewarding experience, without getting too frustrated with puzzles or getting fragged every 30 seconds. This game is lighthearted joy on a disc. It's very appealing, probably to anyone who is into the grafitti subculture/style, reads art & culture magazines like Juxtapoz and Giant Robot, and can appreciate the distinct style. Casual gamers and hardcore gamers alike have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy this treasure of a game.

Regrettably, some people just don't understand it. The people that gave this a 1 in the reviews are probably all inbred, uncultured trash with I.Q.'s under 70.

But you're a smart person, aren't you?
