Pleasant pastime -- part of a witty series, January 22, 2012
This review is from: JUDGE IS REVERSED (Paperback)
The Mr. & Mrs. North series of mysteries (I've read 3) are set in NYC in the early 60/late 50s. They rely on some stereotypes (Mrs. North is not exactly a "dumb broad," but she has difficulty expressing herself cogently & relies on intuition). From the perspective of a 2010s reader, some of the references require some recognition that social norms have changed. Just say to yourself, that's the way it was back then & this book wasn't written to offend. If you like mysteries that focus more on puzzles than on violence per se, these are fine. The Norths are cat lovers but unlike a spate of contemporary mysteries, the cats are not directly involved in solving the mysteries -- which is fine with me. I have cats as pets, too. I like the Cat Who.. mysteries, but that idea has been done to death. Also, there is a hint of Nick & Nora about the Norths, but they are less wealthy & live in a slightly more modern NYC.
These books are great for a quick read. I do wish they were available in some kind of e-forma,t though. The used-book price was right, but the shipping costs made it a bit iffy. I don't understand publishers who don't release out-of-print works in e-format, even if they don't think it's worthwhile to reprint them.
