Buyer beware! JVC dual decks have a long proven history of very poor build quality!,

This review is from: JVC DRMV78B Tunerless DVD Video Recorder & VHS (Electronics)
I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model. They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with only slight cosmetic differences. Search on these item numbers and see for yourself: JVC SR-MV40US * Built Defective, I bought and returned three of these units (12/2007) * Faulty DVD Drive is a known inevitable problem on every unit (11/2007) * Worked well while it worked (10/2007) * Disk Error on most discs after 5 months of owning the unit (08/2007) * No luck with this (06/2007) * Problem unit (05/2007) JVC HRXVC27U (5 1-stars out of 8) * 1yr and 1/2 and it died (02/2005) * Worst home electronic device I've ever owned (03/2006) * Barely outlived the warranty (10/2005) * the J must stand for Junk (05/2005) JVC DRMV5S (8 1-stars out of 16) * Do Not Buy The JVC DRMV5S DVD ... Throwing Mine in the Garbage,

I've had my unit for 8 months, and it has ceased to function entirely. It will not even play a dvd, much less record one. Calling JVC customer support was a waste of my time. As only the parts are warrantied, I will probably end up just throwing the thing out. One thing for sure, I will not be buying anything with the JVC name on it ever again.

After two months this unit would not accept any discs, even discs it had burned itself or store bought DVD's. JVC would not cover it because it was out of the one month warranty. I threw this thing away and will never buy a JVC product again.

One star is too many for this junk,

My story is identical to others here. I bought my unit in January 2008 and I soon had problems with the DVD door not wanting to open. Then just after the 90 day warranty on labor expired in April, the DVD player stopped playing DVDs. At first, I thought it was a problem with the DVDs, but it turns out to be the machine. I just bought this piece of crap and now I have to buy another one. I guarantee you I will never buy anything made by JVC for the rest of my life. I strongly advise others to heed my warning. I usually ignore rants like this, but as you can see, I'm not alone.

I too fall into the catagory of those who wish they had read the reviews first. I purchased mine as a xmas gift in 11/2007. As it was in our bedroom it received very light usage and after duping maybe 3 tapes to dvd and watching a max of 10 DVD's it failed. Of course as luck would have it the 90 day warranty had expired within the week. So I called JVC and explained the entire situation to their customer support. To their credit they did provide an extension for the labor and provided a service location. After waiting about a month for the unit to be returned (the parts were on the boat was the explaination) we used it about 3 times in the next couple of months and guess what, disk unreadable again. Same problem, and this time only parts covered. I paid just around $220 for the purchase and the labor to repair this isn't far off from that mark. So, yes, it's another overpriced VHS machine. I'm going to try and locate the internal DVD drive and replace it myself. I was never a huge fan of JVC, but this hardware has definately turned me sour on them.

DVD video recorder #DR-MV77SUS Had this unit less than 9 months. Viewed about 10 disc when it quit reading disc. Cost over $100. for labor. Now after about 15 months and viewing a few tapes it will not read the disc again. This is the most I ever spent for DVD player or VCR I would says it apiece of junk. Reading the reviews, other people think the same. I've tryed cleaning the disc reader

JVC DR-MV78,
By Howie Zandel "Just so no to JVC" (Chico, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JVC DRMV78B Tunerless DVD Video Recorder & VHS (Electronics)
My wife and I bought two (2) JVC DR-MV78 DVD/VHS Player/Recorder combo about 6 months ago and rarely used either one. Recently our twins started enjoying some educational DVD's and after a month of use, both machines started randomly indicating "No Disk" with some DVDs. Now neither one recognizes ANY DVDs and only play CDs. I called JVC support this morning and they said to buy a DVD cleaning disk and try again. Turns out NEITHER would even recognize the DVD cleaner to allow it to clean in the first place! I ended up cleaning both with a CD cleaner and you guessed it, nadda, zilch. They still would not even recognize the DVD cleaner Warranty only good for 3 months on labor, and yippy skippy, they will cover parts for 1 year. What a waste of time, energy and $$. This is the first review I have ever written and would not have bothered if the JVC tech could have hidden what I perceived to be a "cut your losses pal 'cause you are just _hit otta luck" undertone. For those of you that think negative reviewed are written by the competition, please pull your head out. I will never buy another JVC product ever again and suggest you do the same. Only thing to decide now is what to do with these troubled assets....gotta be a way get these outta my home and into a lovely landfill where they belong. I'm thinking a slow motion "You Tube" recording of my buds and I putting these worthless machines outta there misery with a little JVC skeet practice. BTW - I'll record this event using my 3+ year old casio camera that has been abused in every way possible - dropped, kicked, baked, banged and barfed on by twins without one problem or failure. It amazes my that these JVC units can't even survive a few months of white glove use. It also amazes me that JVC has such a pathetic warranty.
Just so no JVC, no JVC, no JVC. I'm already felling a little better.........

I wish I'd seen these reviews before I bought this lemon. I thought JVC made a quality product - not so. Soon after purchasing, it stopped recording AND playing DVD's, whether home-recorded OR store-bought. It was still under JVC warranty (parts only). It cost me $125 for labor. I had to argue with the extended warranty company for reimbursement of that expense, to which they finally agreed after I contacted the company that sold me the unit. The repair shop replaced the DVD burner, I brought it home and it worked fine - for less than a month, when the same problems arose. It had become an expensive VHS-VCR unit.
The JVC warranty was for a year, after which the extended warranty took over. Rather than repeat the aggravation of the 1st time, I waited until the year was up to try getting it fixed again. Now it's in limbo somewhere. I had to send it, insured & at my expense, to the company that evaluates these issues. A week after it was delivered to them with no contact or response, I called the warranty company. I was told the unit tested defective (duh - I knew that) & that they were "sourcing it for replacement". I'm hoping they replace it with another make. Meanwhile, I have owned this piece of garbage for over a year and have gotten about 3 weeks of use. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
