JVC has a horrible quality/reliability history with dual decks ...,

This review is from: JVC DRMV79B Tunerless 1080p Upconverting DVD Recorder VCR Combo (Electronics)
I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model. They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with only slight cosmetic differences. Search on these item numbers and see for yourself: JVC SR-MV40US * Built Defective, I bought and returned three of these units (12/2007) * Faulty DVD Drive is a known inevitable problem on every unit (11/2007) * Worked well while it worked (10/2007) * Disk Error on most discs after 5 months of owning the unit (08/2007) * No luck with this (06/2007) * Problem unit (05/2007) JVC HRXVC27U (5 1-stars out of 8) * 1yr and 1/2 and it died (02/2005) * Worst home electronic device I've ever owned (03/2006) * Barely outlived the warranty (10/2005) * the J must stand for Junk (05/2005) JVC DRMV5S (8 1-stars out of 16) * Do Not Buy The JVC DRMV5S DVD ... I've had this for a little over a year now and it's been a problem since day one. Sometimes it works fine and others it freezes up and says it can't play the disc or it'll stop in the middle of the recording for no reason. I can't delete programs off my DVR until I've completed recording the whole disc, finalized it and played it back, because there's an even shot that there will be a problem somewhere along the way.

Everything (Bad) you've heard is true...,

Wow...this unit is a disaster. Had one replaced after six months due to freezing, stopping in midst of recording, pixelating playback, etc....replacement unit (unfortunately, same unit) lasted on and off for a year. Had to unplug most all the time and re-plug (and therefore re-setup) just to get it going. Huge disappointment as I have an ancient JVC DVD/VHS burner combo that has been amazing...talk about a workhorse (although VHS capability died a long time ago). Seems like JVC quality has gone downhill through the years. This product almost ("almost") makes the Samsung counterpart look good (Samsung still takes the prize for inferior DVD units).

JVC DVD/VHS Combo Junker,

This item is the worst combo i owned. I got mine at "Sams Club", took it home and tryed it out. The DVD Player plays good but the VHS however is a pise of Junk. The tape moves down and bends the bottom of the tape with some plastic pice that was in it before it goes onto the seconed wheel. Plus, if i tryed to play a copy VHS the sound goes out of wack. It's bad enough a orgional gets original and the picture moves up and down but this is crazy. If you won't to buy a better combo, then don't buy JVC stuff. They are not vary good machines.

The Good and the Bad,

I've had three JVC Combo DVD recorders, two DR-MV79B's and one DR-MV7SU, and though they're easy to use and work well (I especially like the "thumbnail" image you see of programs you've recorded), EACH ONE has failed within two years. In one case, the drawer would not stay OPEN long enough to insert the disk, in the other case the drawer would not stay CLOSED long enough to read the disk, and in the third, it simply stopped reading DVDs (though it still plays CDs). The two newer 79B's were repairable (and had to be repaired more than once), but the MV7SU was not.
In contrast, my Sony GX-300 DVD recorder, though much more expensive and not as easy to use, has not given any trouble.

JVC stole $200 from me and gave me junk. I can't believe companies can rip you off like this. First: It only records up to six hours a disk, all others record up to ten hours. SECOND: it won't play any of the disks I recorded and FINALIZED in a different player. I have many of these disks. THIRD: the copy protection detector won't let me record anything off of my cable company's movie channels. SO I PAID 200 DOLLARS FOR THIS PIECE OF TRASH THAT WON'T RECORD ANYTHING AND WON'T PLAY MY DVD'S. I DEFINATELY WILL GET MY MONEY BACK OR I WILL SUE THIS COMPANY.

Don't Buy,

This is the 2nd JVC DVD recorder that I've purchased within the last year. The other was an earlier model. Both went bad quickly. This one lasted less than 2 weeks. It freezes during playback, turns off, then it won't turn on again until you let it sit for about 15 minutes. I'll be returning it to the Base Exchange today and won't buy another JVC.

This DVD/VCR Combo Recorder deck has become an important part of my production studio. It has many recording options which is of high importance to me. I didn't need the TV tuner so it's nice they have a cheaper model that doesn't include it. One very cool aspect is the HDMI output. Once I get the proper equipment, I'll be able to capture high quality material through this connection. Until then, however, I'm having to run through a camcorder to get the video into the computer. That's where the one major downside of this deck for me comes in. There is a DV In port on the front which is great, but it's only an In port. It can't output through that port. A lot of hassle would be avoided if it could. That's the reason for docking it a star. Other than that, I couldn't be more pleased with this deck and all the functions it can perform.
