Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Proving once again that good things come in small packages, the JVC FS-Y1 audio/video system comes loaded with valuable features for the discerning music and movie fan. The system includes a pair of full-range speakers (18 watts x 2) with 3.19-inch cone drivers, giving listeners the means to enjoy high-quality stereo sound when playing CDs, CD-R/RWs, MP3s, and WMA files. At the same time, it also displays crisp DVD video--with DVD, DVD-R and DVD-RW, VCD, SVCD, and JPEG compatibility--making it a nice system for the living room, bedroom, and anywhere else you want to watch movies. It even converts Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks into two-channel audio playback so listeners can enjoy high-end movie soundtracks (along with DVD-Audio discs) through the stereo speakers. The end result is immersive audio and video that almost, but not quite, re-creates the surround-sound theater experience (a process abetted by the 3D Phonic circuitry).

Users will enjoy a superior DVD picture thanks to the progressive scan output, which displays twice the scan lines of an interlaced DVD player. Other DVD features include multi-angle playback, zoom, slow motion, and random and repeat play. The system also comes with an AM/FM tuner (with 30 FM and 15 AM presets), a sleep timer, and an alarm with three presets. To further its usefulness as an alarm, the FS-Y1 boasts a "wakeup volume" function, a handy add-on for slow risers that gradually increases the alarm volume as you open your eyes. Meanwhile, signal transfer is coordinated by the 10-bit/54 MHz video DAC and 192 kHz/24-bit audio DAC.

The FS-Y1 connects to a TV through the component video output (for the best possible picture), though it also includes S-video and composite outputs as alternatives. Plus, it comes with an optical digital output that lets you connect the DVD player to a 5.1-channel receiver to enjoy genuine surround sound.

What's in the Box
FS-Y1 CD/DVD player, two speakers, remote control, user's manual.

Other features include a 192-kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter and 10-bit/54MHz video D/A converter, a display dimmer, electronic bass and treble tone controls, random and repeat program modes, and 3D Phonic for creating a surround sound effect from two-channel sources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing little system, January 5, 2006

This review is from: JVC FS-Y1 Component Audio/Video System with DVD/CD Player and AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
I have a large 100 watt stereo setup that consists of five JVC components and two pairs of speakers. I bought this system as something I could play easily when I wasn't doing "serious" listening.

It was a surprise. Not only do the little 3.19 inch speakers give adequate volume for casual listening, they also sound great. JVC's circuitry gives very reasonable bass, along with clear highs. You would think you were at least listening to two-way speakers with six inch woofers, not these small cubes.

I have not tried, and have no plans for using its DVD capability as yet, so I can't review that feature. I can vouch that the audio is very good, the unit controls and the remote are easy to use with a logical set-up, and the entire system has the feel and look of high quality.

My only disappointment is that it has audio "in" RCA jacks, but not audio "out". So I can't connect to a recording deck. For me, this is minor.

Review the features and specs to see if this system might meet your needs. I have been very pleased with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, beware of player noise, May 3, 2006

Sound quality is excellent, ton of features (plays almost every music format there is, not to mention DVDs), compact and aesthetically pleasing. However, the unit itself is very noisy during disc play. A loud high pitch whirring noise from the CD motor can be heard over low to medium volumes. You'd have to pretty much set to high volumes when playing music or movies if you want to drown out any of the noise coming from the CD unit. If you can live with the noise, this is a good buy, nothing else compares when it comes to the available features. But beware, the inability of the unit to control disc noise may be why it's so affordable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too noisy for it's own good., November 9, 2006

Pros:

1) Sound Quality;

2) Programable Volume level for wake-up alarm setting;

2) Compact Design;

Cons:

1) Remote is too complicated for ease of use;

2) Display setting reverts back to system default anytime a button is pressed which requires the display to change (example: I set the display to show the time while a CD is being played. I then decide to turn up the volume but in doing so, the volume level is displayed while the volume is adjusted. Once the display does back, instead of going back to the time (which is what I set it to prior to changing the volume) it goes back to showing the CD playback info (track, playback time, etc);

3) AND THIS LAST REASON IS THE REASON WHY i WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE OF THESE... playback of CDs and DVDs is mechanically noisy. The volume has to be set on at least 20 for you to overpower the sound of the spinning CD/DVD. It makes for an uncomfortable drifting off to sleep.

In my opinion the CONS outweigh the PROS so look elsewhere for a better product. This one will be a disappointment.
