Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The JVC FSG5 micro system may come in a relatively small package, but it packs a big sound thanks to its 180 watts (90 watts x 2) of total system power. The stereo's generous output, when teamed with its pair of two-way bass-reflex speakers and such sound-enhancing functions as Active Hyper Bass, delivers a rich, full-bodied sound that resonates in all but the largest rooms. The FSG5 also boasts a collection of features that stand above many similarly priced micro systems, such as MP3 playback (on CD-R/RW), a five-disc CD changer, and most significantly, a USB input that connects to either a Mac or PC, letting users listen to audio content stored on a computer's hard drive. The computer connection offers a great way to enjoy your digital music catalogue through something other than your PC's tinny built-in speakers.

The CD player's most notable functions include 32-track programming, random play, and repeat play, along with standard song skip/search and play/pause functions. Should listeners tire of MP3 and CD playback, they can turn to the digital AM/FM tuner, which offers 30 FM and 15 AM presets for easy channel navigation. And befitting a system that's commonly located in the bedroom, the FSG5 even includes a clock, an alarm (with three presets), and a sleep timer. Listeners can also dim the display should it prove too bright when they're trying to sleep.

Additional features include the aforementioned Active Hyper Bass, which enriches the bass response and clarifies the vocals; a Sound Turbo button that boosts the audio energy; electronic bass and treble controls for customizing the audio; and a front auxiliary input for connecting to such devices as portable iPods and MP3 players. The bass-reflex speakers, meanwhile, feature 3.94-inch full-range cone woofers and 1.62-inch cone tweeters.

As with all JVC micro systems, the FSG5 carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent small office system, July 20, 2005
By
This review is from: JVC FSG5 180-Watt Micro Audio System with 5-Disc CD Changer and Digital AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
I purchased the JVC FSG5 audio system for my office. It is precisely what I was looking for at the price I wanted to spend. The system is attractively designed -- it does not look junky or cheap. It is loaded with features including an AM/FM digital stereo radio with 30 FM and 15 AM available station presets, 5-disc CD changer (which can also play MP3 discs), and two 2-way bass reflex speakers. The system also comes with a very complete remote control that allows control of everything the system can do from across the room. Also included are simple AM and FM antennae and two AA batteries for the remote control.

One really can't judge the sound of a system by reading about it. I went to a local electronics store to see it in person and judge the sound quality with a CD. For an inexpensive system the sound quality was very good, and it actually sounds a lot better within the small confines of my office. The default sound setting is a little weak, so I found the best sound was obtained by increasing the bass a little bit. I have the system set up on the top of a bookcase, so if the speakers were placed on carpeting the bass would likely be deeper. There is a "turbo boost" button that will primarily boost bass for a rapid adjustment if desired. A headphone jack is available for headphone usage.

The radio works fine. There are not many quality FM radio stations in my area, so I play CDs. The CD changer works great. I have played it for hours day after day without problems. Changing CDs is quick and easy -- there are five separate trays that are individually ejected to load/remove CDs. Content on CDs can be played at random if desired but only for individual CDs -- it will not randomize music playback from all 5 discs.

One unique feature the system has is a USB jack in the front of the receiver allowing playback of audio/sound to a computer equipped with USB. This allows you to play audio sound through a USB input on your computer. The downside (sadly) is you cannot do the reverse -- you cannot connect a portable mp3 player as an input to the audio system to play music through the audio system speakers. This would have been a great feature, but it doesn't work that way. It also seems a little odd to have the input on the front of the receiver, although for temporary hook-ups it would be useful.

The receiver has a built-in clock and timer allowing programmed operation. There is no battery back-up, though, so if power is interrupted you will have to reset the clock.

About the only downside to this system is the receiver is quite deep (16-1/4 inches), so it sticks out a little bit if you put it in/on a bookcase.

JVC has a reputation for high quality in audio, and this system comes with a full 1-year warranty. I have been using this system now for over a year in my office, primarily to play CDs, and I have had no problems whatsoever (unlike other reviewers). It is perfect for any small environment like an office, small living room, bedroom, or dorm room. If JVC has overcome the CD player problems reported by other reviewers, this is a very nice compact audio system for the money spent. If you are looking for that kind of audio system, I definitely recommend that you give it a look and listen.

This review is from: JVC FSG5 180-Watt Micro Audio System with 5-Disc CD Changer and Digital AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
Great appearance and sound, JVC has produced a nice sounding unit. Speakers look as great as they sound, no problem handling bass at loud levels. Tuner is very easy to use, USB input works flawlessly. Now the bad news, the CD mechanism breaks down and is unable to read any CD, whether store bought or MP3 burned. First unit died after three weeks, the replacement lasted five. CD player mechanical design is unable to handle light use. Will think twice about buying a JVC again...

2.0 out of 5 stars CHEAP, September 14, 2005

This review is from: JVC FSG5 180-Watt Micro Audio System with 5-Disc CD Changer and Digital AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
I had this for 6 days and very randomly it kept saying that there was no disk in the player. The sound is awesome but the cd changer is VERY flimsy and could break very easily but what I am most upset about is that the player won't play any of my cd's what so ever burnt or not.
