5.0 out of 5 stars JVC D-ILA 52g886
I bought this tv from one call. First off, www.onecall.com was very pleasant to deal with. Great guy on the phone, Ralph, gave me a fair price. Even came down a bit to match his competitor tvauthority. This TV is pretty stunning, with some problems that DLP have with the audio sync and game sync lag I was weary of getting a Samsung DLP. 2.0 out of 5 stars Very poor customer service
I'm tempted to publish the long letter I wrote to JVC customer service regarding their lack therof, but I will spare you. I'm perfectly happy with the picture quality of this set, but I have two problems with it. The first is that the cooling fan noise is unacceptable, especially considering this is an audio/video device. We're not always watching loud stuff. When I am...

Plus the chance of some people seeing rainbows and getting headaches, I went to look at a different technology.

I feel that LCD stuck pixel would be a pain to deal with, shelling out this kind of money with some bad quality, anyways this model has 3 chips for color generation, which is gives a more broad color spectrum, you can get pretty close to true colors.

The little blue light is a great touch, really pleasing looking bezel. This technology is the blend of LCD and DLP, same used in the philips LCoS. All the good things and none of the same basic issues. The auto color management could use some work as it makes the reds too red, but thats what calibration is for. You get good angle clarity and sharp edges. The auto HDMI detection switches content to the best format, even regular tv looks the same.

Great buy, cost the same as DLP and cheaper than LCD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still The Envy Of My HD-Owning Cohorts, March 9, 2006

This review is from: JVC HD52G886 52 inch HDILA Rear Projection HD Ready TV (Electronics)
I got this set a little over a year ago and couldn't be happier. I wanted to wait awhile to write the review, because people are overly-biased when they have recently purchased a product. When I was out shopping around, I viewed numerous models and types of HDs. I wasn't impressed with the DLPs, and the LCDs didn't really capture my attention either. Plasmas were still a little too costly, so the salesperson showed me this set.

I was blown away with how incredibly bright the display was. This particular retailer only handles higher-end models, so the sets I got to compare it to were some of the better models available. Side-by-side there was no comparison to my set. Even competing against plasmas, I still chose this one.

The picture is bright and crisp, the viewing angle is unbelievable for a rear-projection, the stock speakers are exceptionally clear and sufficiently loud, and there are more than enough inputs on this model. Another thing I really like about his set is that you don't experience any glare. My living room is really bright, and I can watch TV in the middle of the day without drawing the blinds or anything. Also, my standard broadcast Dish Network looks great on it. I haven't jumped on the HD bandwagon yet, but I purchased a relatively inexpensive HD-Upconvert DVD player ($150) for it (using the HDMI interface), and I couldn't believe how incredibly spectacular the picture was as compared to a regular DVD player. The only gripe I have about this set is that the blacks aren't as black as I'd like, but that is to be expected with a rear-projection TV.

As for the allegations from particular people that say the fan noise is too loud, I suggest they have a JVC tech come and check that out, because I have had absolutely no problem in that area. I have a relatively small living room, so one would think I would be able to hear the fan. I can ALMOST hear it when the TV is muted, but that's about it.

So 15 months later, I am still the envy of my Hi-Def-Bigscreen-owning buddies. I have a friend that's a die-hard plasma fan, and my set shut him up about the ills of rear-projections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great picture for a great price, January 29, 2006
This review is from: JVC HD52G886 52 inch HDILA Rear Projection HD Ready TV (Electronics)
The 52G886 offers a superior picture to LCD rear projection sets in the same size category. DLPs are fairly similar, but unfortunately, some people get headaches from the periodic bursts of rainbow color caused by the moving parts in that type of set. Although I have heard of issues with JVC customer service, I had little problem reaching them when I had a question. In fact, I thought there was a problem with the set, had a tech come out, and he showed me what I was doing wrong. The only downside I see to the set is that the remote does not let you choose your input directly, but rather you must cycle through all of the available inputs. This is not an issue if you use an AV system to feed your signals to the set however.

4.0 out of 5 stars I work at a store that sells them., January 25, 2006

I work at a store that sells them and day after day I sit and watch the TV's comparing them. The first thing that struck me about this set was it's overwhelming brightness. The clarity, contrast and color were stunning. I talked the guys who sell TV's there to move one out with the Plasma only section. Sure enough customers were buying this over the more expensive plasmas. The clarity, brightness, contrast all exceeded Plasma sets. The color was on a par with the Plasma sets. Now, the weakness is off angle viewing. It has much better off angle viewing then DLP's but not as good as LCD panel or Plasma. I'm picky on off angle viewing and would never buy a DLP but would buy this. It truely has a better picture then plasma, you must see it to believe it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very poor customer service, January 24, 2006

This review is from: JVC HD52G886 52 inch HDILA Rear Projection HD Ready TV (Electronics)
When I am listening to the news or other "regular" shows at low volume, I can hear the drone of the fans all the way across the room. JVC has no remedy.

I discovered that there is no output signal from the output ports. No digital optical, no s-video and no composite video, nada. Following multiple calls to JVC and an in-home visit from a JVC authorized technician, no one has figured this out. What really ticks me off is the lack of interest on the part of the JVC techys to track down the problem. One of them claimed that he was going to attempt to simulate conditions on a TV in the JVC lab, but he didn't have an optical cable for the hookup. The cable has been on backorder for the past ten days. That's kind of scary. I guess it's too much trouble for him to walk into the local audio store to buy a cable like I did, and it still doesn't prevent him from testing the other outputs. It appears that this may be a problem with all of these units. (please reply to this message if you have info on this) It looks like I will have to depend on the kindness of my retailer to take back the set so that I can get another brand, hopefully from someone with actual customer service.
