Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Keep enjoying the convenience and affordability of VHS tape recording and playback with JVC's full-featured yet affordable HR-VP690U. The hi-fi stereo deck features JVC's Super-VHS Quasi Playback (SQPB) feature, which allows the VCR to recognize and play tapes recorded in the Super VHS format (albeit at standard-VHS quality). This recorder is ready for action--just take it out and plug it in. A color, multilingual onscreen menu simplifies setup and operation, while Instant Review permits fast, simple playback of timer-recorded programs.

The HR-VP690U features a hi-fi, 4-head design that gives you crystal-clear pause and slow-motion effects, and its dual-azimuth construction uses 2 pairs of recording heads rather than one, each optimized for a specific mode (one for SP recording, the other for EP). Pro-Cision 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode. If you route the stereo output to an audio/video receiver, you can even enjoy 4-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded cassettes.

Picture Control lets you change the VCR's four picture-technology settings: "Auto/Normal" enables the Active Video Calibration System; "Soft" reduces image coarseness when viewing overplayed tapes; "Edit" minimizes degradation during editing (recording and playback); and "Sharp" gives you clearer, sharper-edged pictures.

The HR-VP690U comes with front audio/video jacks enabling easy access for connecting camcorders, video games, or an extra VCR. One-year, 8-event express programming and a full-function remote complete the package. The remote control's Shuttle Plus feature gives you the complete tape-accessing flexibility of a traditional jog/shuttle control, plus features like fingertip control of frame advance, variable slow motion, multiple-speed search, and Index Search--all in one easy-to-use button on the remote control.

What's in the Box VCR, remote control, remote batteries, an RF coaxial video cable, a user's manual, and warranty information.

1.0 out of 5 stars Manufacturers Defect, January 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC HR-VP690U Hi-Fi VCR, Black (Electronics)
I will never buy a JVC product again! My VCR quit working one day while not even turned on and JVC service wanted to charge me a $40 diagnostic fee plus another $135 to fix the problem. The units are defective due to excessive integrated circuit heat which causes stress failure in the control module. It has nothing to do with power surge failure as is evidenced by the internal fuse which stays intact. JVC engineering has done a great job creating defective products which they will not back. My advice: no matter how cheap they get - spend your money on another brand!

Just bought the JVC VCR at Sears, along with my new JVC TV.There almost giving away these VCR's.Everyone wants DVD players,so you can almost buy a new VCR for under 70bucks,with everything you can imagine on them.I remember the first VCR's in the 70's that cost over oneThousand, with no remote.I guess VCR's will become the 8track tape player in the future.

The problem with a DVD player is - you can't record on it. My mother's VCR won't record anymore either, so this is just the thing! Now she can see whatever she wants - when she wants....
