Good Combo VCR / DVD,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JVC HRXVC12S Progressive Scan DVD Player and VCR Combo (Electronics)
I bought this as a present for my girlfriend because she had a bunch of old video tapes without a vcr to play them on and her dvd player was terrible (and she lost the remote to it). I shopped around and found this to be the best mix of quality / price.
After using it a few times, it does everything as advertised. Auto-tracking on the tapes was fast and great. We haven't had one that looked bad yet. The remote is super easy to use, and it's very simple to switch between dvd and vcr. The picture's clear (or as clear as a vhs / dvd can be) and the audio is good. When rewinding vhs tapes, sometimes it makes a really loud noise (to be expected when rewinding at high speeds), but it's never damaged any tapes. The only other possible con is the lack of a built in timer for vhs recording, but come on, get with the times! If you're looking to record programs, get a dvr! The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is I am used to blu-ray / HD quality so I can't justify giving this 5 stars. If I were in the market for another dvd/vcr, I would buy this again.

Solidly built,

This review is from: JVC HRXVC12S Progressive Scan DVD Player and VCR Combo (Electronics)
First let me say the only reason I bought this was because I wanted a silver DVD/VCR combo that wasn't "cheap" like a Sylvania from Kmart. There are over a dozen black combo units out there today but it's surprisingly hard to find them in any other finish. The first one I tried was a Philips but it turned out to be plasticky, flimsy and too shallow to sit my DVR on top of it. This JVC looks and feels solidly built--heavy, with a metal case over 10 inches deep, on top of which my Explorer 8300HDC DVR fits nicely. My only complaints are that it lacks optical digital audio output (it just has coaxial, like everything else in this price range) and the color is darker than my DVR (and darker than the Philips unit it replaced). The color does, however, match my LG TV (LG 30FS4D / 30FS4D / 30FS4D 30 Super Slim Direct View Integrated HDTV).
If you don't mind black you can probably do better than this JVC (which also comes in black), but if you're looking for silver (and not second-hand), and you don't need a tuner or DVD recording features, this is probably the best available without paying 50% more.

JVC has a horrible quality/reliability history with dual decks ...,

This review is from: JVC HRXVC12S Progressive Scan DVD Player and VCR Combo (Electronics)
I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model. They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with only slight cosmetic differences. Search on these item numbers and see for yourself: JVC SR-MV40US * Built Defective, I bought and returned three of these units (12/2007) * Faulty DVD Drive is a known inevitable problem on every unit (11/2007) * Worked well while it worked (10/2007) * Disk Error on most discs after 5 months of owning the unit (08/2007) * No luck with this (06/2007) * Problem unit (05/2007) JVC HRXVC27U (5 1-stars out of 8) * 1yr and 1/2 and it died (02/2005) * Worst home electronic device I've ever owned (03/2006) * Barely outlived the warranty (10/2005) * the J must stand for Junk (05/2005) JVC DRMV5S (8 1-stars out of 16) * Do Not Buy The JVC DRMV5S DVD ... High Quality Item,

There are very few DVD/VCR player combo units that are now available. Most are from lower quality brands like Magnavox, Memorex or Sylvania. None of these compare to this JVC unit. The JVC DVD/VCR is a very High Quality Item. It takes about 5 minutes to hook up and you are ready to go. The picture is beautiful and the sound is great. If you do not need a Blu-ray player and you still have VCR tapes to play, then this is the DVD/VCR player combo for you. I highly recommend it!

Perfect in everyway!,
This review is from: JVC HRXVC12S Progressive Scan DVD Player and VCR Combo (Electronics)
Very grateful! Couldn't find this item in the stores (all out of stock) and I refused to get another brand, as I trust this brand so much. Never had a problem with my previous JVC dvd/vhs player, I just wore it out after 10+ years. JVC is a great brand.
Overall transaction thru amazaon was fab! Never disappointed!

We cannot get this VCR to work. Both my husband and daughter have had no luck setting it up to play or record let alone both. It seems as if it would be easy to use if it worked. I can't help but feel that we are missing something. Since we bought it online, we don't feel as if there is a customer service rep who can walk us through the set-up or answer technical questions.

I already own one of these and so I knew that this would be a perfect gift. However the shipping part of this deal was disastrous! It took nearly a month for me to revieve it and by that time the birthday had come and gone...took all the fun out of giving such a great gift.
