I HIGHLY recommend these headphones!
Brandon M
The bass doesn't have a deep reach like say...Beyers DT1350s (which I previously owned) but it does have impact bass without effecting the midrange.
The smiley face on Amazon means A to Z -- CRAZY!
To me they are very comfortable and sound GREAT!

NOTE: I'm not an audiophile, but I do know some basic information.

I have been keeping up with head-fi and the recent (well was recent) flood of cheap, great sounding headphones and IEMs. Of all the different brands I have seen, JVC seems to be the one company who knows how to create excellent sound for a cheap price. I was loving my s400's until I finally decided to buy a pair of s500's.

All I have to say is WOW. These headphones sound great!! The bass and sub-bass makes a great impact while keeping the detail. The mids are not as prominent as some might want (this seems to be the reoccurring problem with JVC), but for me they are just fine. The highs are where these shine; they are crisp, detailed and not harsh. The major flaw with these headphones is the comfort of the stock pads and the weak soundstage. Without mods, these sound great. But these headphones REALLY shine when modifications are made.

My mod set up:
1. HM5 pads over the stack pads
2. The ring mod to keep the HM5 pads in place
3. Taped ports for increased bass
4. Stuffed stock pads with cotton and paper towel for increased bass
(You can check out the thread on head-fi for more information on these mods.)

With the HM5 mods, the detail is take to a whole different level. These also solve the soundstage problem, increasing it by a lot and adding a more airy sound. The downfall with these pads is the decrease in bass, and it is decreased by a considerable amount. The stuffed pads mod and taped ports mod helped with this A LOT. With this current set up, I don't think I will need a different pair of headphones again. They sound absolutely awesome, ESPECIALLY for the price (these can compete with headphones 2x-4x the price)!

Bought the headphones after reading all the reviews. I have Shure 1440, Beyer 880, and Shure SE215 IEMs. I was looking for a portable, relatively low cost headphones for traveling/around town that had a fun sound signature. These import-only JVC fit the bill perfectly. I would highly recommend running these for several days to allow the sound to settle in (burn-in). The sound out of the box is less than desirable. Even after 6-8 hours, the sound changes quite a bit.

The bass doesn't have a deep reach like say...Beyers DT1350s (which I previously owned) but it does have impact bass without effecting the midrange. Don't get it mistaken, this isn't going to color all your songs with massive bass some some headphones do but when you put in dubstep or hip/hop, the bass will be there in full force. The trebles are decent and can be harsh to some depending on your source. A little EQing can settle that down but it's just shy of sibilant for me. Not a big of an issue.

The bad would have to be the mid/high range. Particularly what you'd want for female voices, violins, and rock music. When playing those genres, most lead will seem recessed in the back of the stage. These do great in blues/blues-rock, acoustic, folk, dubstep, and hip hop.

For the price I paid from Mugen Mart, it's a purchase I can be happy about. I gave it 4 star because it didn't come with a carry case and it doesn't do it all well. Value-wise, it's one of those few headphones that can't be beat for the price (unless you're talking clearance sales on a more pricey set).

I'm not an audio professional, but I have listened to a lot of different types/brands of speakers and headphones. These produce accurate sound, much better than others that cost twice as much or more. By accurate, I mean highs, mids, bass, clarity, loudness... basically true to the source. Being that the drivers are made of carbon, they're supposed to have a really long break-in period, so I wasn't expecting such amazing range straight out of the box. These can go deep now, but if they do get noticeably better with age, I will have to buy another set and leave them in a safe in case something happens to this pair. Not that I feel they will break with regular wear, as they seem solidly built. Also, they are very comfortable for long-time listening.

I have seen other reviews saying they were uncomfortable. To me they are very comfortable and sound GREAT! JVC left a deep impression on me with these affordable cans. Also received quickly.

I have several sets of headphones in all price levels, but all of them are open air type. I wanted to get a semi-closed design pair to isolate my ears from outside noises and so that my wife doesn't get annoyed by my loud music while she sleeps.
Did some research on these and decided to give them a try. $40 is not a big risk. Well, I am glad to say that these cans are awesome! They sound better than Beats Solos for less than 1/4 the price! Like another reviewer said, the eq curve is v-shaped, meaning the vocals are a little subdued, but you will get used to this after a little while. I highly recommend these headphones.
