I'd recently been looking for a 37" - 42" TV for my basement to be used occasionally, mostly for sports. It's using HDMI with my cable box.

My 42" JVC JLC42BC3000 arrived today from Amazon ($509) and my initial impressions are happy ones. I'd seen a video review on youtube but not much other info. The Amtran build is solid and the sound is great.

I wasn't sure if 60Kh or 120Kh would matter but preferred it if possible. I had considered the LG 42LK520 which seems like a great TV but over $80 more. The 42" and 47" JVCs are 120Kh.

My other TVs are a 47" VIZIO XVT3D474SV and a 32" LG 32LD350.

Bottom line, I really like this TV. The build quality of the case is excellent (seems stronger than my Vizio), no flex at all when plugging it in, no flashlighting and the picture quality is terrific. I can't see any problem pixels. There is a bit of lag when using the cable guide and a bit of lag when changing inputs. No ethernet or apps but lots of input options. Audio is really great. If SRS TruVolume is turned off, the overall volume drops significantly but it sounds great with both StudioSurround HD and TruVolume on. Very happy with this TV so far!

Consumer Reports magazine recommended this tv.(Dec.2011 issue)I retired from the quality control field,so i do my homework prior to purchases.
Most of all,is the built in sound bar across the bottom.Very easy to hook up,and the sound is great. You dont need to turn the Vol.button up high to hear, like other customer reviews have noted with frustration on other tvs.(wonderful for us older folks)

This tv has many good reviews across the internet, and for good reason. No matter how picky you are, this tv performs.

1) The picture quality is outstanding. May not be the absolute best, but it performs as well as, or better in some cases, than most high-end Sony HDTVs (generally, what I've found to be the best tv line for picture quality) in the 40"-42" range. The picture controls are vast, so you can make your picture look however you want. Great contrast abilities combined with numerous brightness options. Above average color controls. Good amount of environmental controls...though the ambient lighting sensor doesn't impress me much, but I don't really care if my tv adjusts its display based on the amount of light in the room.

2) This has the best audio quality out of the 3 tvs I actually brought home to test. I chose the 3 tvs because reviews indicated they had good audio performance along with good picture quality. I'm personally convinced that front-firing speakers cannot be outdone, as this tv has...and it sounds great at high volumes. Plus, the "audio" mode in this tv actually let's me play Pandora through my TiVo while shutting off the display portion so that I can use the tv as speakers. Don't believe the hype for a tv that has rear-firing or down-firing speakers. Some down-firing sets sound decent, but they always sound like you're in a metal box...while rear-firing sets are virtually useless if you care about good quality audio.

Whether this set costs 600 or 700, it's worth it. I've always been a huge fan of Sony tvs (generally), but this JVC puts them to shame in terms of picture/audio quality for the money. If you're looking for bells and whistles, this set is probably not for you...it doesn't have internet, or feed you soup when you're sick. And I only rate this tv based on using it as tv, not as a monitor/display for computer or games. I think anyone could be happy with this set.

ANOTHER UPDATE: After 2 years of owning this TV, everything works as it should. Couldn't be happier.

UPDATE: After six months owning this TV it is still working perfectly and I haven't found any other flaws in its function or design.

Initial Review:
I'm very happy with this TV and before going into the normal attributes of the TV I thought I should put out a quick word of advice: If you use it for an external computer monitor OR gaming you must turn "Game Mode" ON. If you don't there will be a lag when you type, move the mouse, or play games (in my case, XBox 360). I can see people setting it up, noticing this lag and immediately giving it a 1 star review, which it does not deserve. This is my first HDTV, so maybe this is obvious to experienced users, but it wasn't to me.

The picture looks wonderful and everything is really easy to set-up. I have watched Netflix (through Xbox), played Xbox games, and used it as an external monitor for my computer. Using it as an external monitor you might have to change the display settings to a lower resolution in order to make the text bigger on the screen. I didn't, but I sit fairly close. Picture: 5 stars.

Menu on the TV is simple to use, as is the remote. The remote isn't backlit but what can you expect from the remote that comes with the TV. Ease of use: 5 stars.

The sound is good due to the dedicated sound bar at the bottom; you don't need to use an external system with this for normal use. Sound: 4 stars (Better than most)

Overall I am very happy and recommend this TV to other buyers. I should mention I have only owned the TV for a day so as far as reliability goes, especially after the 1 year manufacturer warranty expires, only time will tell.
