I have had the JVC KT-SR2000 with Sirius service for about 6 weeks now. It is a lot of fun and provides constant variety while driving on a long commute. But the ideal I had envisioned about satellite radio did not come to fruition.

PLUSES:

5.0 out of 5 stars Just installed in car, January 16, 2005
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
Chose Sirius for content reasons, after shopping extensively for Sirius PNP receivers, chose the JVC unit for the following reasons:

-- small size "PDA style" -- can fit in your pocket
-- super bright/readable screen -- crisp 'red LED' on black background
-- wanted a second generation receiver from mfr who had first gen experience (JVC 2000 supersedes 1000)
-- reputation for very good antenna
-- rumor that soon-to-be release boombox will be superb

I was not disappointed. Installed in car with antenna on dash and experienced very few drop outs despite less than optimal antenna location. Did notice a bit of hiss with the integral FM modulator, so opted for direct connection to my "MP3" Aux input on the car stereo... beautiful sound with the direct connection. Screen indeed readable in bright sunlight. Channel/category switch on the unit a bit clunky (though buttons on remote are fine = "real buttons")... other than this I'm highly satisfied. The 18 presets on the unit more than enough for me and suction cup dash/window mount that comes with the car kit seems bulletproof and very tight (especially vs. double-stick tape approach with other units). Nice thing about the PDA form factor when used in the car is that it's easy to slip in your pocket if leaving the car in a theft-prone area. Unit runs warm but nowhere near as hot as I thought it might given other online comments.

Sirius programming seems a bit more oriented to older demographic vs. XM. I liked (1) extensive news including PBS/BBC/PRI/World, (2) reggae/tropical/vacation channels, (3) tighter music genres in general (vs. more thematic on XM)... and in 2006 am looking forward to Howard Stern's move from FM to Sirius. Only programming on XM not on Sirius that I miss is MSNBC. Also note that Sirius traffic/weather is slightly less convenient since they put two cities on each channel, cycling coverage through each.

Looking forward to getting the boombox for the JVC KT-SR2000 soon... this appears to be simple, clean aesthetically (would look ok at home) and has a bass-boost capability... a/c adapter and antenna with 20' cord included.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is this as good as it gets?, March 26, 2005

I have had the JVC KT-SR2000 with Sirius service for about 6 weeks now. It is a lot of fun and provides constant variety while driving on a long commute. But the ideal I had envisioned about satellite radio did not come to fruition.

PLUSES:

- Excellent selection of stations, including many sub-genres of Rock, Jazz, Classical, News, etc.

- Easy to set up with the car kits

- Compact size head unit

MINUSES:

- Sound quality through the FM transmitter is terrible. The music stations sound a little better than AM, and the news/talk stations sound worse than AM (I am listening to this through a Lexus OEM stereo). If I compare to my iPod with Belkin FM transmitter, there is no comparison - the iPod sounds as good or better than any FM station.

- Sound quality through the home kit, with direct connection to home stereo system, is also poor. There is little dynamic range, the music tracks sound compressed, the bass is muddy, and the highs are truncated.

- The music stations have annoying DJ's in between songs - what for? Everything I need to know (artist, song title) is right there on the screen. Get rid of the DJ's, eliminate their salaries, and instead lower the monthly service charge!

Maybe the in-dash Sirius units sound better? I hope so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality, June 24, 2005

I recently bought this radio, primarily for my car, but also got the home dock. It was easy to set up and install both types of kit. Unfortunately, the sound quality was very poor in both configurations. The FM modulator for the car was pretty close to hopeless. It only has maybe 10 channels. I found one that was free, luckily. But even with a clear channel, the sound had a terrible hiss, that went up and down in volume at apparent random even when everything was stationary. The occupied channels actually worked about as well (still lots of hiss)- except when the underlying channel broke through. Even disregarding the hiss, the sound quality on the music was not very good.

I thought the problem was probably with the FM modulator, so I tried it in the home dock, connected to a *very good* home hi-fi system. The hiss was gone, but the sound quality was completely unacceptable. For whatever reason, this particular receiver doesn't like the compression artifacts very much. Satellite radio quality is, AT BEST, about like an average MP3, with highly compressed signals (some channels better than others). This receiver seemed to exacerbate the effect, and it sounded a lot like a tin can and string "telephone" most of the time. It was vert irritating very quickly.

The form factor (about the size of a modern walkie-talkie) was fine, and pretty easy to fit in the car. It also seemed to be pretty solidly built. But all of that is completely moot if it doesn't work properly.

I returned the receiver and both kits the next day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great unit, fantastic FM transmitter...., February 20, 2005
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
I chose this model because it came with the only magnetic mounting antenna I could find. It's a breeze to switch to other vehicles. All the other units I looked at had an adhesive mounted antenna (for cars), too permanent for me and I have 3 cars.
The best part about this unit is that when you attach the included FM antenna wire to the thing (like it says in the manual)it can be picked up by every radio on all 3 stories of my house and on my walkman in my backyard.
I was initially worried about getting sat. radio because I like listening to my walkman while out working in the yard. The transmitter reaches all over my yard great and I can even tune in on a radio out in my shed with the unit on in my house. I keep it in an upstairs bedroom on the top floor of my house and it reaches to the tuner in the basement fine.
I love the programming as well and would highly recommend this unit to anyone because of its portability between vehicles with one antenna and its transmitter that whill cover every radio in your house (and yard).

2.0 out of 5 stars The FM Modulator is bad, January 18, 2005
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
I was told at the store this product has an excellent fm modulator. Very wrong. This was the reason i bought it and am very disappointed. Do not buy unless you have a direct hook up.

3.0 out of 5 stars FM transmitter is weak at best!!!, December 30, 2004

I'll make it short and to the point. Everything is great with the exception of the built in FM modulator. Signal strength from modulator to FM radio is weak at best.

If you live in or around a major city with college radio etc. taking up most of the lower end of the FM band, don't expect fine audio. My unit is overpowered by local stations even though it's only 4 feet from my antenna.

When other stations are not cutting in, there is a constant noticable hiss at all times. JVC support told me to purchase a hard wired FM transmitter. My advise to them was to make it work or don't sell it.

My review was only to allert others of this flaw.

I am also an XM subscriber and do not have this issue with my Roady unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, January 1, 2005

Gadget Freak "Jeff" (Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
I bought the JVC KT-SR2000 with the home connection kit (KS-K6013) and the Terk Sirius Outdoor antenna, as a Christmas present for the "house". The delivery was on time as promised and the installation was a breeze. The only problem encountered was freeing the receiver from it's titanium strength plastic packaging.

The receiver is used primarily as an alternative to CDs, and is connected directly to a Sony receiver. Eventually, I'll get some car connection kits for our cars. We are located in the foothills of Southern California and as such have poor FM reception. The audio quality of Sirius via the JVC SR2000 is obviously better than our non existent FX reception...and on the average "almost" CD quality.

With the indoor/outdoor antenna provided with the home connection kit mounted on the top of our our entertainment center, the reception varied from full bars to none. We do not a convenient location to place the antenna at a North/East facing window. So, I had already planned to install the Terk outdoor antenna and with that we always get maximum reception even during the recent heavy monsoon like Southern California rains.

I can not compare Sirius to XM. I chose Sirius over XM for a few of the extra programs Sirius offers (you can listen for 3 days free online as www.siriusradio.com) We are quite pleased with the programming, minimal DJ jabber, and lack of official commercials. Yes, they do some self promotion; but, it is very minimal...and even let us know that they had a "Sounds of the Season Channel" that we were not previously aware of. We listen primarily to classic rock and some jazz, and are pleased with the variety and breadth of the programming.

If you want excellent quality music, in a compact format, I highly recommend the JVC-SR2000 with the home connection kit (KS-K6013) and the Terk Sirius outdoor antenna.

4.0 out of 5 stars Portable and affordable, January 4, 2005

Reviewer "Reviewer" (Worthington, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
I was originally leery of this model because some reviewers mentioned that the sound quality from the FM modulator isn't great, and reception from the FM modulator to car radio is spotty. At worst, audio quality of some of the talk/news stations is a bit on the tinny side; sounds like AM radio. This does not bother me but your, mileage may vary. The car mounting cradle has an audio output jack, so you can plug in headphones, or you can plug the output directly into your car sound system (if your car system has audio input capability). I found that moving the radio so it's in line with my FM antenna relieves most static problems encountered with the FM modulator. Short of buying an indash, hard-wired unit, I don't think you can get much better.

Another thing I like about this unit is the small size. Most of the units I looked at were rather large and would either not fit on my dash or would take up too much space. I have a leather interior so I didn't want anything that required screws or bolts going into the dash board. The car kit for this unit uses a suction cup that attaches to the windshield. I haven't even bothered with the car mount. I just set the radio in the drink holder between the front seats. I use the remote control so I don't need to have the display of the unit sitting right in front of me.

Programming is excellent. A wide variety of stations for all levels of interest.

My only complaint is my experience with customer service. I sent an Email with a few questions about my service and promptly received an auto-reply telling me I'd have a response from customer service within 24 hours. 2 says later, still no response so I called the customer service number provided on the Sirius web site. I was on hold for more than 20 minutes. Not to happy about that.

All in all this is a good unit and Sirius offers a great bang for your bucks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not great, December 6, 2006
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
I've had this unit for a year and during that time, I've experienced the following:

-Hissing no matter which FM station is chosen
-Alert feature doesn't appear to work properly. Many times I am not alerted to the songs I have saved in my favorites. I'll turn the station and there's a song I have saved, but wasn't alerted.
-The lighted display crapped out this weekend. It's dark.

I am a Mom and don't ever remove this from my car. I rarely touch the unit and opt instead to use the remote. So the wear on it is minimal. It was a poor purchase at best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great, January 14, 2006
This review is from: JVC KT-SR2000 Plug 'n' Play Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (Electronics)
I think this is a very good receiver. A number of people have complained about issues with the wireless FM Modulator and the static that is causes. I would say that there is some static at times, but most of the time I have not had this issue. However, I will clarify that statement, by noting that if you are traveling long distances, you most likely will have to switch the FM Frequency a few times during the trip (In my case it was a two hour trip from Sacramento to the Bay Area) as the station you are set to will likely not be free for that entire time. However, it is very easy to switch the frequency, so I was able to adjust it without any difficulties.

As for the receiver itself, I like the compactness of it and it does not take long to figure out how to go through the various menus, save stations, etc. I did not care much for the suction cup that is part of the car kit. Although it worked fine on my car window, I really didn't want it there, so I actually just use the cradle and place it in one of my cupholders, but this is a personal preference.

I would definitely recommend this receiver to my friends.
