Good "Value" product,
This review is from: JVC RCEX20S Portable AM/FM CD Cassette Player (Silver) (Electronics)
SPECIAL NOTES:I bought the RCEX25S model, which is identical to this one except that it also features a remote control. OTHER OPENING NOTES: I bought the boombox for use in my apartment bedroom at school. I already owned a shelf system, that produced notably better sound, but that also took up too much space for a small room. What I was looking for in a boombox were compact size, high features for fairly low cost, and decent sound. PROS: - Attractive appearance. - Compact. - Digital AM/FM tuner. CONS: - Poor "Hyper Bass Sound" System. - Lacks manual bass/treble adjustment. REVIEW: I was quite pleased with this product's compact size and aesthetically pleasing appearance. I will note, because it's hard to tell from the provided product image, that the inlay color is a faux carbon fiber look (which is approximately a checkered black and gray). I will also note that contrary to the information under the product's "Technical data", it does NOT have a dual cassette deck - it is a SINGLE cassette deck. This wasn't a factor for me since I don't play cassette tapes, but it might be for some buyers. The antenna seems to work quite well - I haven't had to even put it up, and still get great reception of the handful of stations I listen to. The digital AM/FM tuning is great and is a MUST for anyone shopping for a boombox. If you do play or record cassette tapes, it does have a neat "Muting" function that would probably come in handy for you. (The Muting button works for the CD and radio also.) What is a bit disappointing about this boombox is the sound - it could be more robust. The HBS ("Hyper Bass Sound" System) does almost nothing - there is virtually no difference between listening with or without it turned on. Further, it would be nice if there was a manual bass/treble adjustment, whether analog or digital. Basically, the system just needs more bass. However, the EQ Presets are at least a step in the right direction. The display can also be toggled to show the time. SUMMARY: This is a very respectable boombox for the price. It boasts quality and high features, most notably the digital AM/FM tuning. You can really only expect up to a certain level of sound quality from ANY boombox, because it is, after all, just a boombox and not a shelf or home entertainment system. That said, however, I still think that they could have gotten better, more robust sound from this system. If I could do it over again, I would have purchased the Panasonic RX-D27 Boombox (ASIN: B0002KU76U)instead. I have not heard one play, but looking at the technical data shows that it has more powerful speakers (5 watts per channel vs. 2 watts on the JVC); 2-way speakers, which would probably give better sound articulation; and virtual surround sound. Sadly I did not discover the Panasonic unit until after I had already ordered the JVC. Still, this is isn't a bad purchase - I think it's a pretty good deal for a boombox. One last comment: Another reviewer complained that this boombox does not play MP3s. If they had read the technical data, they would have seen that it clearly states that it does not play MP3 formatted music. It's an unfair reflection of the product to rate it based on features it never claimed to have.

MP3 playback is horrible,

This review is from: JVC RCEX20S Portable AM/FM CD Cassette Player (Silver) (Electronics)
When I tried to play MP3 disks which play OK on other machines, this turkey couldn't handle any of them. It paused/stopped many times for no reason at random places on the disks. Also, there's no speed search function available for MP3 disks. My car audio can do MP3 speed searches; why can't this poorly deisnged bomb? Don't waste money and time on it.
