The RX-6000VBK gets things off on the right foot with its intuitively arranged front panel. A larger-than-normal display window dominates the top half of the faceplate, while directly beneath it sit large, bar-shaped buttons for selecting sources, DSP (digital signal processing), and surround modes. Perhaps best of all, we like JVC's multifunction cursor, which controls bass and treble, subwoofer level, balance, speaker settings for surround, speaker delay settings, crossover frequency, dynamic range, and tuner presets. You also use it to assign digital inputs to the components of your choice.
We're pleased that the RX-6000VBK offers S-video switching (DVD only, not for VHS) and coaxial as well as optical digital-audio inputs. We prefer coaxial and recommend you use this input for your DVD player, providing you have the output to match.
On the downside, the RX-6000VBK lacks a front-panel video input, which is handy if you're a serious camcorder user. Another feature absent is 5.1-channel direct analog inputs--probably a tradeoff to maintain the low price. Since the receiver offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, this isn't a serious liability, but multichannel inputs offer the security of accommodating future surround formats.
The RX-6000VBK's sound is clear, with a generally good balance, though it does veer slightly toward emphasizing the midrange and treble and has a tight if lean bass response. It successfully resolves instrumental textures and ambient cues. Through the RX-6000VBK, vocals sound precise and articulate, something we always welcome with music and something obviously important with DVD movies as well. Finally, JVC's Compu Link lets you control other JVC components with the RX-6000VBK's remote.
All in all, this is a fine receiver. While it lacks 5.1-channel direct inputs, it does have top-of-the-line DTS decoding, S-video switching, and a coaxial digital input. At this price, it's a strong value. --Wayne Garcia
Pros:
Cons:
Dolby Digital and DTS surround decoding give you five full-range channels and a subwoofer channel (the ".1"), letting you enjoy the most spectacular theater sound at home when you are watching movies and television broadcasts (or when listening to DTS 5.1-channel surround CDs).
Dolby Pro Logic produces left, center, right, and monaural surround information from countless VHS tapes, DVDs, and TV broadcasts. The RX-6000VBK also offers 3D-Phonic virtual surround sound (which simulates surround through only two speakers) and five of JVC's own Digital Acoustic Processor surround settings.
Electronic bass and treble controls allow you to customize the sound to your liking. The JVC RX-6000VBK has enough audio-video inputs and outputs to hook up a video game system, a second VCR, or a camcorder. This receiver also includes S-video hookups for DVD and video game addicts.
JVC's Compu Link feature lets you run your entire home theater with the included remote control.
JVC offers a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

This JVC A/V receiver delivers most of what it advertises and, for most home theater users, that is more than enough. The case is a bit bulky, but very sturdy. Front controls are easy to follow, and the remote is very user friendly. The receiver is generous in the number of inputs allotted, so that a user can connect VCR/DVD/CD/Television/Tape smoothly, quickly and with little or no confusion. The 6000VBK also gives the user a choice of digital or analog input. All of the connections are both logically and conveniently placed, making set-up a relatively painfree process. Up to six speakers can be connected, four front and two rear, plus a sub-woofer. At 100 watts per channel, that's enough power to knock the walls down with anything approaching a decent speaker. I run my system with 15-inch woofers, and the base response is so powerful that a sub-woofer in unnecessary. There are two minor weaknesses in the 6000, and they are just that, minor. First, the instructions stress that trying to connect a graphic equalizer in-line with any other component will cause distortion in the sound, particular on the low end or at high volume. The receiver features bass-boost and adjustable bass and treble levels, in effect providing an internal low-end equalizer, so this becomes a non-issue. Second, although the JVC 6000VBK claims to automatically switch the required video feed signals on the attached television/monitor, I have been unable to make that feature function properly. However, since this is easily accomplished at the television itself, it has no adverse effect on the performance of the receiver or any attached components. Overall, this receiver is an exceptional value, delivering top-end performance at a budget price. Highly recommended.

This receiver is an amazing deal for the price... I purchased it for my new apartment in MD. My family owns a high-end receiver, and the JVC is much better in my opinion... it is really easy to use and interface, and serves an entire home audio/video theatre... The sound it produces with the digital connections is unbelievable, and if you can hook up multiple speakers to enjoy the amazing surround sound, it is well worth it... I have 2 floorstanding 350 WATT KLHs as well as 2 100 WATT Aiwas and a KLH sub... the power this system can produce with its 5 100 watt channels is amazing, and i never knew that my aiwa speakers(which I use as rear surround speakers) could ever sound this good. This receiver is an excellent selection for someone looking to put together a starter home theater. Although not the most fancy player, it does everything a person who currently doesn't have a surround system needs - such as built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 decoding and a subwoofer line-level out. It has two digital audio inputs; one optical and one co-axial. These are assignable so you don't have to worry if a device has only an optical or a co-axial output. The unit will also do video switching and has composite and s-video inputs and outputs (but you can't go from s-video in to composite out). Also, it has plently of power for any starter system: 100 Watts (peak) X 5 channels. There are enough inputs for all of the goodies (CD, DVD, minidisc, tape, VCR.) The remote is basic and would could have been better if it was backlit and universal. For this price, it is understandable that the audio quality is not the clearest, but most users will not even notice. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. This is a good receiver for those just entering the home theater market or for those who are casual listeners that don't need features that they will never use. I would recommend perhaps going with the Kenwood VR-407 or the Pionner VSX-D409 which sell for about the same price. Hope this helps.
