Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

With 100 watts per channel in surround mode and 120 watts per channel in stereo, JVC's RX-888VBK surround receiver offers strong, stable sound as well as topnotch features such as Dolby Digital and DTS surround decoding. While it's not constructed with the same audiophile-grade parts as many higher-priced models, this receiver is still a strong value, bolstered by JVC's unflagging attention to sound quality.

Full surround options are at your fingertips here, from Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic to DTS and 5.1-channel analog inputs for future surround formats such as DVD-Audio.

JVC loads the RX-888VBK with more S-video inputs than most people know what to do with and lets you choose between coaxial and Toslink optical digital-audio connections, depending on your taste and DVD player.

The RX-888VBK uses AV Compu Link, JVC's system for enabling its components to communicate with one another. With the simple insertion of a video tape, audio CD, or cassette into a Compu Link component, a series of automated events activates the complementing JVC Compu Link products, simplifying the operation for you.

Text Compu Link is an additional step toward system automation. The system is fully compatible with text data carried on media such as minidisc and CD Text-compatible CDs and transmits this data from component to component. Text Compu Link ties together JVC receivers with JVC CD changers, minidisc recorders, DVD players, and your TV. You can choose the track you want to play from a list on the TV screen, and you can search by performer, title, or genre. JVC Text Compu Link shows text data (performer name, disc title, and genre) of CD Text-enabled CDs and DVD Text-enabled DVDs on the receiver's display and on your TV screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars It has EVERYTHING for a great price!!, October 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC RX-888 Audio/Video Receiver (Electronics)
I searched for a receiver for quite along time that had all of the features that are absolutely necessary for a modern Home Theater system. I found nothing under $800. JVC's PREVIOUS top-of-the-line model did NOT measure up... The main feature missing in almost all of the units I had looked at was connectivity: most units did not have enough s-video inputs (a true home theater unit should have at least 3 and preferably 4). To take advantage of the higher resolution and picture quality, you need s-video or component inputs for all digital video signals (DirecTV/DSS, DVD, Laserdisc, digital camcorders, digital cable) as well as SVHS VCRs and camcorders. It should also have enough digital audio inputs for all digital audio (DirecTV/DSS, DVD, CD, MD). This unit has it all!! It is well made, with very high quality banana speaker terminals, the remote controls almost everything, and is relatively easy to setup. If you have the need to spend alot of money ($800-$2000) on a receiver, you certainly can, but if you just need a great receiver that your Home Theater system will NOT outgrow, this is the ticket!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Receiver, Reasonably Priced, Lousy Manual, December 3, 1999

This review is from: JVC RX-888 Audio/Video Receiver (Electronics)
I've had this receiver now for about 6 months. Overall, I like it. The sound is good. It has just about all of the connections I could possibly want. They included just about all of the cables I needed, except for the optical cable, which turned out to be very expensive.

One complaint that I have is that this receiver is very complex. It stems from the fact that it has so many features. However, the manual is awful at explaining how to use the various features. (Yes, I read manuals.)

The remote control is big, but nicely laid out. The main buttons I use (play, stop, volumne, etc.) are large and easy to find by feel. Which is important to me while I'm watching movies in the dark.

I'm happy with this receiver. I would buy it again, but I'm still figuring out how to use all of the things it's capable of. If you're intimidated by technology, then this may not be the receiver for you. If you want a good receiver at a reasonable price and are willing to learn as you go, then this receiver may be a good choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The core component for Home Theater, December 16, 1999

This review is from: JVC RX-888 Audio/Video Receiver (Electronics)
If you are looking for a base receiver which will support the needs of home theater now and in the future, this is it. This unit has three key features that are an absolute must for home theater(performance and price go without saying); 1)Dolby Digital & DTS ready -this is the main reason to invest in home theater! 2) Full S-Video inputs for all components -Video switching can be cumbersome unless your receiver and all your components use the same video input/outputs (SVGA, RCA & RF). Buy this unit with the intention of connecting all your components via SVGA for ease of operation and superb picture quality. 3) Digital Audio input Mapping -Sounds technical but it simply allows you to address the receiver optical inputs to your match your equipment. What all this means is that this receiver has all the flexibility to support whatever components you have today and any you decide to upgrade/add tomorrow. I tried out two other receivers before zeroing in on this one.

The only downside(as also mentioned by another reviewer)is that the unit is somewhat of a technical challenge to master. JVC operation manuals tend to be a little brief and cryptic in their explainations. This one is better than most but you must read the manual (probably more than once)when you set this unit up or it will not function properly. (e.g., In addition to all the cabling, Dolby Digital sound requires proper DVD I/O mapping plus the DVD player must be set to output the proper digital data stream.)

In all the units I've seen, this one is far and away the best equipped, and for the money, its an obvious top choice.
