4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome for simple home stereo use
I had a hard time buying this product, as I could only fine 1 review anywhere on the internet. I went ahead and took a chance, and I have to say I'm immensely happy.

The sound quality from this little guy is just fine for home theater and stereo use. It's not "top of the line", but if you dont have 500-1000$ to spend, then this will certainly get the job...

I've had my RX-D202B for about a month now and, up to this point, it has worked very nicely. I came home this evening to watch a DVD on my new plasma TV with full digital surround-sound via this receiver/amp, but when I turned it on there was a bright blue flash from inside the right rear of the cabinet, and now it refuses to power on, even after I've tried everything I could think of to reset it. Its power is filtered through a surge protector, it hadn't been turned on all day prior to that, and I've verified (by meter and by hooking up my old surround-sound system) that the speakers and speaker wiring are not shorted, so I have no explanation for this behavior. I suspect a fuse has blown, but the cabinet is designed (and the warning labels sufficiently alarming) so that opening it up to look inside seems contraindicated. I'll know more after I take it in for warranty service, but I'm a bit skeptical of this thing right at the moment.

I had a hard time buying this product, as I could only fine 1 review anywhere on the internet. I went ahead and took a chance, and I have to say I'm immensely happy.

The sound quality from this little guy is just fine for home theater and stereo use. It's not "top of the line", but if you dont have 500-1000$ to spend, then this will certainly get the job done. I have to say, you wont be disappointed either--paired up with some 100watt speakers, the sound quality is just fine.

There are enough hookups in the back to satisfy me, but I almost hit my limit. I have also had to resort to using the "DBS" setting for my CD player--not a huge deal, just amusing that there is no "CD" setting.

Unlike the other review I have read, I had no problems getting my settings to stay; once I told it what speakers I had, where they were, etc, it's stayed that way.

The USB port may be a selling point, but since most people dont set their amp right next to their computer, you may want to consider that before buying for this option. (I havent even used the USB port yet)

4.0 out of 5 stars A low cost unit, but has its share of bugs, April 10, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JVC RX-D202B 700-Watt 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Sound Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I bought the system after an initial wariness of the product with earlier reviews. I have a lot of experience in home electronics and enjoy setting things up, so the installation was a snap and the modification of the digital inputs was a piece of cake, although frankly I'm more impressed with the analog inputs than the digital, but that could very well be the other electronics in my stereo cabinet.

First problem is the USB input stopped functioning on day two. I'm currently stationed in Africa and have not been able to sit on hold with JVC for support, but the USB stopped working after about 12 hours of use. When it worked the sound was fantastic - awesome digital input. After the first day it just stopped playing through USB. The computer still recognizes that a USB device is connected but no sound. I thought it might be the computer so I tried running it off a laptop and again - no sound, but the computer recognized the device. I'm at a loss - The only thing the manual says is to disconnect and reconnect - well after about 20 tries one gets tired. I ended up connecting through the line out jack on the audio card to the analog inputs on the stereo- That works ok too.

Coincidentally, most of the rest of my AV stuff is JVC, so I have not used the remote to control other brand devices. The weirdest thing is that the TV control button (powering on and off other TVs) works only sometimes. No rhyme or reason, but on any given day the button will not actually turn on (or off) the TV. This phenomenon is not listed anywhere in the manual... Just strange.

All the basic features of the stereo work fine - I'm actually using the 6.1 option rather than the 7.1 because I only have six speakers and I'm impressed at the great sound for the budget price. The subwoofer-out produces a whole lot of bass, but can be controlled.

All and all, if the USB didn't crash so fast, this would be an excellent value. Still a good deal though. For me it's a replacement until I can upgrade, and for the money I haven't found anything else in the same price category that delivers the same performance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Took a chance, got burned., April 7, 2006

Bought this unit to replace an aging Kenwood 5.1 digital receiver. Had the unit for about two weeks, at about that time I was watching a movie late one night when out of the corner of my eye I caught a bright white flash and about as soon as that registered I realized that I no longer had any audio. The unit would still power on but no audio.

I applied for a refund from Amazon, they accepted and had the unit picked up shortly thereafter at my house and at no cost to me. About a little over a week later I had my refund.

Lessons learned, going to buy a more reputable unit this time around. But definitely no hesitation in dealing with Amazon again.

While the unit was functioning it wasn't all that impressive, the audio was solid for its price range but the feature set was not overly useful when connecting to a HTPC with coax or fiber optics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Cheap?, November 27, 2005
This review is from: JVC RX-D202B 700-Watt 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Sound Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
JVC has a reputation for making reasonable quality products for a reasonable price. The receiver I got started having problems after about 2 weeks. It started putting out a feedback loop when a digtal source was inactive. But what made me return it was, it would shut off when playing loud DVD scenes. It would do this only on some output setting.

It's reasonable that a 7.1 receiver at this price would not have some features like video conversion. I had come to expect that JVC products do what they do fairly well. At least the receiver I got didn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Receiver- Great Price!!, June 22, 2006
This review is from: JVC RX-D202B 700-Watt 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Sound Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I bought this receiver in May when the right channel on my 1977 Luxman R-1050 went out, the left channel still works good and i saved it for future use with only 2 speakers, but you can't have surround sound with only 2 speakers. My JVC was perfect out of the box, and still is. It has not presented to me one problem at all. It has impressive surround sound, I have always counted on JVC. I have it hooked up to a Samsung Tv, a n Audiovox DVD player, Emerson 5 speaker sp200 system, a Sony Xplod 1200w subwoofer, and a Volfenhag amplifier for the sub. I only wish they had provided a better FM antenna.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price!, February 5, 2006
This review is from: JVC RX-D202B 700-Watt 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Sound Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I bought this because I wanted a powerful receiver that was also easy to use. Once this thing is set-up, it is exactly that...easy.

My wife can barely change satellite TV settings, but she handles the JVC with ease.

Pait this with a decent set of 5.1 or 7.1 surround speakers and subwoofer and you will not be disappointed. It has many features also found in much more expensive units.

Also great if you have another JVC component (TV, DVD) due to the AV Compulink availability

Lots of video inputs and outputs, including S-video and component-make this very useful for someone with limited inputs on their TV.

The reason for only 4 instead of 5 stars it its lack of digital audio inputs. It has ONE optical in and ONE digital coaxial in, and ONE USB in (for streaming music from a PC). For my components, I need at least 3 fiber optic inputs. That means I will need to buy splitters and at least one converter.

All this said, if you just have a satellite and a DVD player, this may be perfect!

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk, July 31, 2006
This review is from: JVC RX-D202B 700-Watt 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Sound Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
When I received this amp all the video and audio inputs except the s-video and optical audio didn't work. It is still in the repair shop, I took it in two days after I got it.

I had some dificulity with the manual not being clear--but the unit works great. It is difficult to understand how to code the sound sources. After some initial problems, the unit meets my expectations.
