Amazon.com Product Description

Don't let a small living room put a damper on your home entertainment. JVC's compact, 5-disc TH-C4 home theater system packs a powerful audio-visual punch with minimal intrusion and no hookup hassles. The system's specially designed surround speakers use version 2.0 of JVC's custom omnidirectional design, making any room an optimal space for enjoying movies and music in ultra-realistic surround sound. You'll get the capacity for first-rate progressive-scan video and world-class sound from high-resolution DVD-Audio discs, which feature your favorite albums specially mixed to take advantage of discrete, multichannel surround sound.

With a total power output of 1,002 watts--that's 167 watts x 6 (front left/center/right, rear left/right, and a subwoofer)--the system has the ability to convey the power and impact of the most action-packed Hollywood adventures.

The TH-C4 supports most popular optical disc formats, including DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, SVCD, VCD, MP3 CD, JPEG image CD, and WMA CD. DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound, providing both multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.

The system features five compact, bookshelf (wall-mountable) satellite speakers: 2-way speakers for the front set, a 2-way center speaker, plus 2-way omnidirectional surrounds. JVC's omnidirectional surround speakers feature a driver design that directs midrange and treble frequencies upward and outward in all horizontal directions, covering a wider area than conventional, forward-firing speakers. Key to this design is a diffuser that disperses sound, which then reflects back from walls and ceilings, similar to what you'd experience in a surround-equipped movie theater. For this model, the speakers were updated to provide an even wider soundfield by raising and tilting forward the top-firing driver.

Another JVC technology, Smart Surround Setup (also version 2.0), makes it easy to set the speaker levels and delay times for your primary listening position. You simply make a sound, such as a hand clap, from your desired listening position, and a built-in microcomputer automatically sets the system sound levels and delay times for optimum multichannel performance.

The system's low-profile DVD receiver and 5-disc changer offers the latest image-enhancing benefits, including a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for detailed images. If, now or later, you're using a high-definition or HD_ready TV or monitor, you'll appreciate the system's Digital Direct Progressive Scan output, which produces a seamless, flicker-free image closer to what you see in theaters than standard interlaced sources can produce.

For audiophiles, onboard 192 kHz/24-bit audio DACs maximize the capabilities of DVD-Audio discs as well as more common PCM stereo and Dolby Digital/DTS audio tracks. Dolby Pro Logic II generates 5.1-channel sound from any stereo source, including your MP3 files.

With a redesigned drive mechanism and new algorithms for media identification and parameter optimization, Express Start will deliver the first scene of a movie onscreen in just under 4 seconds (with single-layer discs).

Other features include analog audio inputs to accommodate a VCR, plus a digital-audio input for a digital satellite receiver. Three video outputs--component-video, S-video, and composite-video--guarantee compatibility with any currently available television or monitor. You also get a radio tuner with 15 AM and 30 FM station presets, a headphone output for private listening, a choice of 3 onscreen languages, and a multi-brand TV/VCR remote control.

What's in the Box
DVD/receiver unit, 4 satellite speakers with stands and base plates, 1 center speaker, 1 subwoofer, a remote control, remote batteries, FM/AM antennas, a power cord, a system cord, a composite-video cable, requisite speaker cables, and mounting screws for satellite speakers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay but annoyances overcome good points, November 28, 2006
This review is from: JVC THC4 Home Theater System with 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
The sound from this system is very good. It is easy to use and has multiple inputs. Set up is typical of these units.

However, the annoyances and idiosyncrasies overcome the excellent sound quality.

First, this unit uses the same basic tuner/DVD play as the THC40, THC50 and THC60. These comments would apply to all these models.

The DVD often looses it's place, even with the "Resume" feature turned on. It does this whenever you turn the unit off or switch to a different input, say your cable-TV or VCR. This is very annoying, especially when I have to repeatedly sit through the endless copyright notices.

The on-screen prompts never display which DVD is playing. Minor but yet another example of a poorly thought out design.

The "Universal Remote" isn't. It will only operate *some* JVC components. For example, it will not operate a two-year JVC TV!

Headphone usage: You cannot connect headphones without cutting off the speakers. I have tried and there is just no other way than to use the headphone jack in front. Unplug the headphones and it takes 5-6 seconds to switch the speakers back on. Sometimes when listening to music, I want put on the wireless headphones while working around the house, but I do not want to wear them all the time. Maybe I just want to run into the kitchen and do not want to miss any dialog.

Even with this limitation, there is a killer problem. Headphones will only work for a few minutes before. Then, without warning you get ear-splitting hiss. Unplugging and plugging in the headphones corrects this but what is the point? At first I thought my headphones had died so I bought another pair. It was not the headphones. Headphones are useless with this unit.

So, if you always watch a DVD from start to finish, never use headphones, and own nothing but recently manufactured JVC products, I think you will be happy. If you do not, I think you will like the sound, but will be often annoyed.
