JVC XL-PG37 Personal CD Player with 45 Seconds of Anti-Shock Protection (Diamond Black)
My soldier son wanted a good cd player to carry with him when traveling and otherwise permitted. He was looking for good sound and reliability, and says he got both in this player. When I asked him whether it was worth the 3-4 times higher than the average cd player price, his answer was an unqualified "YES." The only reasons this doesn't get a 5 star rating is that the player doesn't appear to be the sturdiest thing (despite its anti-shock characteristics), and that it comes with no protective case or rechargeable batteries. It is hard to find a better than average cd player that will play all types of cds these days, but this one fills the bill!

My JVC XLPG37 Personal CD Player was purchased because I am looking for something that will last longer that the 2-3 months I have been getting from Sony. Amazon had 2 good, or perhaps hopeful, reviews on this unit and I was getting desperate because of the reason I use CD players. . . To be fair, I still use CD players because I am addicted to audio books which I play 1-6 hours a day as I do chores and as a sleep aid - perhaps not an easy life for delicate electronics. Public libraries don't go from one medium to the next no-matter-how-great-thing overnight. Many of them still have books on cassette tapes in their collections. Hence desperation because library collections last longer and evolve more slowly than player technologies. For perspective, I would give one of my old Sony D-NF340's 5 stars on ease of use, 2 stars on ease of battery replacement, and one star on durability (6 months warranty). My old blue RCA player of similar configuration was easy to use but bulkier to carry around, had slightly better battery access, but even less durability (2 yr warranty). My JVC XLPG37 Personal CD Player (which is of similar configuration to the above) is 3-4 mos old and still operating but is beginning to make more little electronic errors. For audio book use, it is something of a pain to use. Every time it is turned off or any time it stops of its own accord as it is fond of doing (sometimes even with the controls locked) it looses its place in the book and back we go to track number one. ARGH! Also bulkier to carry and the battery level gauge only appears when the battery is dead. Ease of use 2 stars. I was pleased to see the JVC has access to batteries from the outside of the case - a very good idea. But the space allowed for each battery is so cramped that they are difficult to extract and install. Ease of battery replacement 3 stars. Durability yet unknown. As big a pain as it is, loosing its place all the time, it will probably last for years (one yr warranty). This time I purchased a Square Trade warranty through Amazon. Maybe there will be a review on that pretty soon. So what is an audio book fan to do? As soon as I exhaust diminishing CD player options, I guess it will be ipod for me with the hassle of CD to computer to ipod . . . How long do ipods last???
