4.0 out of 5 stars Great size & sound
Rechargeable battery (and the charger DOES come with it), 40-second buffer (unfortunately, I still have to carry in my hand when jogging), no need for recording capability (so price very attractive compared to Sonys I'd seen) were reasons for my choice (to replace Sony MZ-E40). Have found the over-all product well contructed, handy, and with superb minidisc sound. I...

1.0 out of 5 stars JVC XM-P55-SL
Purchased mine a few months ago, my only regret on this model is that is does not record...the price for it as a stand alone recorder is high in my opinion. (I should have read the spec's more carefully)

I'm now searching for recorder...any suggestions?

Rechargeable battery (and the charger DOES come with it), 40-second buffer (unfortunately, I still have to carry in my hand when jogging), no need for recording capability (so price very attractive compared to Sonys I'd seen) were reasons for my choice (to replace Sony MZ-E40). Have found the over-all product well contructed, handy, and with superb minidisc sound. I do not use the control panel... all the controls I need are on the unit itself. Nor do I anticipate using the AA battery adaptor. As to replacement rechargeable batteries, JVC says parts/supplies available. I believe them. Excellent first experience with Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very compact with long battery life., September 5, 1999

Most controls and the display are on the remote, although it is not required to operate the unit. JVC has included an attachable AA battery pack that significantly increases the playing time. It is plastic and not of the same quality as the unit, but adaquately made. Overall, I am quite pleased with the unit. I just wish I could find some one who sells replacement rechargeable batteries for it (it is an odd Ni-MH flat type).

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice sounding unit, with no spare batteries available at all, September 30, 2000

This review is from: JVC XMP55SL Portable Minidisc Player (Electronics)
Nice unit. Well made. Sounds great. Headphones are great. You must remove battery to charge it! Don't like that. Battery life is good. Has attachable battery adapter for AA alkalines. But everyone should be aware that there are NO MORE RECHARGABLE BATTERIES AVAILIBLE FOR THIS UNIT. JVC SAYS THEY ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. Good reason not to buy it or any JVC product. They don't supply batteries to a unit they are still selling new. Web site says it is supplied with 4 rechargable batteries. IT IS NOT. Check out Sony's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine!, June 12, 2000

I have the JVC Minidisc since Jan, 1999. It works fine untill today, with a good sound.

Instead several other PLAYERS, the JVC have 40 seconds memory (anti-schock) too.

The problem is the price (too high for a player)

If you are thinking to buy a MD PLAYER, JVC is good! If you are thinking to buy a MD RECORDER/PLAYER, then I think the best is SONY!

JVC XM-P55XL is just a player, it doesn't record. Normal MD player costs around $100-$150 dollars. What consumer should buy instead is a MD player plus recorder. Which cost around same as JVC XM-P55XL
