Yes, it was a problem with the N50. It would happen with all different output modes, and would come up almost on cue when I fast-forwarded through a section. I recently returned the JVC and bougt a Pioneer DV-563AS, and have had no such issues with the same movies in any player mode, progressive or not. 4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Jvc fan, November 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC XV-N50BK Slim DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
Im not a fan of JVC, however I am open minded and I checked this baby out really good before I bought it. I took a couple of my dvd-r's and a factory dvd with me. I was amazed when it played everything I threw at it. It doesnt play dvd ram however. I seen
no stuttering problem at all, must have got a good one. I ended
up buying it. Ive been a audio/video enthusiast for sometime and
this is my second progressive scan player. The one I took home is
a good one too, I havnt had a single problem with it so far. It
even displays the folders you put your windows media files in from your computer (Handy). The only reason Im not giving it 5
stars is I do agree with one other reviewer, The blue light on the loading tray is a little distracting, but when you dim it, it
can be gotten used too. I love the looks but I like the prformance alot better. If you Like JVC you will love this player
because its compu-link system will easily intigrate with your JVC
audio system. If your not a JVC fan like me you will love it for its price vs. the loads of features.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little player, May 13, 2003
This review is from: JVC XV-N50BK Slim DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
I bought this player to replace an older Toshiba and an audiologic. I have tested this with 6 brands of DVD-R discs and one DVD+RW disc as well as various CDR's and it has worked without a hitch on everything. There are only two complaints that I have about this player so far that keeps it from a 5 stars in my eyes. First, it won't play mp3's that are put onto DVD's. I tried a $50 apex player and it did them fine. Second, when playing VCD's it says PBC in the display window and won't display the countdown timer like it does with DVD's. I really like to see how far I am into a movie. Aside from those two things it has been a great player and I only wish my TV would handle progressive scan. Oh, when they say slim, they mean slim. The thing is hardly taller than a VHS tape.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's REALLY slim, yet feature packed, May 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC XV-N50BK Slim DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
I can't get over how thin this player is. It replaced my dependable 1988 JVC CD player and is 1/3 the height. I'm pleased that JVC still supports "Compu-Link" which allows this player to interact with the rest of my JVC stereo system.

As for the features, I love the feature that lets you stop the DVD movie and pop it back in later to automatically continue where you left off. The Zoom feature let's you remove the letterbox bands. It's easy to configure the settings and the blue glow is cool.

My first real stereo rack system was JVC in 1988 and it still works perfectly. This DVD player is great and I hope it lasts just as long. I think JVC makes quality products.

Was surprised to see the negatives regarding stutter on this machine. I have about 500 DVD's in my collection, including some VCD's, and DVD's I have burned myself and have not notices any instances of stutter. Am also curious regarding the remark that it stutters when it pans, since the DVD player is just decoding data...and not "panning" anything.

The positives regarding this machine are numerous. It will play disks that will not play on my computer. It's error correction is excellent. The main reason I bought this machine was so that I could play VCD's, CD-R, and DVD+R disks. And it doesn't disappoint. The remote is set up well. There was a previous negative comment that the buttons were too far apart. Personally, I view this as a positive because you can actually use it in the dark because the are far enough apart that you can actually press the right button (one you figure out the pattern that is). The only negative I can see is that the DVD carrying tray itself seems quite flimsy. I can see a pair of little hands snapping it off in a heartbeat! Those of you with small children beware!

5.0 out of 5 stars No issues... I guess the other reviewer had bad luck!, September 2, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I guess we sometimes are lucky and sometimes not. Wanting a nice silver progressive scan DVD, I was debating between a Panasonic and this one, but the nice experience prevailed and, having happily owned a JVC stereo system a few years ago, I settled for this DVD player. So far, I have not had any complaints, plus it's very easy to use and it looks very slick in our living room. For the low cost, I would highly encourage even those customers considering the REALLY cheap options to pick this one up instead. You will be find it a rewarding and affordable option to fulfill your DVD playing needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue Light Special, January 28, 2004
By

I just bought this player a couple of weeks ago and i am extremely pleased. I initially bought a Sony in the same price range (maybe 20 or so dollars more) and took it back because it wouldn't play some of my DVD-R's (although the picture and sound were decent). I'm glad I switched to the JVC. The picture is much better than the Sonys. The colors are WAY more vibrant and the blacks much sharper. Far superior picture quality. I also like the zoom and play at 1.5x features that the sony didn't offer. I have noticed absolutely no stutter. Those concerns seemed to have been adressed. As far as the light goes...I don't like it either so I turn it off by using the dimmer button on the remote. I believe there are 3 different settings for the light. The only problem being (for some) that it also dims the LCD. Personally I like the simple, sleek look (lights out). Also, if you buy this or any other high end player be sure to invest in some good component cables. You get a much better picture. I believe you can get the monster cables for 30 dollars or so. Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great little powerhouse, November 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC XV-N50BK Slim DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
I have had this player for about a week now and I have to say that I am very impressed. It plays DVD-R disks that other players wouldn't even recognize. It also plays damaged sections of the disk without a skip or stutter. If you are looking for your first dvd player or an upgrade you can't go wrong with this JVC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean Start, September 26, 2003
This review is from: JVC XV-N50BK Slim DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
My first DVD player, and a real pleasure. Silky operation, extremely easy setup (rational menus!!), and - especially - a very elegant user interface. Icons and status text are unobtrusive but clear, and don't get in the way of the movie experience. Having used a wide array of other DVD players, this is a huge relief - no alphabet-block, screen-filling GUIs!
I'm using this player with a veteran 21" Toshiba set with no very sophisticated features, but the JVC seems prepped for the wide-screen set I'll someday get. Rock solid play - no skips and blips. Though I'm still exploring all its options, so far it's a genuine delight.

Yes, it was a problem with the N50. It would happen with all different output modes, and would come up almost on cue when I fast-forwarded through a section. I recently returned the JVC and bougt a Pioneer DV-563AS, and have had no such issues with the same movies in any player mode, progressive or not. This is a problem that JVC shoull adress, as it is a shame that an affordable player such as the XVN series with so many good features suffers fro this.

Here is a review site (CNET) that talks about the problem on the silver (XVN-55SL) player.

http://reviews.cnet.com/JVC_XV_N55SL/4505-6473_7-30459924.html?tag=pdtl-list

Skip this one and go for either the Panasonic S55S or the above-mentioned Pioneer (unfortunately, both only available in silver).
