Amazon.com Product Description

JVC's XV-S300BK is a slim-design, "all-in-one" media player that not only spin commercial DVD-Videos and CDs, but homemade CD-R/CD-RW discs and MP3 CD as well. The XV-S300BK's component-video output is ideal for use with the latest high-resolution televisions (and a standard composite-video output works with most older TVs). The unit is also compatible with the SVCD (super video CD) and VCD formats, which are popular for many Asian films.

Most DVD players are great CD players, too, and the XV-S300BK is better than most in this respect. What makes this player special is JVC's proprietary 1-bit P.E.M. D.D. audio decoder, which minimizes clock jitter and other sonically degrading artifacts and offers an analog stage with an impressive 106 dB dynamic range (in stereo) so your music sounds as true to life as possible.

The decoder's 96 kHz/24-bit resolution ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats, including high-resolution music on DVD-Video discs. 3-D Phonic virtual surround simulates surround-sound effects using only 2 speakers, so you'll still be able to appreciate a sense of surround sound even if you don't have a surround receiver or 6-channel speaker set-up.

The XV-S300BK's traditional audio connections include 1 set of left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with stereo Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions and 1 coaxial digital-audio output to route Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel signals to a surround-decoding audio/video receiver.

The back panel offers 1 output each for standard composite-video, S-video, and top-of-the-line component-video. A full-function remote control is supplied.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a stereo analog audio/composite-video cable, a user's manual, and warranty information.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice player, but problem with closed-captions, July 11, 2002
This review is from: JVC XV-S300BK DVD Player, Black (Electronics)
I picked up this player about a week ago to replace my 4-year-old RCA player which is starting to glitch on me. Overall, this is a very nice player with a decent remote control. The error-correction was very good, as it played some of my glitchy DVDs flawlessly. One cool feature with the on-screen display was showing the the data bit-rate at which the DVDs were encoded.

Unfortunately, one major flaw I found with the player was that it wouldn't pass through closed-caption signals to my TV. I'm not sure if this was a problem with just my player, but I think it may be a design flaw with all JVC players because I read about the same problem with some older JVC players from over a year ago.

I had to return my player, as I couldn't figure out how to make the closed-captions work properly. My new Panasonic passes through CC properly with no hitches, but it doesn't play my glitchy DVDs as smoothly as this JVC does.

If closed-captions are not a critical criteria for you, this JVC might fit your needs perfectly. If you are hard of hearing and absolutely need CC, skip this player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great player!, July 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC XV-S300BK DVD Player, Black (Electronics)
We bought this JVC recently as a second DVD player to use in our bedroom and so far we're very pleased with its performance. We don't need the CC function so the problems mentioned by the other reviewer don't really apply to us. One thing, the remote on this model will not control your TV but that's something we can live with. Hook up is easy and picture quality excellent. The player's options are easy to setup too from the onscreen display. A good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Flexible DVD Player, October 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC XV-S300BK DVD Player, Black (Electronics)
I got this model as a gift and am generally happy with it. I want to dispute the claim of one of the reviewers where he/she saw alternate bright and dark picture on some movies. This is a problem only if you connect the RCA video out into a VCR player, then use regular TV cable from your VCR to the TV.

Get a RF modulator (from RadioShack) if your TV does not have a RCA video input. Don't connect via your VCR.
