nice player, but problem with closed-captions,

I picked up this player about a week ago to replace my 4-year-old RCA player which is starting to glitch on me. Overall, this is a very nice player with a decent remote control. The error-correction was very good, as it played some of my glitchy DVDs flawlessly. One cool feature with the on-screen display was showing the the data bit-rate at which the DVDs were encoded.Unfortunately, one major flaw I found with the player was that it wouldn't pass through closed-caption signals to my TV. I'm not sure if this was a problem with just my player, but I think it may be a design flaw with all JVC players because I read about the same problem with some older JVC players from over a year ago. I had to return my player, as I couldn't figure out how to make the closed-captions work properly. My new Panasonic passes through CC properly with no hitches, but it doesn't play my glitchy DVDs as smoothly as this JVC does. If closed-captions are not a critical criteria for you, this JVC might fit your needs perfectly. If you are hard of hearing and absolutely need CC, skip this player.

Great player!,

This review is from: JVC XV-S300BK DVD Player, Black (Electronics)
We bought this JVC recently as a second DVD player to use in our bedroom and so far we're very pleased with its performance. We don't need the CC function so the problems mentioned by the other reviewer don't really apply to us. One thing, the remote on this model will not control your TV but that's something we can live with. Hook up is easy and picture quality excellent. The player's options are easy to setup too from the onscreen display. A good buy.

Decent Flexible DVD Player,

I got this model as a gift and am generally happy with it. I want to dispute the claim of one of the reviewers where he/she saw alternate bright and dark picture on some movies. This is a problem only if you connect the RCA video out into a VCR player, then use regular TV cable from your VCR to the TV.Get a RF modulator (from RadioShack) if your TV does not have a RCA video input. Don't connect via your VCR.

This is a great DVD player. It has everything you need, at a price you can't beat. It's such a good buy. It's easy to set up and easy to use. A great first DVD player for anyone who is thinking of getting a DVD player. I wouldn't use it on my HDTV home theater, but if you just want something simple that looks great, this is the one. It has good sound and picture for the price. Haven't had any problems with it, what can I say I love it. It was cool.Big Truck

Great Player & Bright/Dark Picture Problems Explained,
By A Customer
This review is from: JVC XV-S300BK DVD Player, Black (Electronics)
This a great basic DVD player and should prove to be reliable. The problem mentioned by some reviewers of alternating brightness has nothing to do with the player. This is caused by Macrovision Copy-Protection and can affect your TV's picture even with a direct connection between the DVD player and TV on some TV models. I worked with Macrovision on this and got nowhere. I finally got a Macrovision-Killer and that fixed the problem.

No bells or whistles, but if all you want is a simple, affordable DVD player that gets the job done and is quick and easy to set up, then this is an ideal candidate.

Great DVD player, especially for the new DVD enthusiast!,

Okay, here's my experience.I've been meaning to purchase a DVD player for a year or two, because of the better sound and picture quality, great durability of the films released on DVD, and diminishing VHS market. I finally took the plunge and bought this DVD player, because the price was great and the features looked nice and basic. As a new DVD enthusiast, I didn't feel like I needed a lot of bells, whistles, progressive-scan, etc. I just wanted a nice simple set-up. This certainly fits the bill. The sound is great, the picture quality is wonderful, and the performance is very good. Again, I'm speaking as a beginner in the world of DVDs, but this player has all the features you'd want in a basic DVD player, at a very great price. The remote is easy to use, but I would add that the instruction manual for setting up the player is a little confusing for beginners, but after a few minutes and some common sense, it becomes quick and easy set-up. In short: DVD is here to stay, people. These aren't laserdiscs or betamax. With major retail chains beginning to pull VHS films, and with an increasing DVD film market, this is no mere trend. It is here, and I couldn't be happier. To see my favorite films with crystal clear digital sound and picture, to have them preserved in DVD form, its a marvelous experience. If you're a beginner, you should pick this player up. You won't be disappointed.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I finally decided to get a dvd player, after looking and looking. The price on this one was absolutely great, and JVC convinced me. So I popped for it, and it arrived in two days. It was simple to hook up, flawless in performance, and a great improvement over VHS. I know [Amazon.com] bleeps the prices if I put any here, but I got it through the GOLD BOX and could not be happier with the price or product. I am using the S Video output into a XBR Sony, and plan to add the speaker system next. The picture is beautiful. Flawless. No moire, no ringing, no noise. The audio has yet to be heard, since I have not set up the home theatre sound yet. But I expect it to be fine. One thing, this unit does not have optical audio output, just coax. That is fine with me.PS. I am a tv broadcast engineer since 1972. I repair monitors and vcrs. I know video. This one is great for anybody who does not have a 62 inch hdtv thing taking up half their house.

Stopped Working After One Year,
By KRG (Vashon Island, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JVC XV-S302SL DVD Player , Silver (Electronics)
A few months ago I started having problems turning it on, opening the DVD etc... and suddenly it would work. But now, it just doesn't work. It is like the electric current isn't reaching where it needs to go to make it work. It is on standby mode, but won't turn on, open or play. I have a rented DVD stuck in there and I think I have to break it open to get it out! I'm definitly going to smash this with a hammer!
