You might want to avoid this unit if you let kids use your entertainment center, as the tray feels like it could snap off if handled roughly; it's pretty lightweight.

3.0 out of 5 stars JVC XVN410 DVD Player
I was initially pleased with this product, it was a simple hook up,and Consumer Reports gives it high marks. Unfortunately many of these players freeze up during play, and this happens every 8-10 minutes. I returned the player to Video Only, and they exchanged it for another of the same model. Imagine my dismay when this unit also froze up every 8-10 minutes. Upon...

When I got this player, it would freeze occasionally while playing commercial DVDs, and every 30 seconds while playing DVD-R and +R discs I burned (using Verbatim media and a Plextor burner). After about 10 seconds frozen, it would resume.

JVC has a free firmware update you can download which fixes this problem (hanging at chapter changes). You burn it to a CD-R and it's simple to update the player. It fixed the problem for me. It's at:

This firmware fix moved this player from 2 stars to 4 for me.

Imagine my dismay when this unit also froze up every 8-10 minutes. Upon returning the second unit, I was told that "freezing up" was a known problem with this player. Unfortunately the store refused to issue a refund, even though they had been aware of the freezing problem for some time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keep Looking, January 19, 2005

I purchased this unit to replace my Panasonic S35 which just died after about 15 months. I am in a bind since finding a DVD player these days with an optical output for connection to my home theater receiver was proving difficult. The JVC was one of the few units still currently produced on the market which does offer this feature.

Overall, the picture quality seemed grainy compared to the Panasonic and previous Sony unit that I owned. The blue light across the door is cheesy and the DVD door itself is very fragile and flimsy. It played scratched DVD's and DVD-Rs without any problems. However, a DVD that my kids installed with some fingerprints on the disc froze and the door would not open until I unplugged the unit. Lastly, the player would freeze for a second or two when changing to the next scene periodically during the movie.

Considering the price of the JVC player compared to other brands available on the market, you can do better than this one. I'm taking mine back after only owning it for two days.

1.0 out of 5 stars A problem that Amazon.com must deal with, July 31, 2004
By
This review is from: JVC XVN410BK Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
I bought this player on July 2nd because it had rave reviews. I recieved the player, gave it a test drive and all appeared fine. I didn't notice the freezing as MANY others have since posted until a few weeks later when I tried to watch a DVD. This is obviously a problem with the batch of players that Amazon.com has in inventory. Now I read that I have 30 days to return it. It's July 30th, and they better take the thing back or fix the problem. Looks like everyone has this freezing issue. I sure wish I was contacted if they were receiving that many complaints about a product. Hopefully they replace my defective DVD player!

I use 2 of these players, they have always worked fine for me. I play retail DVDs, DVD-RWs and DVD-Rs, I've never had any problems with either player or any type of disc. The picture quality is good with plenty of adjustments to set according to personal preferences. The door is a little flimsy and the blue light is annoying, but the display can be turned off. It uses a direct drive spindle motor, which is far superior to the DC brush motors most players use. I've never had skipping problems, but did the firmware update anyway. Anyone having problems can go to the JVC websight and download a firmware update. You'll need a CD burner, if you don't have one they will send a disc with the update.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cannot play CDs - Sold by North Star Distributors on Amazon, July 12, 2005

I discovered, about two months after getting it, that it will not play CDs. Somehow the mod defeats them. I tried various discs of modern and older releases and none of them work.

I tried to give the Amazon seller a chance but the phone reaches another business and they do not return phone calls, their website fails to load anything.

DO NOT BUY ANY ITEMS FROM NORTH STAR DISTRIBUTORS or NORTHSTAR DISTRIBUTORS, however they spell it.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Picture quality and 4 Stars for build quality, June 11, 2004

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The JVC XVN410BK unit is very slim and the tray is very flimsy. The unit is 1 3/4"inches tall. I quickly connected the unit with no problems, but soon ran into a major problem when trying to open the tray to insert a DVD movie the tray would try to open but something was stopping it from doing so. I placed a call the seller and was given the Tech Support number to JVC ,but did not wait to speak a Tech person. Upon inspection of the tray I notice that the tray was misaligned. I lifted up on the front bottom edge and the tray opened and when the tray came out so did the clear plexiglass insert, which was only held in by some sticky tape that had loss it's stack and it would no longer stay in place. I open and closed the tray a few times to ensure that it was ok, which it seem to be ok, but now I am not confident that the tray will operate later trouble free and wondering if I should send it back to be on the safe side, but I would then be out of paying to ship it back to the seller and wait for a number of weeks to receive a replacement.

I decided to purchase a new DVD player, because my older model Toshiba would only play original pressed DVD/CD's meaning no CD/RW, DVD-R, or DVD+R of any type. I use a JVC in my bedroom and it plays everything and I can use the same remote.

JVC has really built a great DVD player. The XVN410BK has the very best picture and sound I have ever seen or heard. The unit is one of four new models for 2004 the 410BK is in the middle of the pack only surpassed by the 510BK, which only difference is the 510BK plays DVD Audio and DVD Ram disc. The 410BK and 510BK both have the DigiPure Circuitry High-bit/high-sampling (12-bit/108MHz) video D/A converter and DNR video noise reduction system, which means that you get the very best picture there is, other JVC models are not equipped with these new features. The 12 bit/108MHz D/A video processor is the very latest technology, with many other model and brands using the older 10 bit/54MHz D/A converter. The Video Fine Processor of the above models allow you to adjust 8 different video adjustments, such as DNR, DigiPure and many more. Believe me this unit has the very best picture there is.

I originally planed to purchase a multi disc DVD player form Panasonic, but decided to purchase another JVC, because of the quality and price of my last JVC DVD player. If it was not for the mishap with the tray I would give the 410BK 5 Stars. I will write another review soon to update my review. I give the 410BK 5 Starts for the picture and 4 Stars for the build quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great picture, October 10, 2004

This review is from: JVC XVN410BK Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
I haven't had any of the freezing problems that others have mentioned. I recently purchased this player after my last unit died after 5 years. I had alot of DVD's that would freeze with my old unit but since they would freeze at exactly the same point, I just assumed the disk was scratched. However, with this new unit, the movie played great. I even noticed a significantly improved picture over my old model. I am impressed with the improvements they have made in the last 5 years.

For the price, I decided that maybe I would be lucky and get a good machine. No way. The picture freezes, as everyone else says, for about 10-15 seconds every 15 or so minutes. How annoying. It is impossible to comfortably enjoy a movie. I usually take the advice of the other reviewers but being the eternal optimist that I am, I thought I would be lucky and tried anyway. Oops. I learned my lesson.

1.0 out of 5 stars Must be a design flaw, July 25, 2004
This review is from: JVC XVN410BK Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
Several reviewers have pointed to a problem with the unit freezing at chapter boundaries and also occasionally breaking up into large pixels. However, being an optimist, I figured this was just the few people that got a bad unit and there must be hundreds of others who have working units and didn't bother to write a review. Right? WRONG! I bought the XVN410BK's twin (the XVNP10S which has all the same stuff but adds multimedia card reader). It has all the same problems reported by the other reviewers. I'm guessing this is a design flaw in either the processor chip(s) or the laser/drive unit. Guess I'll be buying some other brand from now on!
