Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JVC XVN512SL DVD Player ( Silver ) (Electronics)
This is my third JVC DVD player and I love all of them (my other two are still going strong and have not given me a minute's problem). This unit plays slideshows made by "Movies on TV" software, which does not play on just any dvd player. In fact, one of my more expensive dvd-vcr/player-recorder machines will not play these slideshows. The JVC read my dvd-rws that had mp3s on it. It showed me all of the folders on the dvd and as I highlighted each folder, it showed me all of the files in the highlighted directory. It played the songs perfectly. The screen tells you how many folders are on your dvd, how many total songs are on the disc, how many songs are in each folder, what song is playing, and the elapsed time. The screen for commercial cds is not as informative, but I think there was something I had to do to have more than a "play" line showing. The unit, however, played the cd perfectly. Not only did this machine play my home-made slideshows, you can make a regular jpeg disk (by just copying jpg files to a dvd or cd) and the machine will not only display the pictures beautifully, but the default is for the machine to play all the pictures on the disk in slideshow format. You can stop the slideshow and zoom in to pictures too. There are so many options available on this machine, I haven't had time to try them all. If you are looking for a dvd player (it is NOT a dvd writer), I can't recommend this one enough. The machine I bought came in a silver that matched all my other equipment perfectly. It is only 1 3/4" high, so it will fit anywhere. It came with a set of A/V (R/W/Y) cables as well as 2 sets of audio cables (r/w only). It has connections that will use the better composite cables (RBG), and the lesser quality s-video cables, but does not ship with them. I used the regular a/v cables and the picture on my Toshiba TV was wonderful, whether playing home-made or commercial dvds. The unit comes with batteries for the very readable remote, and worked well with my One4All Universal remote as well. The instructions say that the unit plays only Region 1 dvds. I have not gone to the JVC web site to see if JVC has upgraded firmware to play dvds from other regions, because I only buy dvds made for region 1. Whether you are a techno-beginner or someone who wants to record tv onto a dvd and watch a dvd at the same time, this machine is for you. Finally, a word about Amazon: I chose free shipping and still got my unit within 36 hours of placing my order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a dvd player that actually plays dvd's, July 31, 2005
This review is from: JVC XVN512SL DVD Player ( Silver ) (Electronics)
This player does exactly what I wanted it to do; it plays dvd's without skipping or bailing out. It has all the usual bells and whistles that all the other single disc units have plus a remote that can be deciphered by a normal human. The last two units I purchased (neither one a JVC) refused to play several new dvd's or stopped them about 20 minutes into the movie. Not this one; it works fine.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great at first, but then went down....WAY DOWN, January 1, 2006

I was walking around town Christmas Day looking for a DVD Player, being the day it was, finding one was really hard. Until I stumbled upon the JVC XVN512SL DVD Player for sale at a store that was going out of business. It was brand new and still in the box, I bought it for a very low price and was excited to go home and watch my collection of DVDs.

At first it played my DVDs really well, the picture was great, not too dark and not too bright. The SET UP menus were very organized and easy to navigate through. The on-screen displays weren't annoying or obnoxious. Another thing I really liked was the luminating disc tray and the ability to be able to dim it.

It worked like magic the first six days. But I guess it chose to rest on the seventh day, because it stopped displaying any image on my TV. I tried everything to fix it, but unfortunately, those few days of repeatedly going back and forth between movie chapters, reversing and fast forwarding, and operating a good 3 to 5 hours a day, were too much for this poor DVD Player.

Luckily, the store hadn't closed for good yet, and I was able to exchange it. Even more lucky was the fact that they had no more of these in stock, so they allowed me to exchange it for a display Sony DVP-NS50P, which is also for sale on this site. That DVD Player turned out to be more suited to put up with my frequent usage and style of movie playing.

In conclusion, I will only recommend this DVD Player if you are aiming for VERY light usage. And even then I still wouldn't be sure it will be able to handle it in the long run.

UPDATE - October 2009: The Sony DVD player I replaced this with is still working strong despite all the light abuse it's gotten over the years. I carry it around the rooms in my house, and my father uses it almost everyday as well. The outside is a little dirty, and even though the internals of it have not been cleaned at all, it still works fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great, December 25, 2005
This review is from: JVC XVN512SL DVD Player ( Silver ) (Electronics)
This DVD player indeed is nice and stylish...very sharp picture, especially for the great price at $100 (retailing at $180). I am, however, going to purchase monster cable component video cables for an even better picture.

1.0 out of 5 stars el junko, December 13, 2005
This review is from: JVC XVN512SL DVD Player ( Silver ) (Electronics)
The DVD player works half the time, if you are lucky....when it gets warmed up, the dvd stops playing. I just use it to play cd's now...I will junk it when I buy a more expensive model from a competitor.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY JVC, October 21, 2005
This review is from: JVC XVN512SL DVD Player ( Silver ) (Electronics)
I bought this player and had problums with the unit. I returned it twice and had to pay shipping both times to send it to JVC for repair. They fixed the problums and low and behold now I can not open the dvd holder. Now they want me to pay for shipping again to send it back for repair again. I asked for a new one and they said no. VERY BAD SERVICE. Unit still does not work and I have now $75.00 in shipping cost too. Only one year old.
