Our yellow lab "Buddy" joined our lives 15 months ago as an eight week old pup. Yes, we know what labs are like, and at our age what where we thinking? We were thinking we thought we were done with only a old girl cat & and a loud parrot left. We had gone through a rough couple of years, with loosing two of our cats and three of our dogs. Old age catches up to animals to.
But, when we saw our buddy with the Ruffians orange fish dog toy hanging from his mouth as he came running up to us. Well, it was over for both my husband and I. Memories of ole' Sam our chocolate lab and all the crazy things he did in the six short years just went out of our minds.
We took him home with toy in mouth and thought how cute he was as he squeaked his loved toy. I will not exaggerate when I say this dog can CHEW!! He has been using the black hardest kong on the market by three months. But his loving orange fish carry not a missing anything, and that cute squeaky noise has stayed right along with it. If any negative thing were to be said, is don't be on the receiving end of my phone call if Buddy and Mr. Fish were playing. The squeak sound for some reason is only bad then. There hasn't been a dog toy stated "for tough chewers" that Buddy has had me return in pieces to pet stores as they state that "no way can he destroy this toy". The looks are all but funny when I come in & say "well this one made it 10 min.".
I have looked for a Mr. Orange fish @ every pet store and they have all but the fish. I now have to admit that I was the one that desqueked his toy by accident (I promise). It got caught in the vacuum & well he is now squeak less an Buddy thinks I am crazy when I tell him go get you squeaker toy. So, Santa will be filling up his stocking with a couple of orange squeakier fish just in case one gets attacked by the vacuum that doesn't loose suction, as I will always have one around for our Buddy! Best toy around!

My 7 year old german shepherd mix has had this toy for 6 and 1/2 years now, he takes it to bed every night and is madly in love with it. Its the only toy that he has had for more then 2 months ever. It looks very worn out, but it keeps up with him. When he wants to play (Fishy as we call it in this house) is the one we turn to. I just adapted a 5 month old Lab mix puppy and she already has her own fishy ( but would much rather play with her brothers) This toy is a MUST have!

Not durable in the slightest. My dog Sandy had the squeaker torn out in 3min and a piece torn off shortly after.

Welcome to the first international tough dog toy championship!

JW Pet Company Ruffians Fish Dog Toy, Large (Colors Vary)
Bailey, our 60lb shepherd/beagle (we think?) mutt, destroyed this thing in about 6 minutes. When she is presented with any object that emits a sound her sole purpose in life becomes to isolate what is making the sound, and obliterate it beyond recognition. Unfortunately she didn't have a problem doing that to this toy. What was mildly concerning, however, was that she was able to, with little effort, disembowel the squeaker which is I could see causing problems if your dog is prone to actually swallowing bits of toys it devours.

That being said, however, any responsible pet owner will keep an eye on their pet when they give it a new toy to watch out for things like this. I read reviews about people having to have thousand dollar surgeries on their pets because some companies toy was badly designed. No, stupid. Your brain was badly designed. Watch your pets carefully.

I'll be posting some pictures of the toy and Bailey to give folks an idea of what the fish was up against.

When I purchased this I also purchased a few other toys that had a "tough" reputation that I will also be leaving reviews on as the international tough dog toy championship continues. I'll paste in the names of those toys below.

To the Ruffian Fish's credit - it was apparently Bailey's favorite toy.....it's just a shame it had to be thrown away shortly after it was given to her.

Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Football - She hasn't yet paid much attention to this one. It doesn't make any noise, so that's probably why.

I would not recommend this toy. My dog destroyed in in about 10 minutes. I was hoping it would hold up since it is advertised as rough and tough, but perhaps it is better with smaller dogs.

My lab is about 55 lbs and she tore into this toy in about 30 minutes. Within 5 minutes she tore off the small fins on the tail. Then she went for the small holes that allow the toy to squeak. The holes are squared where it is attached, so she found it quite easy to get her teeth into it and rip it right out of the fish. I was very disappointed seeing this had so many good reviews.

We inherited this toy from our neighbor, who hasn't had dogs in years. Our Lab/Pointer mix is a destroyer of toys but well over a year later, this one is still in perfect condition, and that's after being outside full time and being several years old and played with before we got it (ok, it's now covered in mold, but the dog doesn't mind, I swear). This is absolutely her favorite toy and she has made no attempts at shredding it like she does with everything else we give her. It's a great one for throwing in the yard as it bounces well and has a really loud squeaker that sounds a lot like a duck call (ours is yellow and I swear you'd never guess it was a fish if you weren't told, so in our house, it's "duckie"). I think I'm going to order a few as spares in case duckie someday meets an untimely end, such as being attacked by a lawn tractor, or carried off by a near-sighted vulture, as I'm sure our pooch would be heartbroken to lose her absolute favorite toy (the next one might actually get called "fishy", who knows?).
