The editors of
Jabberock spent years researching articles and interviews in the popular media, biographies and memoirs, and even Web sites to cull the quotes in this book. They've amassed a collection of shouts and murmurs by a wide group of artists on a large spectrum of topics. From Bono's musings on God to Stevie Nick's feelings about songwriting, each phrase offers a unique and often entertaining perspective on both the behemoth social and emotional force known as rock-and-roll music and life itself. Pete Townshend's statement that "Rock is very, very important and very, very ridiculous...." and Johnny Rotten's admission that "I don't listen to music. I hate music...." are but a few of the insights proffered by myriad rock practitioners. The musicians' ideas, rants, and raves about music, sex, politics, fame, fortune, talent, and life offer a unique perspective on the art and practice of rock by those who know it most intimately.

According to Mick Jagger, rock'n'roll is "energy and three chords." Country music, says Hal Ketchum, is "three chords and the truth." You might say that quotation books are three chords (coverage, arrangement, and citations) and an index. These two books offer much for browsers but a little less for those in search of a particular quotation. Neither has speaker, topic, or key-word indexes, but both are arranged in chapters with catchy titles: "Rebels, Politics, and Punks," "Women in Rock," "Politics and Patriotism," and "Friends and Rivals." These are subdivided into smaller, similarly titled sections, e.g., "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys." Quotations are then presented along with the speaker's name and the year in which the remark was made. At the end of each volume, a list of the books, magazines, newspapers, and television programs used in the compilation is provided. These are great fun for music fans, but reference users may sing a different tune.?Carolyn M. Mulac, Chicago P.L.
