5.0 out of 5 stars Jousting the Jabberwocky
Daniel Coleman takes Lewis Carroll's poem and gives it a life of its own while remaining true to the initial writings. JABBERWOCKY tells the story of a young man named Tjaden. His desire, beyond marrying his childhood sweetheart Elora, is to become an Elite. The Elites are the ultimate fighting force of the kingdom and Tjaden has a good chance of making a name for...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decently written, too contrived
It's decently- to well-written book. It takes the famous Lewis Carroll nonsense poem and attempts to turn the nonsense into something sensible. It does succeed, but often the poem's nonsense words are used in a very contrived fashion in the book.

As one reviewer said, it's really best for a younger person. It does have a surprise ending which was...

5.0 out of 5 stars Jousting the Jabberwocky, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Jabberwocky (Kindle Edition)
Daniel Coleman takes Lewis Carroll's poem and gives it a life of its own while remaining true to the initial writings. JABBERWOCKY tells the story of a young man named Tjaden. His desire, beyond marrying his childhood sweetheart Elora, is to become an Elite. The Elites are the ultimate fighting force of the kingdom and Tjaden has a good chance of making a name for himself. Now throw in deception, action, mystery, true love, friendship, and not to mention the Jabberwocky itself and you will have an idea of everything this story entails. This novel kept me entertained from the first page to the last.

I wish it could have been just a bit longer, it wasn't because the story felt unfinished but because I wanted to spend more time with the characters. This book is perfect for anyone who is entranced by the world of Lewis Carroll. It is a well written story and is suitable for all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read for the whole family, April 3, 2011
This review is from: Jabberwocky (Kindle Edition)
This is a great book with plenty of excitement and entertainment for the entire family. It is creative and uses the original poem to introduce each chapter. I highly recommend it to all age levels. This book is a little short (only because I wanted more) but makes for a quick and enjoyable read. I read the book with my family taking turns.

Excellent read. I have had the opportunity to pre-read one of Mr. Colemans upcoming novels about the origins of the Mad Hatter, and I must say that I anticipate great things from this author. Great flow to the words, great creativity and storytelling. The fantasy realm will be enhanced with Mr. Colemans work.

I loved this book enough to buy it in print once I downloaded it and read it once. The writing is excellent, the characters are realistic, and you feel as thought you are riding along side Tjaden during his adventure. A great book for all ages! Although the writing is so detailed that my 10 year old didn't want to read it close to bedtime once he read the description of the bandersnatch (he has a very active imagination.) I am going to download book two, Hatter, right now....

5.0 out of 5 stars The jibberish has been explained., June 21, 2011

Lewis Carroll's poem of the same name was catchy but who could understand what it really meant?? Daniel Coleman not only explains it, he makes it come to life with a very inventive tale that weaves right into the details of Alice's Wonderland. Each stanza of the poem is expanded and defined in it's own section of the book.
As a huge fan of Alice and that quirky Wonderland, it was truly riveting to be immersed in the epic battle behind "Jabberwocky".

5.0 out of 5 stars Elite Adventure!, June 18, 2011
This review is from: Jabberwocky (Kindle Edition)
Wow! Loved it from start to finish. It really brought the poem to life and gave it meaning and depth. But it kept it fun and exciting the whole time. I've never before wanted to visit the wonderful world created by Lewis Carroll so badly. You know it is good when you are sad to finish it. I'll be reading this one again, and would also recommend for kids - both teen and pre-teen. The pace is quick, even though the plotting is deep. Really enjoyed the language and how it tied into the to poem!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Wonderful Young Author, April 4, 2011
This review is from: Jabberwocky (Kindle Edition)
This book was exciting, fun, and full of everything one would hope to find in a book. Daniel Coleman was able to take this fascinating poem and create a story that all will enjoy. This book was exciting enough that I did not want to put it down, but interesting enough that I wanted to stop and ponder it on occasion.

I got this when it was free so I began it with low expectations. However, before the end of the first chapter I was very surprised at how much I was enjoying the story. Although short, Daniel Coleman's Jabberwocky creates lovable characters and will immerse you in a fascinating world. I definitely recommend this fun, lighthearted, family-friendly read; and for Lewis Carol fans I would say this is a must read!

This was such a riveting short story that once I started reading it I couldn't stop. Innocence, friendship, love, deception, politics, monsters, knight in shinning armor and honor. What more could you ask for? I immediately ordered Hatter because I wanted more!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars- a wonderfully crafted tale!, June 3, 2011
This review is from: Jabberwocky (Kindle Edition)
Daniel Coleman has created a fantasy story that brings the poem "Jabberwocky" to life for readers.

Each section of this novella begins with a stanza from the poem, and the events mirror the phrasing in the poem. Coleman masterfully weaves the phrasings and ideas into the fantasy storyline in such a way that truly makes it pop off the page. The characterization is strong and well-suited to the length of the story. The author also weaves in extra context from Carroll's classic in the form of a confounding encounter with the Cheshire Cat.

I found the beginning started off somewhat slowly, and I had trouble initially getting into the story. I think the beginning section could have been streamlined a bit to get us into the story faster. The language used in the story is perfect for a fantasy novel, and the author has included a glossary that explains the meaning of some of the words used from the poem. The ending itself offered closure and food for thought, making this a very nicely crafted novella that is at once satisfying and thought-provoking. There were a few jumps in Tjaden's reasoning towards the end that I was slower to follow, but that is why he is an Elite and I'm not, I guess.

Truly irresistible and a quick read, this story is appropriate for adults and youth. This is definitely an author to watch!
