I'm a fan of the Jabra 5020 headset -- it fits very well and comfortably around my ear and I've enjoyed good reception when connected to both my Treo 680 and iPhone. But I've gone through two models, and both have broken. The earpiece seems to be the weak link in this headset, as it's broken twice in my pocket (from not very rough treatment).

I almost never write product reviews. But I have found this product to be the complete opposite of what many(most) of the reviews here describe.

I have owned numerous headsets for phone use, both wired and cordless. I have had several different bluetooth headsets. My first bluetooth headset was one of those "on the ear" types which are so popular. I think they are all about looks and no function. To me they are pretentious. I believe one reviewer used the adjective "Hollywood" to describe them. I used that one briefly and then discarded it. I then obtained the Jabra BT500. That was the first headset I found to be pleasant to use, functional, and not just a gimmick. When I saw the BT5020 I thought it looked like a great upgrade. Then I read all the negative reviews here and had second thoughts. But, in the end, I followed my own instincts and trusted no one and bought one. Boy am I glad I did! The build-quality of this piece is superb. The matte black finish, angles and lines make it very sleek and gorgeous! It is so comfortable you will probably forget it's there after a period of time! It is smaller and lighter than my BT500.

I am not sure what all these reviews are about the poor sound-quality and reception. I have absolutely no interference or static whatsoever on incoming calls. In fact, it is crystal clear, even more so than using the phone itself! I have never had anyone even realized I was using a hands-free device. My wife is the most astute. She always complains about the sound quality and "echo-like" effect of my bluetooth sets. With this one she doesn't even know I am using it.

The only possible negative I can think of would be the rubber piece that fits in the ear canal seems kind of flimsy. And I wish they made different sizes.

But, in summary, if you are considering buying your first bluetooth headset you cannot go wrong with this one. If you are thinking about upgrading you will be amazed at what you've been missing once you try the Jabra BT5020. Highly recommended!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good looks -- Terrible performance! get at 250V, July 23, 2007
This review is from: Jabra BT 5020 Executive Bluetooth Headset (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Longtime user of Jabra BT200 with two years of great use -- most of time people didn't know I was on a Bluetooth. Thought the BT5020 better looks and better claim of wind resistance was a great upgrade. Big mistake. More wind noise, and constant buzzing on the line. Constant "What did you say?" from the moment of use from anyone I called. New ear style is comfortable, but the darn thing does not lock and rotates every time you put it on. I have replaced with a Jabra BT250V, the replacement for my old model -- Back to great sound on both ends.
Sorry to see Jabra sound quality bad on the new model, but stick with the 250V!

5.0 out of 5 stars Light weight, comfortable to wear and great talk and standby times, June 30, 2007

This review is from: Jabra BT 5020 Executive Bluetooth Headset (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I really like the "behind the ear" headsets, they seem more comfortable to me so I decided to upgrade to the Jabra BT5020. I moved from the Jabra BT500 to the BT5020 and really like the BT5020. I like the size and solid black color, it's very unassuming, never cared for the startrek look of the other headsets. The volume is loud and clear. The headset is very easy to wear for long periods of time because of it's light weight. It has GREAT talk and standby time and comes with a AC Adapter and a USB cable for charging, so you can have the AC Adapter at home and the USB cable at work or with your laptop for charging.

I had a bit of trouble pairing it to my Treo 700Wx but got it working, it also paired fine with my wifes Motorola Razor and my kids Samsung U740.

Great unit, good features and a good price!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great overall headset., March 11, 2008

This review is from: Jabra BT 5020 Executive Bluetooth Headset (Wireless Phone Accessory)
My first headset was an older Jabra model which I was generally very satisfied with, but I replaced last year with a Jawbone when I got an iPhone because it didn't work entirely properly with the iPhone. After having a generally bad experience with the Jawbone, I recently got this newer Jabra BT5020 to try out, and I am nothing short of very satisfied with this headset.

For starters, the Jabra fits nicely over and behind the ear as one unit. One advantage to this one-piece design is the superior sturdiness it affords. And with a little practice, it gets very easy to simply "slap" this headset on and start using it. I find this especially important when I have an incoming call and the headset isn't on my head... it's imperative to have a headset that I can don quickly before losing the call.

The earpiece on the Jabra BT5020 is a bit different from the one I had previously. The older one had replaceable gel tips of various sizes that one could choose according to preference. These tips stayed on very firmly early on, though in time they were increasingly prone to fall off as they aged and wore out. The BT5020 comes with a couple flimsy tips that slip on, but they are pretty much pointless since they come off too easily. But that's ok. You can wear this headset without the tips, and I've actually gotten to prefer not having an ear tip inside my ear. And the sound quality is simply superb, IMO. The ear tip rotates around to accommodate which ear you are wearing it on. In practice, you can't really get the tip to reliably face "inwards", but that hasn't actually proven to be a problem since the volume level is more than adequate. I usually have my phone set to less than half the max volume. The headset itself has its own volume adjustment as well.

My only disappointment is that the charging socket isn't the small "standard" USB type. Ideally, I'd like to be able to reuse the same USB cable that I use for a number of other devices that have the standard USB connection to reduce the cable clutter, but no luck here. The supplied USB cable is a very short one, so I find it convenient to plug into the back of my keyboard.

Overall, this is a great headset with excellent sound quality and ample volume. While not the lightest of designs, it does fit comfortably over and behind the ear, and is not prone to falling off due to the nature of the design (which actually fits much like many hearing aids).

3.0 out of 5 stars Great form, poor function, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Jabra BT 5020 Executive Bluetooth Headset (Wireless Phone Accessory)
UPDATED Feb 9th 2008:

Well the BT5020 is now dead, I'm sending it back to jabra and we will see from there what happens. Following my initial review I returned the unit for replacement once and that fixed some of the sound issues, not all of them but enough that I was acceptably pleased. Over the 6 months I found the unit to be functional and seldom did it offer me reason to complain, the sound was clear and I could be heard without many ever offering complaint, unless I was outdoors in a wind, but I think some aspects are to be understood and tolerated.

I will note though, using the dual connection capability was nice, but glitchy, especially when hooked to a nextel and using direct connect, then things truly got fouled up and generally connections were lost to the phones and often calls.

Over all I won't lower or raise my review on this unit, it worked when it worked and while far from stellar, I think for 30 bucks it was acceptable.

________________________________________________________________

I'm new to the BT ear piece market, this being my second in the past few months. My first was/is the Jabra BT500, which is very enjoyed... once I got used to tolerating the eargel discomfort, and no adjustability for fit. So my hopes were high with the BT5020, in getting rid of the eargels and allowing for some angle and length of speaker position, would fix my comfort levels.

So my first impressions of the BT5020 was wow, this is comfortable, it weighs less, no eargel and the size is very balanced with the over all package. Turned on the power and it started in pair mode, and paired without a glitch or bump with my Sanyo 8400. So far so good, I was working in the yard, so decided to leave it on and see how I liked the fit and feel. And to speak straight, I forgot I had it on and got the sudden reminder of it real quick when my wife called, the vibrate alert went off (I'd forgotten it had vibrate alert) and I nearly came unglued tell I recalled what was doing it. This thing is that comfortable, no feeling like my ear is plugged up, no strange pulling or pushing, or slippage to keep telling me I have something on/in my ear.

The phone call however set off the first warning signs, there was very distinct static and crackling, this with my phone on my hip on the same side as the earpiece. I kept it in mind but kept working for a few hours before deciding to go and really play with my new earpiece.

I started conducting some tests around the house, called customer service of my phone company, and figured to kill two birds with one stone. I had the phone on a shelf at the same level as my ear, about 3 feet away. The static wasn't noticed this time so I began moving around the room and it returned. After 9-12 feet distance, the static was so bothersome that if the CSR had answered, I'd not have been able to conduct business. I tried moving it closer and at different angles with varying results and little improvement. Static wasn't noticed as a background noise or white noise type, but direct distortion of voice and or background music (I was on hold a while), it changed with the volume/beat of the sound I was supposed to be hearing clearly.

To say the least, right now I'm not pleased; I truly like the feel, fit, weight and appearance of this headset. There is a notable creak from the flexible portion but nothing I will notice after a few days of using something. The button position for those used to the BT500, as I am, is a little different as it is a bit harder to tap the answer/end button, for you can't really just pinch the end of the mic area and catch the button, as you can with the BT500, but those are small things and a few days of playing will pan out if they become larger issues.

I've worn wired headsets for years, mostly Plantronic or Jabra versions'; so moving to BT has been a learning experience. I'm not going to give up on the BT5020 just yet, I'm going to further test it over the weekend, at work where I'll have multiple other phones and radios on or around my person, at times talking on various radios of various frequencies. I think this will truly tell me if the BT5020 can hold mustard, or if it gets packed up on Monday and sent back, something I'm usually ill tolerant of doing unless something is truly truly broken and/or a turd.

Bought the BT5020 to use with my Blackberry Pearl, to replace my Jabra BT250. Fit/finish/form and comfort are much better (for my ear) than the 250. However, the functionality of this 5020 is horrible. There is massive static, crackling and general comms interruptions even when the phone is 12 inches from the headset. Totally unacceptable. On the calls I've made with this headset, the other party has said it sounded like I was "on the moon" or orbiting earth in the space shuttle. Unacceptable and a total disappointment.

After reading many reviews on so many different bluetooth devices, I decided on this one because I've owned a corded Jabra before and still use and love it. This Jabra BT5020 is very comfortable. Even with my windows open in my car, I can still be heard by the person I am taking to, and I can hear them very clearly. Connecting my cell phone to this Jabra couldn't have been more simple. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants comfort, simplicity, and durability.

Its a very comfortable design, but the quality compared to other models just isn't there. It sounds scratchy (outgoing & incoming) even when less than a foot away from the paired device. Maybe I got a lemon, but this is pretty bad.

I don't know how anyone could write a positive review about this ear piece. The sound quality is horrible, my friends tell me it sounds like I am in a tunnel (when they can hear me at all), it drops the connection to my phone while I am talking, and the talk time is only about 30 per charge.
