2.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily uncomfortable!!!!
I just bought a BT8040 as it was the only Bluetooth earpiece available with A2DP support. I was getting sick and tired of listening to my music through my old Bluetooth earpiece sounding worse than playing a CD over the phone - seriously, standard Bluetooth earpieces only support audio quality that matches that of a phone conversation, optimized for voice. A2DP was here...

2.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily uncomfortable!!!!, July 13, 2008
This review is from: Jabra BT8040 Bluetooth Headset Black (Electronics)
I just bought a BT8040 as it was the only Bluetooth earpiece available with A2DP support. I was getting sick and tired of listening to my music through my old Bluetooth earpiece sounding worse than playing a CD over the phone - seriously, standard Bluetooth earpieces only support audio quality that matches that of a phone conversation, optimized for voice. A2DP was here to fix that.

I grabbed this BT8040 with mixed hopes. It was new so I expected it to be the combined knowledge of all Bluetooth earpieces to date.

Nope.

It's THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE THING I have EVER subjected my ear to! Pretty much right up there with every other dang earbud I've ever tried to use. In fact, touching my ear, I can still feel the stinging it left over the course of about a 20 minute "let's see how cool this thing is" session OVER TEN HOURS AGO. I tried all three included sizes of "ear gels" - small, medium, and large. There is no perceivable difference in sizes - you have to look at the "S", "M", and "L" markings on the inside of the pieces to tell which you're looking at. It appears that the only thing that changes is the size of the "pull ring" that you use to get the gels on and off with. I don't get it.

It works fine though. Intuitive audio notifications for button presses for easy eyes-free usage. Easy pairing - I paired it with a second device without needing to download a manual (second device pairing instructions aren't included! You have to turn it off, then hold down the call button until a second startup beep is heard, for pairing mode after first start-up). Still the same "0000" pairing key though - more than likely, anyone interested could sniff your conversations. I'd've figured they'd have a way to change that by now.

Music quality is also extremely good for what I'd come to expect given my previous Bluetooth audio encounters. It sounds, overlooking the pain of having it in your ear, like a good pair of, well, earbuds - just with one piece instead of two. However, it totally flipped out when I tried using its supposed "dual device" capability - when they both tried to play audio (something it should be able to do), the audio got completely distorted and inaudible, as if it couldn't make up its mind which device to pay attention to. But if I stopped one, it seamlessly transitioned over to the other. Good for ease of use, bad for trying to take a phone call while listening to your Pocket PC's music player.

Well, despite the fact that it works, and it mostly works well, I could not tolerate the pain of keeping that thing in my ear longer than the 20 minutes I spent enjoying its interesting features. It's also rather overpriced for what it is - you can get a STEREO version of last generation's A2DP Jabra earpiece, the BT8010, on eBay for the same price. And that's exactly what I did. I returned it to the place I bought it, got a refund, then went home and burned that same amount I just spent, on the BT8010 with stereo attachment. The 8010 also has a ear loop, not a stinking "ear gel", which will inevitably make it much more comfortable and stable.

Two stars (instead of 1) for the features it has. It is just absolutely intolerable for regular in-ear use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best headset I have used, August 16, 2010

The Jabra Bluetooth Headset BT8040, is an ok headset. The fit around the ear was clunky and it kept falling off of my ear. Voice quality was good. I used this for a very short while and switched to a Jawbone II and have been happy with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable but could be better, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Jabra BT8040 Bluetooth Headset Black (Electronics)
The size is right, earpiece took a minute to find the right fit and the incoming sound and reception was great. However, everyone I spoke to said it sounded like I had something covering my mouth. They could barely understand what I was saying. I tried adjusting the settings and volume, however nothing worked. I think this is because the microphone is positioned on the inside of the device; which means it is pressed against your cheek when worn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect Bluetooth for a Budget Price, September 29, 2008

Long story Short: I tried over 15 pieces, lost money on most. This piece not only works, and everywhere, it also has a good distance from phone, works on the road in my car with noise around, and is really small. Also, I have it paired with 2 phones and My mac ( computer ) and ALWAYS works.
Soudn quality ? I hear very well, people when noisy say my voice is a little different ( and that's the electronics in this product woring their magic ).
Battery life is ok for a small piece like this one, around 2 talk hours.
There is nothing I've seen or tried for this price ( maybe other work similar, but are over 2x the price ). Every friend that I showed it to, bought one and they all love it.
I was really giving up on bluetooth. This headset is it ! Good luck

4.0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Headset For The Cost, September 19, 2008
This review is from: Jabra BT8040 Bluetooth Headset Black (Electronics)
Ok, so this is like the 6th headset that I have had in the past 3 years. I use it w/my Samsung Instinct and I haven't had any complaints of people not being able to hear me or anything(this was common on my Jawbone, it is possible that I got a dud though). I am always doing something and don't have time to have a handset to my ear so this is why I purchased this after the Jawbone was lost. I've been using this for about 5 days now so I will try to give the best breakdown that I can.

Sound - the person I am talking to seems a tad low to me, but I think that'c b/c I haven't found the exact volume I want the headset to be @ so that they won't hear an echo.

Noise Cancellation - nobody even asks me anymore if I am on a headset or why is my phone breaking up.

Battery Life - Lasts me from 7am - 10pm. I may talk on my phone 2 hours per day, maybe more. The rest of the time it is continuously on and it never reminds me w/that annoying beep that the battery is about to go off.

Comfort - The majority of the time, I forget it is there.

Echo - I haven't heard a complaint of one yet.

Static - Haven't witnessed any.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, July 14, 2008

This review is from: Jabra BT8040 Bluetooth Headset Black (Electronics)
Brilliant design, performs flawlessly. Its really small, you ought to see it to really understand how small this thing is. It comes with 6 interchangeable ear tips, that are shaped slightly differently from the regular IEMs. These dont go in so deep, and they have a loop on the back that keeps it in place. I can tell you one thing, it works. I have had no discomfort whatsoever, I have spoken for hours on these without even realizing I have them on. This completely beats headsets with earloops as its so much more convenient and compact.

The sound quality is great, DSP helps, its not gonna help you much with wind on your face with window down, ambient noises like low volume TV, radio, or road noise, it works great. A2DP is a nice bonus, good for those on the go videos on your phone. The charge indicators are nice, glowing a different color based on how much charge is left, the buttons have a nice click to them and are very easy to press.

Overall, I have no complaints whatsoever, and its one of the best headsets I have used so far. For the price (50-60$) Highly recommended.

I've used Jabra products for years and have always been happy with them. The past few headsets/earpieces of this design they've sold have had buttons on the sides, and with heavy use, the "squeezing" action caused them to pop apart. This design, with the button on top, solves this problem. BUT. The headset that I received came in a plastic bag with a note "explaining" that to keep costs down, the vendor had eliminated all manufacturer's packaging. Sound suspicious? I thought so. The sound quality was poor, with a light static background, and the volume controls barely worked. When I tried to return it, guess what? I needed the original packaging! I ordered a new one from Jabra. Works great! Buyer beware!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Music - not so much for talking on the phone!, May 30, 2008
This review is from: Jabra BT8040 Bluetooth Headset Black (Electronics)
I have a Palm Centro cell phone and needed a A2DP headset for music and talking. I searched high and low for a mono bluetooth that had the A2DP technology. There were only a few available, so I chose this one. The fit is very comfortable and I like that you dont need a hook to hold it on your ear. But this headset is horrible in the car to talk on with the window down. It cuts out alot with wind noise. I don't recommend this for conversations but it is good for listening to music.
