4.0 out of 5 stars I loved it, but....
I have owned 4 of these. Well, I actually owned an EarBoom by Jabra first. When it died (after about 6 or 9 months), I bought this little baby. My husband loved it so much he got one too. Mine died after a month, so I took it back and had it replaced. Then his died, and we had it replaced. Then my replacement died, and his did too. In all cases, the cause of...

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, if you have the patience for it
I used this ear piece for about 3 months feeling pretty satisfied. I never had complaints about sound quality, and if fact I could hear better using it than without. I used this ear piece for about 3 months feeling pretty satisfied. I never had complaints about sound quality, and if fact I could hear better using it than without. It's true that no matter what size, the ear gel become uncomfortable after a while. And if you use your cell phone as your primary phone like I do, that's a big concern. Also, the winder on this thing is complete GARBAGE. I can't tell you how many times it would not wind up or unwind...the cord got tangled, and finally the whole thing just stopped working. I bought this to replace the other Jabra I had that didn't have the winder because I hated the cord getting caught on everything...now I don't like either of them. Guess I'm back to trying to find another one...

In all cases, the cause of failure was the join between the wire and the set itself. The flex point ruptures eventually, and then the wires are exposed and quickly break, resulting in a loss of either microphone or speaker function, eventually. This is very frustrating. Luckily, they have an excellent warranty, and the guys at RadioShack have been great about it.

On the other hand, this is a great product. The earGel can be a little uncomfortable at first, but after you use it for a week or so, you start to forget you're wearing it. The winder is a wonder, although a touch finicky, but if you treat it with respect and make a habit of always fully extending it (gently)before retracting it, you shouldn't have any problems. I am currently going through the agony of either replacing it again (this time buying it again since I've dithered long enough to slip out of warranty) or trying a new one. I already have a big enough collection of (sometimes expensive) headsets that didn't work for me.

Luckily the price has come down considerably to match the quality, although personally I would have preferred the opposite.

2.0 out of 5 stars like the winder, but poor sound quality, August 10, 2004

This review is from: Jabra EarSet WindUP with 2.5mm Universal Headset Jack (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Con: I am disappointed in the poor sound quality of this device. Peoples voices are muffled and hard to discern. It sounds as though everyone is talking with a hand over their mouth on my end, but I have had no complaints about how I sound on the other end. Maybe the mic is good and the speaker bad, or maybe I've just got a defective product.

Pro: As the winder goes, I like it a lot. It is small and lets you put the whole thing in your pocket without tangle. This winder works like a miniblind. You pull both ends of the cord out a tad, then it retracts. I've never had a problem operating it.

This comes as a disappointment as I had a good experience with my last and similar jabra earbud - sounded good, and fit well - much better than my 'body glove' (too big for my ear, fell out constantly, and hurt) or my 'plantronics' (would always fall out, impossible to put in in time to answer a call).

4.0 out of 5 stars I have strange ears..., October 26, 2004
This review is from: Jabra EarSet WindUP with 2.5mm Universal Headset Jack (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Since I have odd ears, the options with the eargels seemed perfect for me. I haven't had any problems with the retraction feature or with sound quality. I would recommend the WindUP with no hesitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound and comfort, October 24, 2004

I really like this unit. The sound is great and the person who I call can hear me well. The wind up takes some getting used to but works just fine. Earpiece is very comfortable. Highly Recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still in good shape after a year, but..., December 6, 2005

This review is from: Jabra EarSet WindUP with 2.5mm Universal Headset Jack (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I'm forever on the endless search for retractable headsets for my cell phone. I came across this about a year ago after breaking the winder on an older set (which I absolutely loved but can't find it anymore).

I was a bit skeptical on the mic quality since it's on the ear piece itself, plus I'm a soft speaker and I have long hair so that doesn't help in the matter. Surprisingly, the person on the other end can hear me quite clearly. The only time there are problems is if there is too much background noise on my end.

I have to knock it down to 3 stars because the retractable device needs improvement. You have to pull from both ends of the cord to lengthen it, and again for it to retract. This is not something that you want to do while driving. If you don't feed the wires back in on it's correct side, it'll jam up the winder which is a pain to undo at times.

Overall, it's great to keep in my car and it's better than having a headset that does not retract. I'll continue my search for the perfect set in the mean time.

2.0 out of 5 stars great fit, flimsy spool, September 15, 2005
This review is from: Jabra EarSet WindUP with 2.5mm Universal Headset Jack (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I've had this EarSet for about a year. The fit is very comfortable and the sound is good. People on the other end can hear me well, although I have had complaints about wind noise from my car A/C system.

The worst part of the EarSet is the flimsy design. The reel that holds the cord is not very well designed. Mine broke after about a month. Getting the wire to retract back into the reel can be a hassle. Sometimes the wire would feed down the side of the reel, causing it to jam. After it broke, I disassembled the reel and have used it since by just wrapping the cord around my phone.

I've used an "earset" for several months. The windup feature was the big attraction for me. Despite my suspicions, people all tell me that - at least on my instrument - the tiny ear-level microphone comes over loud and clear. I wish there were more options in the windup category, because of the numerous reviews that in the long run the Jabra wires will fail. I believe I had a cheaper, non-Jabra-brand wind up before this one, and it just fell apart in a few weeks. As others have pointed out, internet prices by August 2005 range anywhere from the original $29 list to $10 closeouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT just wish you could have an answer button..., September 21, 2005
This review is from: Jabra EarSet WindUP with 2.5mm Universal Headset Jack (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I lost my first JabraWind Up and bought an inexpensive BodyGlove piece. Now I am ordering another JabraWind Up. It's comfortable and good reception. Easy to store never tangles. I had my other one over a year before I lost it!! I just wish it had a hang up and answer button, but I will trade comfort (It stays in your ear and easily inserts!) and reception for that on feature : ) I highly recommend it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Wires exposed., July 16, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jabra EarSet WindUP with 2.5mm Universal Headset Jack (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I experienced the same defect that M. Camblee and others wrote about. The notched, rubber sheathing that is designed to protect the cable at the point that it enters the earpiece is not sturdy enough. When wound up, the earpiece counter-balances the spoiling apparatus, causing the earpiece to flop around too much. This puts stress on the notched, rubber sheathing near the earpiece. Over time, that sheathing cracked and exposed the wires for the mic. Now, when plugged in, the speaker works, but the mic does not. My friend, who has a version of the earpiece without the spoiling mechanism, i.e., just a plain wire, does not report the same problem.
