Well, that's happened here.
First, let me say that I really really like this little SPEAK 510 and won't be ditching it any time soon. The sound quality for music is way better than I was expecting. For calls, the sound is exactly what it was expecting. All the LED lights and little touches just launch this product into GOLDEN territory.
LEDs let you know if Bluetooth is on or connected. LEDs let you know if it's charging; and one tap on the battery icon lights up all the LEDs to let you know the charge level. Volume up or down lights up or turns off LEDs in a circle around the speaker. All functions work well and give you at least LED feedback; and sometimes it will give you audio responses as well.
For music output on the SPEAK 510: Bluetooth out of my iPhone and USB out from my MacBook Pro are comparable. The MacBook can push the speaker louder, but the quality is the same: awesome! But what I find really amusing is that if I connect my MacBook to the SPEAK 510 via Bluetooth, it turns the music into Hold Music... for calls and the sound quality. I cracked up!
Anyway, I hooked up the SPEAK to my MacBook via USB and fired up a movie. The sound quality is 300% better than the little built in speakers on my laptop. And there no comparison to open air sound out of my iPhone versus the SPEAK. The SPEAK cranks.
For calls, it works great as a speakerphone. Incoming calls are a breeze. You can answer, mute, and end calls with just a tap. Volume adjustments are similarly simple.
But where it falls flat...
You can't dial out using the SPEAK 510.Read more ›
As a last gasp attempt to get it to work, I upgraded the firmware. This is a bit of a challenge as I am a Mac user without access to a PC. Since I just removed my windows VM (needed space), it took a few days to get the speakerphone near a PC. (Jabra - it would really be nice if you would create mac versions of your software). The firmware upload software is well designed making it very easy to perform this upgrade (aside from the lack of Mac support). Unfortunately, the firmware upgrade simply did not help.
I will confess that everyone what helped diagnose this issue are iPhone users. The reason I share this is it is possible that there is an incompatibility with the iPhone bluetooth software. Seems remote, but a possibility.
Also, we tried the speakerphone in quiet environments, noisy ones, two callers, 3+ callers.Read more ›
#1 Speaker Sound quality - I love the sound from this unit - the deep bass and crisp quality make it really enjoyable to listen to movies etc. on my laptop. I mean sure, it's nice to hear your call in high quality too, but I think Jabra went well above on speaker quality for this speaker phone to where it works beautifully as an external speaker.
#2 Headphone jack - In contrast to another reviewer's negative perception of the headphone jack, I love it. What this allows me to do is to use the unit as a pass through for the audio from my computer to my headphones, but when a call comes through on my phone (when paired via bluetooth), it interrupts the audio and alerts me to the fact that I have an incoming call, which I might miss if I was connected directly to the PC.
#3 No feedback loop - The difference between this as a mic and speaker setup for use with Skype, and the setup that is in my $1500 Dell laptop, is gigantic. Previously, when using Skype on my laptop, I had to use headphones to use Skype because of the feedback loop that causes either echos or high-pitched whistling sounds. I believe this was a combination of proximity of the mic to the speaker and incorrect boost levels. This is not an issue with the Jabra Speak 510.
#4 Internal rechargeable battery - This affords the speakerphone true mobility, since it does not need to be connected via USB to be used. I threw it in the car the other day and used it flawlessly as a speakerphone while driving, making me feel, and actually be, a safer motorist.
#5 Bluetooth - This is the feature that cause me to call this product a lifesaver.Read more ›
