Editorial Reviews

Review

Illustrator Stimpson’s authorial debut gives Jack and the Beanstalk a needed overhaul, infusing the story with humor, warmth, and an evocative Depression-era setting... A lovely if ambitious bedtime readaloud whose cinematic artwork enthralls.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Stimpson’s authorial debut is a remaking of the timeless fairy tale that includes both a wonderfully fleshed-out city circa the 1930s and an ending that is happy for everyone.
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

This is a completely charming book. The artistry of Colin Stimpson feels like it's from a day gone by when life was simpler and imaginations were the best form of entertainment. His drawings and paintings are from the highest level of illustration that have the ability to transport you magically into another world. To me, this book has all the charm of the early Disney movies. A pure entertainment pleasure!!

This is a beautiful book written and illustrated by Colin Stimpson. A charming and imaginative retelling of the fairy tale. The illustrations are masterful, the kind I would get lost in as a child. I love this book and highly recommend it!

The art work was really nice. I thought it was going to be a fresh take on the original, however the author removed a couple of the elements that made the original story so good. The story was made too "safe", even for my 3-1/2 year old, it never really peaked.

I enjoyed Colin's artwork, but I suppose from reading, listening and digesting scripts and writings over the years, his own genius had to evolve. It is definately a must for the wish list if you enjoy a good hardcover with the whole kit and kaboddle.

Jack and the Baked Beanstalk
by Colin Stimpson

If you liked the original Jack and the Beanstalk story, you will love this modern version of the same fairy tale with a twist! The illustrations also add an animated sense of magic and wonder to the story.

The family business was struggling to survive, so when Jack used their last few pennies on magic baked beans, his mom got angry and threw them out the window. That little mistake grew into a GIGANTIC problem. Then ultimately, the lesson learned is that the best things in life are free!
