5.0 out of 5 stars A credible and entertaining retelling of the classic tale, with gorgeous illustrations
Whenever I choose a fairy tale book for my preschooler, I go by two criteria - one, that the story remains recognizable in its essence (to the original) ,and two, that the illustrations have to be impressive, with lots of color, and details. This retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk fulfills both criteria. The story as retold by John Cech, remains faithful to the original,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Jack and the Beanstalk by John Cech
My daughter is 6-LOVES Jack and the Beanstalk-BUT this was not her favorite version due to the illustrations. The story is good-slightly different spin in that the wife is a human and doesn't really care for her Ogre husband. She eventually leaves her husband, comes down the stalk, and becomes great friends with Jack's mom.
The famous "Fee Fi Fo Fum" is a little...

5.0 out of 5 stars A credible and entertaining retelling of the classic tale, with gorgeous illustrations, October 2, 2009
This review is from: Jack and the Beanstalk (Classic Fairy Tale Collection) (Hardcover)
The story as retold by John Cech, remains faithful to the original, and quite creative. The language flows well, and is easy for a young child to follow the story, despite being quite lengthy. The illustrations by Robert Mackenzie are simply beautiful, with lush strokes bringing the story vividly to life. The giant is suitably scary and intimidating whilst young Jack is convincingly precocious. I love collecting fairy tales, and though we got this from the library, I'll soon be adding it to our ever-growing collection of fairy tales.

Wow this was a home run. My daughter is 2 1/2 and just recently into fairy tales. She absolutely loved this the first time she heard it, and she asks to hear it every night. It's long but well written and it fascinates her. We had a play date with another 2 1/2 year old little girl and she was totally riveted when I read it. Highly recommended.

A classic tale beautifully retold and incredibly illustrated. I have purchased a number of books to welcome a new baby and/or to celebrate a child's birthday.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book, November 18, 2010
This review is from: Jack and the Beanstalk (Classic Fairy Tale Collection) (Hardcover)
The illustrations make this book worthy of any collection. While the story is slightly different from the version I always read as a child, it's hardly noticeable with such beautiful pictures that draw in the reader. My daughter loves it. I love it.

The famous "Fee Fi Fo Fum" is a little different too.
The illustrations are good, but not clearly defined as my daughter prefers. She likes facial expressions, eye color, just very clear details in general. She also prefers bright, vivid colors which this book doesn't really have. The coloring is beautiful to me, but not her "thing".
The Jack in the Beanstalk version by John Kellogg is her favorite.
