Gr 2-4-Wishbone, a "well read" Jack Russell terrier, reminisces about his puppyhood and his first literary adventures with fairy tales. This inaugural book in the series is set four years before the original TV and book series, when the dog's owner and best friend Joe is in third grade. Taken to school for show-and-tell, the excited pup accidentally leaves his favorite chew toy in the classroom. As in all of Wishbone's adventures, this contemporary crisis segues into a literary parallel, here a footloose version of poor country boy Jack's quest to retrieve his family's stolen goods from the giant. A talking dog, paltry puns, and a thoroughly didactic pair of stories-one a somewhat fleshed-out fairy tale and the other about a headstrong puppy facing up to a towering school janitor-combine to create a disjointed and not particularly compelling chapter book. Superior versions of "Jack and the Beanstalk" abound.-John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX

My second grade son's favorite book,
This review is from: Jack and the Beanstalk (Wishbone-The Early Year) (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book for parents who think their kids are ready to try reading on their own. My son rates this book above the Magic Tree House series and surprisingly above the Pokemon books by Tracey West. I wish they would get on the ball and put out more Wishbone The Early Years books.
