This 40-minute retelling of The Master Thief is set in the 1930s with African American actors. In a small American town, a poor laborer's son named Jack falls in love with the dentist's daughter and wishes to marry her. When Jack asks her father, the dentist, if he may have her hand in marriage, he is told he must first have money, so Jack sets off to find his fortune. He outwits a farmer and a band of thieves and earns the reputation of being a "master thief," as well as acquiring a lot of money. Jack returns to claim his bride, but the dentist, still not wanting Jack to marry his daughter, gives Jack several "impossible" tasks to perform. When Jack succeeds at all of them, the dentist has no choice but to allow him to marry his daughter. This tale is full of humor and ingenuity. However, during one of Jack's deceptions, he pretends to lynch himself, which is a disturbing visual. Jack and the Dentist's Daughter is a beautiful production in the From the Brothers Grimm series, and is a video that parents and children age 7 and older can enjoy together. --Peggy Maltby-Etra

Using clever tricks, Jack proves to be a "master thief," steals the bootleggers' and robbers' money, buys himself a car and new clothes and heads home to claim Emily's hand. But the dentist sets more obstacles in Jack's path to true love that call on him to proves his persistence and ingenuity. This review is from: Jack & the Dentist's Daughter [VHS] (VHS Tape)
You know the story, but you will be on the edge of your seat and watch every minute to be sure. A very delightful take on an age old story. The Davenport version brings reality to the fairytale.
