Sensual Sensibilities & Genre Awareness,
This review is from: Jack & Dora Do L.A. (Kindle Edition)
Single people everywhere often find themselves at the mercy of whim & fancy when it comes to intimate relationships. Jack & Dora are no different. They live in the seductive city of Los Angeles where fame, fortune, & greed reign supreme in orgasmic euphoria. Love & romance are nowhere to be found. That is until these two unsuspecting yet consenting adults discover each other. Adult readers looking to experience something more than dismembered body parts hurling through the air may find they can relate to the characters in this fast paced, sexy story. They will certainly find a reason to hope for something more satisfying than bloody vampire lust. Jack & Dora Do L.A. is provocative. So is real life. Take a bite out of that!

I recently read JACK AND DORA DO L.A. by Robert Szeles. It begins in a very interesting way, with the gods of LA looking down at Los Angeles from above. All of the gods are very serious and busy, except two, Love and Romance, who nobody takes seriously any more. These two are looking for their next targets in the city, hoping to gain the respect of their fellow gods. This is how the comedy begins. I loved this fairy tale opening and that's why I kept reading. Of course I am not going to reveal the plot. I just want to tell you that the book is very easy to read. The characters, Dora and Jack, are average people, like you and me. We see and meet such people every day. Jack is a writer and wants to get a job at famous TV show, Dora is just a waitress but wants to start a jewelry business. But the traditional approach ends here, because Dora is polyamorous (meaning she likes being with more than one person in a relationship) and Jack is ready to give up on finding the love of his life. There is a certain approach in creating a plot, when a story of a couple gets reversed: the male character is rescued by the female character. And then such a plot looks much more interesting. This is kind of what happens in this story, but it's more complicated than that. And it is entertaining and fun to read. It's worth noting that the author is also a songwriter. Maybe this is his secret and he was writing the story the same way as other people write music? Maybe that's why the story is easy to read: we hear rhythm and music through the words.

"Jack and Dora do LA" is a romantic fantastical romp through Los Angeles. Its a sexy story that made me smile and it made me laugh. However, be aware that this book contains some graphic sex scenes including one rather sadistic scene which I found a bit disturbing. A quick read, I would recommend it if you are in the mood for a romantic comedy.

An explicit, but engaging tale,
This review is from: Jack & Dora Do L.A. (Paperback)
I knew before starting this book that would be some scenes that are sexually explicit, and whilst it isn't a genre that I usually read, I really enjoyed it.What surprised me most about this novel was the excellent characterisation of the two main protagonists, Jack and Dora. The author manages to paint them as genuine people living a rather extreme lifestyle. The tale of their relationship underpins the whole novel, and it is a genuine love story. Jack is struggling to come to terms with Dora's more unconventional view of life and relationships, but Dora feels that if their love is to be preserved, they have to have a degree of freedom that most couples would find difficult to deal with. Throw in a few strong characters such as a thwarted former girlfriend and a very scary organiser of wild parties, and you are left with a very entertaining read. I didn't find the sex scenes offensive (although I admit to being rather relieved when Dora states that she doesn't "do animals"), and they were well written. I did nearly stop reading at the point when Jack's flatmate was introduced - and you will know what I mean if you read the book. It's a shame that we didn't see more of Justine - the wild party organiser - because she is a fascinating character, but maybe she will appear in a future book. This is definitely an 18+, but it is an engaging and well written story. I was given a copy of this book to review. |
