Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

You've seen him on Good Morning America and The David Letterman Show with his iguanas and lemurs and all sorts of delightful, unpredictable animals. Now, here is his guide to house pets, and the title describes this book explicitly--the ultimate guide to choosing and caring for pets.

From Library Journal

To help readers choose the right pet, Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and an animal expert who often appears on Good Morning America, discusses a wide variety of pets, from the common (dogs and cats) to the unusual (lizards, potbellied pigs, and cockroaches). He details the characteristics and care requirements of each animal, covering housing, feeding, the appearance of normal and sick animals, and compatibility with children and other pets. For each pet, Hanna presents sources of additional information, including the names, addresses, and phone numbers of relevant organizations. He also discusses specific diseases and offers advice on traveling with or shipping an animal. Especially helpful are his tips on how to cope with the loss of a pet. Easy for both children and adults to read, this book includes the occasional retelling of animal myths and the author's humorous animal experiences, lightening what is an excellent presentation of a serious subject. For all pet-care collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a great resource for anyone wild about animals!, March 1, 1998
By A Customer
This is one of the best books I've ever read! It contains great information on all kinds of pets. Unlike some books, it explains why wild animals do NOT make good pets. I like how the author helps you select a pet by providing pros and cons for each animal. Jack Hanna illustrates a guide to proper pet ownership with humor and warmth. Reading this book was definitely an enjoyable experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN READ for pleasure or research!, November 17, 2009

This review is from: Jack Hanna's Ultimate Guide to Pets (Hardcover)
I originally checked this out from the library but after reading it from cover to cover found I enjoyed his style, the ease of looking up any potential pet, and just plain learning something about other animals. I have had many pets in my life including snakes so I enjoyed this section as well and learned a lot. Jack sometimes includes his personal experiences with animals which personalizes the book. I ordered my copy from Amazon knowing I would like it as a reference book on my bookshelves. Fun to read!
