Format: Audio CD
While difficult to view an artist's work in retrospect without using his subsequent work to compare, I have tried to accurately recall my initail impressions of "Jack Ingram", the album. I first met and heard Jack some Tuesday night too long ago at Adair's in Dallas TX. With the help of his acoustic guitar, a microphone, and a steel chair (in case he fell too far under the influence), he played his interpretations of himself specifically, and Texas music in general. "Jack Ingram", the album, is an extremely accurate example of this interpretation. It delivers a decidedly folk sound with a strong Texas twang. This album drips with the sincerity and experimentaion reserved only for independently released first albums. Expectedly, the eerie romanticism of a fretless bass and the intentional use of an out of tune piano have been excluded on follow-up albums. If you have to choose a Jack Ingram album (all are highly recommended), this self-titled CD is the root of all that has followed. "Jack Ingram" is a folkie, cheaply made masterpiece denotative of Texas music at its unadulterated creative pinnacle.

For anyone into Texas influenced music (Jerry Jeff, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle) should look into any of Jack Ingram's albums. He has a pure, natural sound that both reminicent of those listed and all his own. And if you get a chance to see a live show, you will not be disappointed.

i go to camp longhorn (4th term), and each summer jack ingram plays a couple of songs for us at campfire. i think he is really good. usually i don't like country (i'm more into bon jovi and eve 6) but this guy is an exception. he has talent that surpasses that of any performer i have ever seen before. i recommend this because it's excellent. By and large, I am not a country fan - generally I like Emmy Lou Harris, the Dixie Chicks (new and old), Patsy Cline AND Jack Ingram. This CD is the roots of a someone who appears to be making it big. Mama Tried is a great interpretation and I really like Merle Haggard's original and the Grateful Dead' version, so he had to do it well. The Road Goes on Forever is a masterpiece. Jack Ingram and this CD is country, folk, Texas and just plain enjoyable to listen too.

If you have never taken the time to listen to a Jack Ingram song, you have been missing out on some great music. Not only is it music, but it's a story, as well. I wasn't into his music until I listened to Robert Earl Keen, and I then found out about Jack Ingram. This CD is his best, with nothing but great songs that'll make you smile and just want to chill. If you plan on going on a long road trip, this baby is a must have for the old radio!

Jack Ingram's music makes me happy. This one in particular. While other records of his are countrier, louder, even funnier, this is one I return to often. It's consistently good, start to finish, and he can't help but quietly show off his good taste, such as when he covers Willie Nelson's "Pick Up the Tempo" or Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried." One of my favorite records, and as usual for Jack Ingram, it's prime driving music.
