PreS-Gr 1--The engaging illustrations in these sturdy board books vividly depict racially diverse charac-terizations of perennial nursery favorites. Cousins adeptly captures all of the action contained in the few well-chosen words in each rhyme. The bright colors and childlike simplicity of the pictures are perfect for preschoolers. Other children may be drawn to the books because of fond memories or because they like to pretend to read them. Physically disabled children of any age with educational levels ranging up to the lower elementary grades would be well served by these titles; the board-book format provides pages with strong structural integrity making it easier for them to turn the pages themselves. Every child should have the opportunity to enjoy the rhythm and rhyme of these classic tales.

Lucy Cousins is the creator of many wonderful picture books for children, including Yummy: My Favourite Nursery Stories and Hooray for Fish! , as well as her bestselling books about Maisy the mouse. About I'm the Best, she says, "I had the idea for this book after winning a tennis competition. I loved telling all my friends and family about it, but then I realized that I was probably showing off, like Dog!" My toddler adores this book. The colors are bright, the pictures are large, the rhymes are traditional, and mostly familiar ("Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Jack and Jill"). As I'm reading,I do alter such harsh though realistic nursery rhymes as "There was an old woman." Instead of saying that she scolds her children and sends them to bed, I'm compelled to say that she kisses them kindly. The artwork, I think, is better than that in the Rosemary Wells collection of nursery rhymes.
