First off, let me admit to the fact that I've never owned any kind of juicer before, this one is the first.

We were given the Jack LaLanne Stainless Juicer as a gift from someone who already had one and loved it. I had modestly high hopes for it, not being a big powered-kitchen-gadget fan; but we also have been trying to improve our diets due and lose some weight, so the gift was rather timely to meet that end. I honestly knew nothing about this product until I pulled it out of the box at home. We'd gone to the local big-box store and bought a bunch of stuff to put in the machine and try it out: Kiwis, mangoes, carrots, tomatoes, apples, oranges, pears, ginger root, celery and pineapple.

The Good:

Out of the box I got the impression that this was a sturdy product. All of the parts are fairly simple, that means less stuff to break or clean to me. It assembled in a snap, I didn't even look at the directions (typical guy...I know). Upon firing up the machine, I was impressed with how quiet it was. A modest hum and vibration was all that I could hear. Fruit being put in the device emits a sound reminiscent of a very quiet band or table saw. By the time I've written this, all of the above products have passed through the juicer and released some juice without trouble, the "hard" bits were cut off or out (stems, mango pits, etc...) and the juicer had no difficulty turning any of them into pulp. Incidentally, one of my favorite things to put in the juicer so far is simply a couple of carrots and apples. Tastes good, but probably gives me an orange tongue... There is also a stopper on the drain spout that allows you to stop the flow of juice while you trade out whatever it is you are using to catch the juice.

Cleanup was no problem.

Is it hard to eat your vegetables and have enough fruit servings in a day? It was for me; so I decided to buy another juicer. My last juicer had a very small spout and you had to cut up everything before you put it into the juicer; and it was extremely noisy. I got rid of it because it did not measure up.

I purchased the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer and have been very pleased with it. I read the other reviews and I will try to respond to them as well based upon my own experiences. First, for me the juicer is excellent. I juice fruits and most vegetables. You have to insert soft vegetables followed by hard vegetables for it to work optimally. I have had no problems following the directions which indicate that this works best.

I have made some wonderful drinks with the Power Juicer. Here is one called the Energy Boost Drink which I love:

1 Carrot
1 Celery Stalk
1 Beet Root
Parsley
Lettuce
Watercress
Spinach
3 Tomatoes
Salt To Taste

It is terrific and the machine does an exceptional job with very little pulp at all.

I don't think the machine does as well with grasses. Especially if you are not following them up with a hard vegetable or fruit upon insertion.

I have juiced for years using my Mom's Champion Juicer. So when I tried this juicer I was pleased with how well it extracted juice at a reasonable purchase cost. I think it does a nice job with both leafy and hard vegetables and fruit.

However, it has a fatal flaw. The basket edge is plastic and spins very close above the edge of the frame of the juice collector. If the basket wobbles for any reason these plastic parts rub together. Since the basket is rotating very fast, it only takes a moment for it to rub. Once it does, the plastic quickly heats up and melts. If you make a very clear juice, you can find little bits of plastic in the juice. Decidedly unhealthy.

So I bought a second juicer and was VERY careful about feed rate. However, even the weight of a carrot can sometimes cause the basket to wobble and cause the same problem. In fact, the instruction book states that sometimes the basket can lose alignment. The directions say to let the machine run and it will correct the problem. However, while it is running, it is putting bits of plastic into your juice. I will post a photo if I can figure out how to do that.

I am disappointed. It worked so well extracting juice, but this problem is just unworkable. I would suggest a better made juicer. I think I will get the Champion. Much more expensive but it is also bulletproof. My family has had the same juicer since the late 1980s and it is still going strong. I think the Breville has an all stainless basket and it looks like is does not contact the sides of the juicer, so that might be an option since it is the same design.
